Stand alone G league, Pros and Cons
Could the following conferences be successful as an independent D1 league on the national level in all collegiate sports;

AAC
BIG-12, if texas and oklahoma do leave...
MWC
MAC
Sunbelt
C-USA
what are the chances FOX or CBS or NBC or god forbid espn sign up a tv package that’s enough to make it worthwhile for said conferences to go for it
They could promote a real playoffs with no committee
I think it’s more than possible to succeed given the right Broadcast package but how long will this take, 3 years to get mybe halfway in eyeballs to the A conferences mybe 5 years and if so then you can bet your lucky stars ALL media companies will be pushing for a final playoff game between both leagues
iam ready for this...let the good ole days began!

RE: Stand alone G league, Pros and Cons
If you are suggesting a playoff between two champions, one of which is a 65 team G league, the other one would have to be the FCS champion. Because it sure won't be the P4 champion.

Is anyone right now pushing for a final championship game between Sam Houston State and Alabama? Nobody will be pushing for Bama to play the winner of the playoff designed to determine the 66th best team in college football. 07-coffee3

Cons---Championship will be largely viewed by the general public as the race to be the 66th best team in the country. No media money---minimal TV. Basically a niche sport for hardcore super fans of the schools relegated to that level. Increasingly expensive due to having to cover the costs that used to be covered the NCAA tournament earnings and due to rising costs required to met new government/NCAA regulations designed to benefit/protect the athletes.

Pros--Some of the scores will sometimes be reported on the 10pm Saturday news right after the high school football update.

No, what iam saying is how many eyeballs the G league can get with a real tv package
compare FCS tv eyeballs to the G6 and you will see that your reference to FCS is stupid

RE: Stand alone G league, Pros and Cons
The cons for a G league is that it will have to accept a lower $$$ package than the A conferences to get started which is ok because it will take time to increase the eyeballs
What makes a power conference, it’s ultimately eyeballs, not stadium size or even the money but eyeballs then money, the A conferences have already reached their saturation point, the g conferences have huge potential eyeballs growth

If the SEC and new Alliance freeze us out, than this is probably the best option. A new independent governing organization could craft rules and policies that might allow us to remain a viable option to the power conferences.

The existing packages are organized around how many eyeballs the Go5 conferences are expected to be able to attract. Where is the value add in the arrangement that will bring more media revenue?

Divorcing themselves from the CFP4 or CFP12 and setting up, instead, a "real championship" with "no committee" is a net loss in media revenue to the Go5 conferences ... so that's not the value add.

The end of your posts says "you can bet your lucky stars ALL media companies will be pushing for a final playoff game between both leagues"

My point is there is no public or media outcry for the FBS national champ Alabama to play the FCS champ (Sam Houston St)---so why on earth do you think there would be some massive demand for the P5 super league champ to play the champ of the "Nobody Cares" League?

"Too few cares to carry this concept" league is more strictly accurate than "Nobody Cares" league, but if rounding, it rounds down to "Nobody Cares", not up to "A Lot Of People Care".

Right. I was using a little hyperbole. The reality is it would be very much a niche sport appealing only to the hard core supporters of the individual G5 schools. There would be little to no wider audience among the casual fans and general public. My guess is it’s upside would be maybe similar to MLS soccer. The MLS soccer deal is around 75 million if I remember correctly. So—TV earnings would be about 75 million divided among 65 G5 schools. There’s just not going to be a lot of money for a relegated G5 product.

The Go5 increment in moving from the CFP4 to the CFP12 should be 75m or more if the individual school payments are included ... and the restructured Big12 deal needs to be a partial share for them to sign off on closing their current guaranteed $60m+ before 2026, so the total across the six would be far above $75m/year.

Plus for both the Big12 and the best of the Go5 champions, the teams that make the playoffs will get much more attention in a single game than the total attention received by any team playing through to the "Go6 championship game".

It doesn't pass the "better than the current alternative on offer" test.

That’s not the scenario set by the OP. The scenario in the OP is the G5 or G6 is a free standing division with its own playoff. It would not be part of the future 12 team CFP (assuming that’s even the format for a P4 break away playoff). I’m assuming the only way this scenario plays out is the G6 is left behind by the P4—I cant imagine the G6 voluntarily choosing to separate from the P4.

I have to admire your optimism, but I think your assessment of the current state of college football is out of whack.

It took more than a century for those A conferences to build their brands to their current level. And for half that time, they were building them without any competition from pro sports. Maybe if the A conferences and the NFL suspend playing football for a decade or so to let the G League schools catch up, you might be onto something.

But the G League would be competing for those eyeballs out of the gate, and they won't get to half of what the A leagues have in my lifetime, and probably not yours. No one is going to lose a small fortune year after year by overpaying the G League for years in hopes that one day the A leagues will throw them a bone and agree to let their champion beat the snot out of your champion while only G fans watch. The people that would have to do the paying have stakeholders they answer to, and those stakeholders are looking for a return on their investment. There is no ROI to be had here.

If the SEC and new Alliance freeze us out, than this is probably the best option. A new independent governing organization could craft rules and policies that might allow us to remain a viable option to the power conferences.

Nothing in my comment was directed at how we stack up against Houston... But at the time Houston joined the SWC, North Texas held a 7-3 overall record against Houston. Hayden Fry had UNT rolling in the mid '70s. But with TCU and SMU already in the DFW market, adding UNT made no sense for the SWC. Congratulation.

Back to the topic... My comment was on how the G conferences could band together and salvage college football for their programs.
