Distributing languishing letter awards... - Grungy - 10-06-2022 08:18 AM

I'm fixing a hole where the rains gets in

That's what started this - water dripping into The MOB's spaces in what was once the visiting team dressing room on the south end of HRS.

While locating the places upstairs on the concourse level (behind and below the R-Room) that were dripping downstairs I discovered a stockpile of undistributed letterwinner awards.

I'd like to see those awards find the people who should have received them.

Starting with the garments - here is a list of the names .
There are also things like plaques and framed photos, but those are a task for another day.

If you are one of those names, let me know.
If you know how to contact any of these people, let me know.
If you are affiliated with the R-Association, and you'd like to take on this task, please let me know.

Here's an image of the windbreakers and sweaters.
The jock jackets aren't embroidered, and they were too hard to refold, and there was a hand-written list of the recipients, so there are no pictures of those.

Brian Tagtmeier recently received his jock jacket (team manager, tennis), with the assistance of Melissa Kean.

All but the sweaters (they’re in the box).

Could some of these be misprints, with the logo messed up, and that’s why these weren’t distributed?

I'd KILL to still have my letter jacket. Lost in hurricane damage. Same with my sheepskin.

Does the R-Association (and Rice itself) have any means of replacing these?
You can buy a replacement ring...

One can easily order a replacement diploma -- it just won't be on sheepskin.

One could, less easily, procure a sheep.

Then tattoo the diploma on the live stock.

How cool would that be?

Not so much for the sheep.

Reminds me of Churchill’s assessment regarding the traditional English breakfast of ham and eggs: “The hen is involved but the pig is committed.”

10 jackets and 1 sweater mailed today.
Bagwell, Courtney, Epp, Gillingham, Goins, Heins, Krusleski, Rodriguez, Toves, Wallace, Young.

Greg Marshall found some contact info for me, and emails were sent.
Only one bounce message, which is extraordinary.

Got another email response this evening.
One email was an out-of-office auto-reply for R. Roche, who is in Australia.

Two jackets are awaiting pickup in person.

I've got some phone numbers from Greg, but cold-calling makes me squirm.

If we have any letter-winners reading this, from the early '80s to about the turn of the century, can you take a look at the list and PM contact info to me for any that you know how to reach?

In order to maintain privacy, the way the permissions works on the Google Sheets list is for me to share it with you via email. I can't just send a link without making the whole thing public, which I'd rather not do. If you'd like to help, PM your email address to me.

In related news, I found a box with over 100 "R" cards, and empty Athletic Department emblazoned envelopes to mail them.
Were they mailed?
No.
There were only two names that I recognized - Brent Scott and Kenneth Austin.
I've been in touch with Kenneth, and he says he never received his, so I'm going to assume that these aren't replaced or dupes - they were just never sent.
Sigh...
I'll drop Kenneth's in the mail tomorrow.
Going to need a lot of help to get contact info for the others.
I'll start typing up the list of names tonight.

Also in the pipeline - there are 15 of these, mostly in the 2013-2014 year.
Greg Marshall has found email addresses for all but Erik Maher and Laurie McNamara. No listing at all for those two.

No email, but a phone number for Anthony Urbanelli.
(I don't like cold-calling, but I will if I have to.)

Only a mailing address for Kylie Cullinan.
I'd much rather have confirmation that the contact info is good before mailing one of these out.

Any of their classmates on here who might know how to get email for the people listed above?

Found in a box along with no-longer-fresh Athletic Department envelopes (humidity has sealed them all).
132 R Cards
Kenny Austin's card is in the mail (he confirmed that he never received one).

I have a spreadsheet with the alphabetized names.

Some past R Association being was making an effort, and added the Post-It to Curtis Lee Stevens' card, but then the box was forgotten.
This card is signed by Bo Hagan.

There is a Curtis Lee Stevens Jr in the 1940 census.
Perhaps a descendant would still like to have it.
Otherwise it goes to the Woodson.
