RE: Monday Musings for August
2020 Census data is out...
"Isabella County, in the central Lower Peninsula, where the population dropped 8.4%, to 64,394" What's happening in Mt. P.?
Brighter in Washtenaw...
"Washtenaw County, where Ann Arbor is the county seat, up 8% to 372,258." An 8% rise over 10 years is pretty impressive.
The big winner is the Grand Rapids area which grew within county and adjacent counties.

This has me concerned.
Will the big boys with the big payouts try to keep it in their circle of friends?
That said, if UofM needs to play USC, Georgia, Clemson, etc. as their OOC games how do they get to six wins???

Dear steve,
There goes Central's attendance, down the tubes. Wasn't that great when I was there a couple years ago.

I'm kind of surprised that the loss was that great.
I'm going to make a WILD GUESS. I worked at the Census Bureau decades ago. Collecting a census is like voting, they only count those who actually fill out the form or vote. The census can be thought of the number of people COUNTED which will be different than the number actually present at a location as of a given time (say April 1, 2020).
If a large share of a town's population are students and those students are not on campus (a one in a 100 year event) than a good chance many are missed OR counted 'at home' (instead of at school). In 2019 some would say their 'usual residence' was at a dorm on campus. On April 1, 2020, they might have said, "back home with mom and dad.'
I might try to find data on Mt. Pleasant CITY to see if their numbers were down say 3 - 5K.
In large cities, e.g., L.A. (with USC and UCLA, etc.) the loss might not be noticed but in a small town...

Dear steve,
I was surprised at the results as well. Central had a couple of break away runs for touchdowns, and our defense just collapsed.
The reason I brought their attendance as a possible factor, is that the Central folks always bragged how they had better attendance with the local population, than Eastern with the population of Ypsilanti.

CMU would have a better attendance that EMU? Let me put on my shocked face. Mt. Pleasant is a nice city but do its residents have the option of driving 6 miles west and watching an iconic NCAA team or driving 45 minutes to watch professional sports. The answer is a definitive NO!
It is a great school with a fabulous campus and it is over an hour to get to MSU. The car dealers, businessmen and Casino have no other option for sport advertising than CMU. When you are the only game in town, life is pretty good.

Barring the full split of P5 and G5 - i think payday games will still be here for EMU. the SEC still schedules FCS teams don't forget. Now I'm not sure how many more times schools like EMU will be able to schedule 2 payday games a year though.

I don't disagree with you THOUGH:
The number of P5/G5 games will be cut hence there will be more competition by G5 (!) schools for that reduced number of pay day games.
Hence, I expect G5 schools to have less P5 payday games AND earn less from them than in recent years.
I think the bargaining leverage is shifting back to the P5 schools.
When one looks at the 'cash' budget for MAC schools the biggest income item for many or most are those P5 paydays. it is 2K paying fans at a MBB game.

if you look at the big 10 plays 9 conference games already and those teams all find spots on their schedule for g5 teams - i think thatll be the norm in a year or two

How will the performance of a team like EMU affect their ability to get payday games in the future? EMU beat 3 Big 10 teams in 3 years. Beyond Wisconsin in 2021, EMU plays Minn in 2023 and MSU in 2026. That's quite the slow down after seemingly playing a B10 school every year for an extended period. Makes me think the B10 doesn't like paying schools that have a legit shot at beating them.

The good thing, 'Nickle (now worth a penny, after inflation ) is that we do have B1G games contracted through 2026 (albeit not every year).
I'll look at the advanced schedule to see what $ games we have scheduled (signed contracts).
https://emueagles.com/news/2021/7/21/emu...dules.aspx
What I like about the future schedules is that they mix pay days with two OOC home games in SEPTEMBER. Worst thing in the world is to have say only one September home game. Football in MI is a Sept 1 - Oct 15 (or so) prime time with beautiful fall weather. I attended a home game on Halloween in the 90s and there were snow flakes.
P.S. my go to line: My 2 cents (now worth .34 cents after inflation).

Check when Penn St and UM are on Toledo's future schedules.

ONE HUNDRED PERCENT!
Your observation about the fan-friendly dates is correct and then is emphasized by the MACTION November night games late in the frigid season. I missed Roback's throw to Bailey to beat CMU but gutted it out to see Hutchison connect with Sexton against WMU. Both games were brutal from a fan perspective due to the cold, the most popular place at halftime is the restroom and its hand warmers.
