Cole Johnson to the bigs?
Some may believe that Cole doesn't have what it takes to play in the NFL. I beg to differ. Cole is EXACTLY what the NFL is looking for! His profile could not be better for the NFL. From his physical attributes to his stats, he is very similar to Joe Flacco. I have made this comparison before on this board.

Like Flacco, Cole is tall, lanky, and has poor posture. He also has a very strong arm, is tall enough to see over defenses, can hit a speeding receiver 50 yards away in stride, and takes very good care of the ball. His TD to INT ratio is extremely good. And, as a bonus, Cole is much more mobile than Flacco. As stated, "Cole is EXACTLY what the NFL is looking for!"

The one knock on Cole is his short span as the starting quarterback. Covid goofed things up early. Lucky for Cole he got this extra season and he is making the most of it.

If I am a pro scout, I am watching Cole very closely. He has the tools to be a starter in the right situation, just like his predecessor. I am actually amazed he is not getting more attention, and I'm not the only one....

"Most underrated player: Cole Johnson Quarterback James Madison: His 17 TD’s to 1 interception is impressive. Cole has smooth touch. Cole is well accomplished but still isn’t getting the recognition in big time media. He is careful with the ball and a solid to good anticipation skills. But has a good enough arm to throw to the outside."

Aside from the article's poor grammar, I believe it is spot on. Cole is "underrated."

Totally disagree. Nice FCS story but that is about it.

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
With this year’s QB class, I could definitely see him getting a tryout and making it as a UDFA. DiNucci in round 7 was a huge surprise for me as I expected him to get a UDFA shot as well.

As much respect as I have for Nooch's skills at quarterback, I believe that Cole offers even more from an NFL front office perspective. Cole is the prototypical NFL QB.

We will see how it works out. It is all about breaks and circumstances. But, don't take my word for it, ask Mr. Heineken.

I love your optimism. Not sure Cole has quite the arm to be a top QB1 at the NFL level.
And to be fair I think that is DiNucci's problem as well + the speed of the game seems too fast for him at this point in his career + (most importantly) Dallas sucks a big fat wet one when anyone not named Dak gets a playbook...("let's run 15 trick plays and misdirection plays that take 5 seconds to develop with a makeshift OL! Yeah that's the ticket!")

Joe Flacco had 25 pounds on cole coming out of college. Right now Cole would get broken in have in the NFL. Dinucci said it himself that you dont see guys like Chase young at the FCS level.

Again for the million time, the prototypical nfl quaterback has changed even since flacco was in the league. Cole does not have the mobility in the pocket to stay alive against NFL d lineman. Good FCS quarterback but unless he's lighting up the stat sheets like the kid from SELA or EWU he's not going to make a team

Cole Johnson to the bigs?
Unpopular take, but if CJ was truly a pro prospect, our kicker wouldn’t be setting field goal records and we would score touchdowns more than 50% of the time in the Redzone. Nice kid, good jmu qb, makes minimal mistakes, but he doesn’t have “it”.

Also can we stop with this “he’s the prototypical NFL qb” stuff. Sure, he was, 20 years ago. The only two statues that are still successful are Brady and Stafford, and both play with absolutely loaded rosters. Look at the successful teams right now, all have mobile quarterbacks.

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
Just not going to happen. He can throw it deep and let Wells run under it, but some of his short to midrange throws end up being a bigger struggle for him. At times he has underthrown the receiver or even leads them right into tight coverage to get lit up, you shouldn’t be still doing that at this level. His 3 straight fades early last week at WM were awful, sometimes he just gets a total brain cramp on short ones and makes awful throws he wishes he had back as soon as he lets it fly, which luckily at times have been dropped by defenders who had easy picks but were probably startled at how easy it was. His weaknesses get compounded when the field shrinks which is one reason why we settle for so many short range FGs. His pocket presence is below average, he locks on his primary target and doesn’t spread the ball around enough, his throwing motion is too slow and deliberate, his ability to escape has been improving but still below average (and I don’t want to hear about his long runs, he gets them because they give them to him, the D picks and chooses which of our weapons to focus on negating, his running is last on the list). He’s a 6th year college DI QB so the perceived flaws will not go away the rest of this season or beyond. Ben has had issues with the speed of the NFL and how quickly he needs to process things and make a play, and Ben’s abilities to do that at JMU dwarf CJs, so no way will he be able to keep up. Funny that in the one ranking they had Cheek, CJ and Jones in a row, if you could take all three and combine their attributes you’d have a hell of an NFL prospect, but as it is all 3 will be working in the real world next fall, and that’s not meant to be a knock, they’ve had great success at this level and 2 of the 3 still have a shot at lifting some hardware in Frisco in a few weeks.

Flacco also had a massive arm. Cole throws a great ball and can push the ball down the field, but I'm not sure his arm is NFL level.

Flacco was listed as 6’6” 230 with CJ 6’5” 215, but it certainly looks like a 25lb. difference. CJ is now in his 6th year of a DI football strength and conditioning program and has the build of a kid still in high school you’re waiting to see grow into his body and fill out. Could you imagine the punishment a Chase Young could put on a guy that isn’t up to speed at that level?

Isnt he a cyber intelligence major as well? Probably looking at a great starting salary right out of school so I'd take that over getting the crap kicked out of me in an NFL training camp any day of the week

Yes, and it took some re-recruiting to get him back for this season or else we’d have lost him like Gillespie who chose not to come back late because apparently they didn’t chase after him enough. CJ we needed desperately, perhaps they thought they’d be ok without Gillespie.

I have said all along the the members of this board have underestimated Cole's talent. Whether or not that translates to an NFL career or not remains to be seen. But, he is one of the best quarterbacks JMU has ever had. He is greatly under appreciated and taken for granted. He will be sorely missed next year.

Fantastic QB for JMU.

0.00000001% chance he can catch on with a NFL team. He just doesn't have the arm strength. You can see it on our screen plays this year. Ball takes a week to get to the perimeter and the play is about dead by then. It's ok to be a damn good FCS QB for JMU.

Curious, where would you rank him against this list of all time QBs? (I'd say between 5-7 unless he gets us another Natty)

1) Rascati
2) Cawley
3) Schor
4) DiNucci
5) Lee
6) Landers
7) Maddux
8) LeZotte
9) Williams
10) Thorpe (ok that was just for laughs, but also kind of an indicator of where the talent level is from here)

Top 6 Qbs are tough to put in any order but I'd probably bump Lee to 4, landers to 5 and dinucci at 6. If Landers didnt get hurt, we win another NC. At best Cole is 7 to me

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
Cole is a great kid who has had a nice career at JMU. I think what Cole is missing has less to do with his physical skills and talents and more to do with his confidence and decision making ability. In my opinion, his lack of confidence slows his decision making down a touch. It’s noticeable at our our level but would be “fatal” at the pro level.

Williams was much better than 9. I would put him before Maddox and LeZotte.

Purely talent based:
1. Lee
2. Cawley
3. Schor
4. Landers
5. Rascati
6. Williams
7. DiNucci
8. Berry
9. Maddux
10. LeZotte

I think this is key - it's a super slow release......he'd be sacked 3x by the time it's out of his hands.

seems to me his confidence and leadership is way up this year - that's great and hoping he takes us to the natty - that will depend mostly on better playcalling i'd say

Johnson would get killed in a NFL mini camp. I fear for his life with fcs linebackers near him

I predicted Steph Curry would not make it in the NBA so my scout skills are not the best admitted
