RE: How do we feel about the WAC now? [no expansion talk]
If I am the WAC, I’m wondering what the hell McNeese is doing as they are leading their local folks to believe that FBS is their goal and it may not be with the WAC

https://www.americanpress.com/2021/11/05...nvitation/

Other than that, the WAC is in decent shape still. I’m bummed SHSU is leaving but when RGV adds football, it will be great for the league and you’ve got a solid core in TX even with Sam out

There is a rumor that CUSA is their goal.

Cross country is growing as well. I understand the stated desire to join a conference for all sports, and the NMSU AD was pretty clear about this, for a long time. So when CUSA asked, NMSU accepted. I do hope some of the WAC teams will still schedule NMSU. I think that UVU or GCU will draw more fans than Jacksonville St or FIU.

NMSU might be reluctant to schedule most WAC teams for the same reason P5s are reluctant to schedule NMSU. The WAC teams are not good enough that an NMSU win would gain brownie points or raise their NET, but good enough that there's a serious danger of NMSU being upset.

Understood that this was the right thing for NMSU and SHSU but it's still very disheartening. I wanted the membership to be stable long enough to develop some rivalries and history, but what little we did have mostly involved NMSU. The Texas Four had plenty among themselves but SHSU leaving messes that up too. The conference is now majority newbies.
With the loss of NMSU, I'd say the WAC is now made up of 100% newbies. None of the remaining schools have been here longer than a decade. Here is a list of when the WAC schools entered the conference:
Seattle in 2013
GCU in 2014
Utah Valley in 2014
UTRGV in 2014
Cal Baptist in 2019
Dixie State in 2020
Tarleton State in 2020
SFA in 2021
ACU in 2021
Lamar in 2021
McNeese State in 2023
Incarnate Word in 2023

Seattle University is now the elder statesman at the ripe old age of 9 years!!

This will be interesting to see how it plays out going forward. It wouldn't shock me if GCU/UVU/CBU/Seattle don't schedule with NMSU going forward.

I wouldn't mind a GCU/NMSU matchup in the Jerry Colangelo Classic.

Given our proximity and familiarity, I wouldn't rule out some games in the future. Historically, GCU has been pretty consistent, and that's a big plus in non conference scheduling. We both might be among the higher NET ranking teams either of us can get scheduled.
I too would love to see GCU & NMSU continue to play each other. Hopefully that will happen. Perhaps GCU could replace UTEP on NMSU's annual schedule now that UTEP will become a conference game.

It's a conference!

Northern Arizona would be a good option if a 10th member is needed.

RE: How do we feel about the WAC now? [no expansion talk]
It sounds like from NMSU's perspective, I would imagine that we see Grand Canyon as a non-conference opponent in most sports.

https://www.lcsun-news.com/story/sports/...338378001/

"Moccia said in a Friday press conference that maintaining NMSU's rivalry with Grand Canyon once the Aggies leave the WAC isn't totally out of the question. NMSU leads the all-time series with GCU 14-5, although the Lopes have won the last three matchups, including their meeting in last year's WAC Tournament championship game.

NMSU's yearly conference meetings with GCU quickly blossomed into a major conference rivalry with iconic moments, including senior Aggie Johnny McCants' half-court buzzer beater in January 2019. The Lopes have routinely sold out GCU arena when NMSU has come to town, and this season won't be any different. GCU arena has already sold out for the 2021-22 men's basketball season.

"It's Phoenix, AZ. It's a very easy drive to get over there," Moccia said. "They usually have great (rating percentage index's) in all of their sports, so I would certainly encourage all of our coaches, and I'm sure they would want to keep a good regional, great RPI, great rivalry series, no matter what it is."

We will see if that happens. I don't see GCU willing to send basketball to LC once NMSU leaves the WAC. Maybe a neutral court idea in PHX and in ABQ. I highly doubt NMSU would be into not hosting a game vs GCU in ABQ.

Related question: Now that the FBS dream is dead, do any of you much care about the results of the UTRGV referendum?

Voting ended yesterday, no results announced yet.

Why do you think GCU wouldn’t agree to an OOC home and home series in the future? It would be beneficial for both programs as both are usually solid teams and it’s probably one of the closest games you could get that fans could easily travel to. Just wondering the logic behind it.

I am definitely interested so would love to hear the results. Since I'd prefer UTRGV stay a men's soccer school, I hope the referendum goes down in flames.

Yes. Another raid by CUSA and the WAC FCS will be left scrambling for enough members for AQ status. Also, FBS is more feasible for UTRGV than for some of the remaining schools.

If you want to be a good program, you play road games against good teams.

The results are in. DZ1 will be upset and you'll be happy, 61% in favor of (American) football.

Yeah, it is a bummer. But say la vie. Hope it works out. Any news on whether or not the university will keep men's soccer? Typically that is the first men's sport to go to accommodate football.

I responded to you in the other thread. I really don't know. Of course the administration was not going to go around saying "voting yes means kill men's soccer".
