I cannot believe it. How did we lose to that team at home two weeks ago?

73-61 Rice, final. Pretty good day for Rice basketball. Wasn't perfect. We really need to up the tempo tomorrow against UNT (and make more than 4 3s). But pretty solid defensively (clearly we need to play the entire season in a football stadium because we looked decent in the tournament last year also). This was Fiedler at his best. Hopefully Evee gets a little confidence from the FTs. Fundamentally solid game from Mullins. Attacked well, defended well.

Mullins had a couple of sweet steals, in which he put up his hands just as the 49er he was guarding committed to a pass ... and caught the ball himself.

Game against UNT is at 5:30 CST. On Stadium, unfortunately.

Did we win any games last year at the tournament?

We won two-but we also started a round further back.

So we matched last year’s performance by winning tonight.

And a couple of really strong baskets using inside muscle. Good to see him playing well at the end here.

Presumably much less energy from us two weeks ago? I didn't see that game, but I have seen us look pretty sluggish at times. However, tonight I thought we looked much more energetic and alert, and our defense was more intense.

I was watching him alot too -- it certainly appears that teams have keyed in on removing him from the offense, and have succeeded every game of late. We're subsequently a 4 man offense on every possession. There were a few times when we had quick ball movement around the perimeter, leaving an open shot for Pierre or Abercrombie. They took good shots, but one more pass would've given Evee a good look too. We need to work specifically on getting him GOOD looks, even if constant man pressure on him. It'd be a rare player who could go weeks without a good look to suddenly be expected to be hot again.

I had heard if we got to 16 wins, we were going to accept a CBI bid (if offered), but that might have been a regular season total? Regardless, 16 wins is a new high for Pera after back to back 15 win seasons.

So we're exactly .500 over the last three seasons.

He'll have to to do better with a new president coming in, and presumably a new athletics director being hired soon thereafter. I don't think Karlgaard survives any of this for much longer.

RE: CUSA MBB Conference Tournament
This was a great win for the team and program. It marked a positive turnaround for a team that really struggled without Quincy over the past 5 or so games. After some really sub par performances, Poteat was again a solid contributor for his minutes, and despite his continued shooting slump, Travis Evee made the free throws he needed to at the end to secure the Owls victory.

Carl Pierre has really made a huge difference for this team. He is probably the best transfer into the program since Egor Koulechov. It looks like Terrance McBride has finally developed his niche on the team as well, not taking shots beyond the arc and maximizing his talents. Eliminate his 2-15 3-point attempts he is shooting 50% for the year, pretty efficient for a guard.

I have no illusions that Rice will win Thursday against North Texas but I am hoping for a competitive game, unlike the first two against the Mean Green. They lost the first game by 32 points and the second game by 23. If this game is within single digits at the 4 minute mark of the second half I would be thrilled, regardless of the final outcome. The Owls have to figure out how to score against UNT, as they scored only 43 and 44 points respectively in the first two games, their two worst offensive performances of the year.

Joe does have some really valuable skills... but football just doesn't seem to be among them... or a strength of his. He really needs to hire a STRONG football person.

??? Isn't that what the head coach is supposed to be?

Geez, Walt. Who hires the head coach?

Maybe I could have said it better.

Joe has some clear skills... mostly administrative where he is an excellent operator. At a P5 school with multiple high powered ADs or at a school where football or even basketball (being nationally competitive) isn't that important... he is perfect. At a school where he is 'the guy' and football and/or basketball being nationally competitive is important, he has not demonstrated a whole lot of specific expertise. If we aren't going to replace him because of how well he does in these other areas, then we need to recognize his inability to overcome this significant and important hurdle... and augment his staff with an 'expert' in this area. Someone who has demonstrated skill at hiring football and/or basketball coaches, engaging alumni and casual fans in football and putting a quality product on the field... especially if that person is either close to retirement like a long-time Tx high school coach who might want to augment his Teacher's Retirement with a 'private' retirement package, or an AD somewhere else who still has the fire for football, but doesn't want the administrative headaches of 'everything else'. Maybe a coach looking to rehabilitate himself or a young 'football' guy looking to make a name in administration without having to start off as a guy working the 'minor' programs.

Let THAT person (essentially) hire the coach... set the tone... etc etc for football... and let Joe supervise that person and continue to do what he does 'well'.

Rick Mello is on point for all the Men's sports just as Stacy is for all the women's sports. He's responsible for scheduling and the like.
