RE: Losing the city.
I forgot about the Tigers playing UCF the other day. Right now, the Grizzlies are getting the light. If you watched ESPN this week, Ja and the Grizzlies were talked about a lot.

However, credit to the Grizzlies. The defense has improved. The offense is a physical offense that has flow and they can shoot the 3, yet pound the paint. They also have a coach and a culture.

Tigers defense has taken a step back. Offense doesn't have enough flow due to high turnovers and inability to shoot the three.

The Tigers are averaging 17.9 turnovers a game in 40 minutes. The Grizzlies are averaging 12.7 turnovers in 48 minutes.

If there's an option between a Saturday matinee featuring Tiger basketball or a Saturday night game featuring the Grizzlies, I'll go with the Grizzlies.

The grizz haven’t passed the Tigers at all. Maybe for you but not for the masses. Not at all.

You’re wrong. Grit and grind era Grizzlies passed them up and the gap is only going to get bigger with Ja Morant. There’s a lot of Grizzlies fans that weren’t even alive the last time the tigers made the tournament

Keep dreaming.
Not. Even. Close.

There are a lot of Griz fans who weren’t born when the Tigers were last in the tournament. You’re right. But they don’t have any money.

The Griz are great and great for the city but the fan base for the Tigers is much larger and has more expendable income.

The NBA has alienated a massive part of their audience with non-basketball stuff and marketing efforts. They’re marketing themselves to a target audience who really doesn’t have the expendable income. And a much smaller segment of the population.

Yep. City fricked the Univ. Just like in football.

Maybe this will help the Univ figure out the City is not their friend.

RE: Losing the city.
The total melodrama with this program is what I don't understand and am sick of. They look like they have everything needed to be successful, except a decent point guard. Totally the coaches fault. Which was super stupid. the aau ball is miserable. The players don't seem to learn or care. We don't need the headlines, we want a well coached team, that learns and improves. I guess that is asking to much! And they have lost some of us. No doubt. Every year it some kind of craziness. Be angry but it is true.

It's not even close.

Related to competing with the Grizz, the Tigers would be well served to build an OC arena & play there. That would likely more clearly define the fan base & fan- game experience.

The average basketball fan, with no ties to the school, is now more excited about the Griz than they are the Tigers.

The team has to do something to get the energy and excitement back or they could be relegated to the number two spot in town for basketball.

05-nono

Both can share top billing but to stay in the hearts of the casual fan you must win. Grizz are winning big right now and the Tigers are not. Grizz have a superstar and the Tigers don’t. That can be flipped in a year.

What it is not is Grizz vs the Tigers. It is Grizz vs Grizz and Tigers vs Tigers. Win and either or both teams are fine and have full arenas.

All of this.
Go Tigers, & Go Grizz!

Agreed! While both play the same game, the product is totally different.

No reason NOT to support any sport that provides entertainment for folks living in and around the 901.

It’s hard for the university to compete. College stars are 1 & done… by the time a fan gets to know them, they’re gone… so that turns the focus on the coach. The NBA is different. Ja Morant might be in this market for 10+ years & the people of this city identify with him.
I’m not really sure what the answer is… I hope it’s a hometown legend leading the Tigers to national prominence… but I know the Grizz are taking a chunk of interest from young people who used to be locked in only to Tiger basketball. My children don’t really know a player on the Tigers team, but they sure as hell know who Ja is.

Not this again

If topics like fan base loyalty are being discussed, this would surely be a contributing factor for the Tigers to develop a more loyal fanbase & grow them from the local student body - like it or not there are advantages to OC facilities. And greatly reduce any competition with the Grizz.

Yeah but if too many young professionals start following the tigers where will our blue hairs sit?
