BSKB is right, the Big 10+ and the SEC will probably get 4-5 of the at-larges bids. The SEC routinely gets 2 now. That's the reason they like this setup too, they are going to make a ton of money off of it. SB, MWC, and the AAC are going to fight for the one auto and it will be rare someone picks off an at-large from that group. Not saying it's right, but it's probably reality.

It is reality. But ESPN analysis showed there was one year of the past 8 that 2 G5 teams would have made a 12 team field. Granted, both Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina were undefeated 2 years ago in the abbreviated season.
It is a safe assumption to think that JMU will need to do 2 things to qualify
1- win the Sun Belt championship game
2- schedule tough in the OOC so their strength of schedule and resume is better than any other G5 conference champion.
The selection committee has shown over the years that weak schedules are a huge barrier to selection.

You are mistaken. I love being in the SunBelt. It is the very best thing that could have ever happened to us.

The P5 will almost always get all of the at-large spots. This isn't about the at-large spots for us.

RE: CFP Expansion
Good news. Cig can set his eyes on a definitive goal now in 2024. JMU still won’t have a full roster of FBS recruits by then, but should be significantly stronger than the transition year.

How have you come to the conclusion that JMU won’t be at the full FBS scholarship level at the start of the 2024 season? JMU was at 77 ships this past season, and with the portal and two recruiting seasons between now and ‘24 it would be almost impossible not to have 85 scholarship players on the roster.

I believe he is saying there will still be players that were recruited at the FCS level

Yes but Hart seems to be forgetting that while some of these players were recruited and signed to JMU while we were still FCS, they elected to attend JMU over a litany of other FBS programs, such as ODU, Army, Navy, Temple, etc.
In any case, this team has proven itself to be FBS caliber, so even players that may not have had FBS offers have performed at the FBS level and done so admirably, exceeding the expectations of many a Purple Kool Aid drinker.

Ok, fair enough.
However, I’d counter that any player on the current roster, whether recruited as an FCS or FBS player from High School, or accepted as a transfer from a FCS program via the portal, are FBS caliber players. Certainly, the 2022 success of JMU has proven the roster is FBS ready, and there will be 85 (or close to it) FBS players on the roster at the start of the 2024 season.
In Cignetti I trust.

I'd put the likelihood at 95% or greater that JMU, Liberty, or ODU reach the CFP before VT or UVA. Both programs are terrible and the ACC loses it's luster by the year.

I don't get why they always act like JMU is an out of town team (casting a wide net) when we're 2:30 hours closer to DC than VT and have just as many alumni in the area. Hell Morgantown is more local to DC than Blacksburg.

Yes, that is what I was trying to say. Full depth through all 85 scholarship spots will take at least a few more years, maybe more if Cig goes heavy on high school recruits that may need to redshirt before being physically ready for FBS big boy football. The total talent level should only increase over the next several years and that is an exciting proposition considering how well JMU did in its transition year with a roster disadvantage vs opponents.

RE: CFP Expansion
One aspect of the expanded CFP. SEC/BIG teams might add G5 teams in out years - expecting their advantages will make those future games more like lock wins. If were willing to go on the road, we can lock in some name schools expecting a win.
Running the table in the SB East or West is going to be a big challenge. Still, it is better to have 4 or 5 teams from each side in the hunt year over year. A Sun Belt team might not get to the CFP right away, but getting teams ranked known nationally and pulling in wins against P5 schools is the recipe for making noise in the CFP.
A perfect season from the weakest conference with a marquee win, and FCS win, and a random OOC win might be good enough - but I would bet polling behaviors change once the rules and impacts are factored in. Suddenly, 3 - 5 SEC teams will be ranked higher than 8 - 0 G5 teams. Ultimately the profile plus the wins will make the difference. I am looking at how Gonzaga has moved into a top BBall program year over year and it has really taken having 2 or 3 other very strong teams to support this.

Push too hard, and it would be 4+8.
It is what it is. We have a poor hand to bluff with.
