Moving up is not about winning a national championship. It's all about the "Benjamins". Prior to the new contract extension, Sun Belt schools were getting $100,000 each annually from the ESPN contract. JMU might have gotten an annual Christmas ham from the CAA TV contract.
The Sun Belt will make a $600,000 contribution to JMU during the transition. Indicates that once the transition is complete JMU could earn $2.5 million from media rights.
"I just think it was foolish of their AD to officially make the announcement before the end of the 21-22 school year. If they just waited until June 2022 then they would have been eligible for post season and the CAA's automatic qualifier. After all, that's what VCU did in 2012..."
Might be true but the Sunbelt wants an answer and it had to go through the state legislature...which is public. And I am not sure the Sunbelt wanted to keep the info on the downlow. The Sunbelt has sponsors it wants to keep or get...they can't very well say, "Well, we know but we can't tell you" to the sponsors....and the fans.....and the other schools and their donors.
This is a part that I'd like to get a firm answer on. Could JMU have said "we're a yes but we need to wait until <x> so that we're not screwing over the <sport> team." without forcing another year-long wait? I don't know -- I have a feeling with parts this big, that's not an option.

I thought that Mettlen had already posted about that.
My understanding was that the Sun Belt needed JMU to commit so they could start working on schedules and the media deal.
It's possible that by signing the paperwork would have been all that was needed for the CAA to instill the ban. It seems ridiculous that the CAA would have been okay with signing the paperwork (which would have absolutely leaked somewhere) as long as we didn't talk about it. The CAA would have discovered it and banned us anyway. Plus it probably wouldn't have been a good PR move to do that behind their back. Plus, it seems like JMU was trying to be transparent with the CAA, which is why they knew about the ban before making anything official.
The idea of the bylaw was to prevent schools from leaving the conference. Obviously by signing paperwork, that would be all that was needed to not be in the conference. Making an "official" announcement isn't what makes that happen.
If they didn't sign the paperwork, then technically JMU could have backed out of the agreement and essentially screwed the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt needed the commitment from JMU to move forward. A verbal agreement just doesn't cut it, especially when millions of dollars are at stake.

All other conferences treat their members that are leaving as full conference members until their last day in the conference. The CAA does not. This says it all.

No way the Sun Belt waits until the end of the school year, especially after we turned them down in 2013. To ask that would have been pretty ballsy on our part. That's not how business works. You keep turning down the promotion, the boss is going to stop offering it to you.

As painful as it is to the current student athletes, it's certainly way worth it in the long run.
Both Basketballs and Softball still have a shot at post season play - it's just a more difficult route.

Yeah, I feel the same way.
It's essentially a job offer. To suggest the applicant can list the terms is not a great first impression.
"Thanks for the job, but my previous job will penalize my family unless I accept the job in 6 months. That's okay, right???"
It's not the applicant's fault. It's not the new employer's responsibility, either. It's the previous employer's fault.

Looks like there's a chance this passes. Guaranteed highest ranked G5 conference champ is in plus all the P5 champs then the 6 other highest ranked teams. It's a longshot but i think its an attainable goal for JMU to one day make the playoffs

I think it's a good idea to not boot the G5. I know it's been discussed a lot over the last few years that the P5 may break off and do their own thing, but I think it could ultimately hurt them more than help. The NCAA basketball tournament is so highly watched because of the desire for casual fans to see an underdog beat a P5. I think including the G5 champ will increase interest and will drive viewership up with casual sports fans. I hope they continue with this proposal, it's the ideal path forward IMO.

I never understood how it is fair to the other conferences to be left out of an autobid to a playoff scenario-regardless if they are good or not.

RE: It's Official...FBS here we come.
That is why the existing 4 team CFP is such a fraud. 98% of the FBS teams have absolutely zero chance of ever getting a sniff at it. It is setup so the same dozen or so teams will the only ones ever considered for it. Did anyone really think that Cincinnati ever had a legitimate chance of getting one of the 4 spots? No way ever the P5 teams will let a G5 team crash their exclusive little end of season party.
The ultimate solution would be to do a playoff like FCS does. A 16 team playoff with each of the 10 FBS conferences getting an autobid and 6 at large. Will never happen since as soon as something like this happens the vast majority of the bowl games become completely irrelevant and would disappear. If that happens all the networks suddenly have to content to broadcast. And I am sure that would not go over well especially at ESPN which outright owns or has major financial interests in about 15 of the bowl games.
Don't know what the ultimate answer is but the existing system is completely messed up.
As you can tell I do not like the existing CFP system at all!!!!!

This, but money talks and logic walks!
They could, of course, make just as much or more money off a playoff. A 16-team playoff is 15 games. You could incorporate the existing bowls into the playoff scheme like the current four-team playoff does. There'd still be about two dozen bowl games left to air.

Exactly right. It will all be driven by the Benjamins. I would think that the higher level bowls would be folded into a playoff but not sure how many of the lower level ones would survive.
Years ago when college football was balking against a playoff I always said as soon as they figure out a way to make more money off of a playoff the opposition to it would disappear. Low and behold it happened!!
Lack of a real playoff in FBS is just a fraud.

Cincinnati not making the playoffs this year if they win out could be the best thing for the G5 especially if they put in a 2 loss Alabama in over them. The public outcry will almost force the committee's hands.
However with as big of a mess as the FBS has been this season, there's a chance that Oregon and OSU lose and they wouldnt have a choice but to put Cinci in. OU needs to drop a game as well because if they go undefeated, theyre definitely in

And I believe our admin did a whip count among conference presidents and felt assured they had the votes to not have our kids denied competing for championships this season. They understood and accepted that next year's championship participation was a goner, but they thought this year was safe. Never trust a CAA prez!

Find the article on WKU in another thread. The CUSA presidents were all together and happy in a meeting and the next day, six of them left. Talk about not knowing who to trust.
"Good meeting! See you tomorrow, Phil."
"Umm...yeah. See you...tomorrow."
