RE: Distributing languishing letter awards...
John Simonton Jr's son Nathan, wearing his father's letter jacket.

Sadly, John died in a car wreck in 2014.
It took some time to discover this, but I eventually found this obituary.
Then I searched for his survivors.
His mother has a Facebook presence, but then I found out it's a legacy account (she had passed away).
Digging through the names of the offspring eventually took me to Nathan, and he responded to a FB Messenger message (when you're not FB "friends", messages like this do not show up in the regular feed or notifications).
Nathan said he'd like to have it - they don't have much of anything of John's.
The jacket was delivered back in April, but Nathan was deployed at the time.
He finally got home (a new home, as it turns out), and unpacked the jacket and sent me this image...

Ditto!!!

Above & beyond ... which is, delightfully, SOP for Grungy.

Congrats & thanks for all you're doing to rehome Rice's languished honors!!

State of the jackets and sweaters project...

Green border is delivered.
Red border is still either a mystery (Abraham) or no contact info (Lee).

Edit: added Jeff and Dr. Kate (Nederveld) Makohon.
Kate was one of the hardest to find - only "R.K.N." in her jacket.
First I found her name in Julie Griswold's records.
Then I found her married name.
Delivered jackets a couple months apart to the same address.

Picture of the recipient or their jacket as they sent them to me.
The rest are either shy, haven't found the time, or don't want their image on social media (a different version of shy).
One more email to them to see if they'll send a selfie, using this montage to show how I'd like to employ the image.
(That email is what got the Makohons to reply).
All of them have now gotten a copy of the email.
We'll see if any others reply.

The image linked here (WordPress) is small compared to the original, which can still be edited. Original is 3.4GB.

The other awards are a project for another day.

Coup!
Jeff's jacket had a typo in the name.
Dr. Kate's was a three-letter-initial.
Discovering that they now had the same last name (Makohon) was a "you have got to be kidding me" moment.
They answered almost immediately to today's follow-up letter.

Note the complementary "R" logos.

RE: Distributing languishing letter awards...
Angela sent this photo back in February, and I completely missed the attachment in the email.
This one was hand-delivered, as she lives just a few minutes away.

Angela Ravin-Anderson, women's track and field manager, 1988 Wrote:By the way, I just want you to know how much I appreciate you for taking the time to do this project. It really meant a lot to me to finally receive my sweater.

Thanks, Grungy!

I was also in the band. I played the flute. There once was a picture of me in the name room. I wish I could get my hands on it.
The band was in the stands, and per usual, I was yelling! Lol!

Geoff Evans, basketball manager, sends this picture of his jock jacket, hanging from one of the redwoods in his front yard.

Grungy, I hope to live long enough to meet you and thank you personally for all you have done for Rice and to keep the alumni in the fold. You have done more than many Administrations and AD's.

Thank you!

Added the latest pictures sent in...

I've learned quite a bit about Tommy Lee from public records - his middle name, his wife's name, his daughter's name, where he's lived, old land line phone numbers.
What I can't find is a way to contact him now...

RE: Distributing languishing letter awards...
Surrendered to the misspelled name in the last jock jacket, and mailed it to Sydney Abram (Taylor).

With the help of someone in the Owl letter winner group on Facebook Tommy Lee was discovered, in the Mission Pioneer High School athletic department, where he is the assistant athletic director.
We spoke on the phone, and he is definitely the “T. LEE” embroidered in the pocket.
Delivered last week.
Hoping he will follow through with a photo (he said he would).

All of the jackets and sweaters delivered
13 of 15 football letter winner plaques delivered. (1 declined, 1 in prison).
11 of 15 academic awards delivered (4 declined).
All but one miscellaneous award delivered - it has a typo, and we’re getting it remade. Delivery is local.
That’s it for the initial south end of the stadium concourse finds.
R-Room finds, and 3 all-conference basketball awards to go.
The eight 18x18x28 boxes of trophies found homes.
Rob Ladd got his golf trophy.
Getting there…
