Tara Simpson-Sullivan did not make finals, but finished 14th, 2 spots ahead of her seed placement.

But, she's yet another All-American for the Women's Track and Field team!

Josie clears the opening bar (5 ' 8") on her first attempt. Bar goes to 5' 10".

Note: although I'm comfortable with metric, I'll try keeping it on feet/inches.

Josie is out at 6' 0". She will finish in a tie for 8th. I think, even with the tie, she makes 1st team All-American!

One point I have made repeatedly to those who want Rice to adopt an Ivy League approach to athletics is that truly to do so would require substantially MORE support for non-revenue and club sports.

Tie for 8th gets you first team All-American?

I know that the top 8 get 1st team. I'm just surmising that a tie would mean the same.

Rice women are tied for 35th with 0.2 points.

I was at the New Balance Nationals today (high school meet). Lots of runners from the Houston area. None of the ones I googled appeared to be committed to Rice. Disappointing.

Yeah... I never really understood this.... and not just for T&F but a few other sports. Not having anything to do with the accomplishments of these athletes... but more like if you attend a high school football game and they announce the cheer teams. It seems like half of every squad is an 'all-american'... which seems to turn on whether or not they can do a standing back tuck vs a handspring. Fast is fast, so these people are clearly deserving.

The only reason this bothers me is that competing in g5 for football or not in a strong basketball league... it is exceptionally hard to be named an All-American in those sports. I suspect but do not know that it is the same in Volleyball and Soccer... unless those teams are EXTREMELY good... being named an All-American is EXCEPTIONALLY difficult. This can give the impression that some of our team sports athletes aren't as 'special' as our individual sports athletes... especially when looking at things like our Hall of Fame.... while at the same time, it allows us to recruit those special individuals more easily than it would if you needed to be in some version of p5 to be considered 'fast'. Top 8 (or whatever) in every event is a little tougher to swallow... in that this is only 'first team'... so including honorable mentions, you could have two dozen 'All-Americans' in every event. In team sports, you generally only have 1 or perhaps two at any position.
