If I had to guess, the more availability of alcohol actually has an inverse effect on drunk in public arrests. This same debate was happening prior to actually allowing alcohol at college football games and freakonomics even did an episode on it

Freedom. God bless America.

Maybe I just haven't noticed in recent years, but I feel like I see far fewer extremely intoxicated people since they starting selling beer in the stadium.

Aren't the kids drinking less these days? From what I've heard the JMU party reputation/scene has diminished quite a bit since in the last decade.

Ha...certainly that is part of it.

I also think people aren't draining those couple of extra beers/drinks in the final 30 minutes before heading in.

The problem is there are only, what, 3? places to buy booze. JMU fans like to drink. You fix that bottleneck by offering more sales stands or doing it with concessions. JMU probably isn't interested in that from the standpoint that it reduces risk by limiting consumption.

It also limits time we can actually watch the game, which is why we are there. If JMU is trying to tell us that we can't be trusted with a beer, then ban it. But, if you are going to serve it, make it readily available, not a 40-minute wait in line to purchase.

Literally every other stadium that I’ve been to that sells beer does it this way and if there’s a reason for that. Whether or not they can’t do that due to some ABC law as others have speculated I don’t know. But if this is just a Jmu rule and not a state law then just do away with it

This, the long , single file cue lines are a big part of the problem. see the UVA basketball game -same issue. Sell the the darn beer at the concession stands, that's why we have to get the wrist bands, right - to eliminate the need for the cashiers to check ID!!. multiple single file lines in front of concession stands will solve this problem. JMU needs to fix this asap, at basketball and football for next year. its simple, get it done.

I went to Louisville for grad school and went to a bunch of basketball and football games. They sell beer just how you'd expect at an entertainment venue. They sell it in all concession stands who check ID when you order. They also have individual beer stands scattered throughout the concourses. You never have to wait more than 5-10 min to get a beer. If JMU really refuses to sell beer in concession stands then they really need to at least set up tons of beer stands throughout all concourses. The issue is having like 1000 people in a single file line for a beer. Tons of beer stands throughout the concourses will allow them to serve their section and cut down on lines

This could be due to people knowing they dont have to get extremely drunk before the game due to no alcohol being allowed inside. Now that beer is sold people can more casually drink throughout the day and game vs having to get all their drinking in before the game

Yeah fixing this will result in more fans in seats longer since they dont spend a quarter in line. This will lead to more cheering/home field advantage. It will also lead to more satisfied fans who are happy with how things are done. Not fixing it will cause more and more people to sneak alcohol in. The beer in the stadium isnt overpriced but if it takes 30-45 min just to get a beer, people will start bringing their own stuff in to avoid that ridiculous line
