Just as Lance said, Jose finds himself in a situation to once again energize the program like he did in the 90's. The guy has everything going for him and decided that resurrecting the Owls is what he wants to do most which is pretty awesome IMO. I know this hire and process has rubbed some the wrong way but giving Jose a fair shot is the least anyone can do (especially after tolerating 3 seasons of the previous regime).
The Cruz family is baseball royalty in this town and are just plain good people. I am proud to call them friends and can't wait to watch what Jose and whoever he brings on board can do.
As an aside, Coach Hallmark was well deserving of the job as well. This is by no means an indictment on him and I hope he kicks a** wherever his career takes him.

At this point, I don't think a lateral move from UTSA to Rice would be a good career move for Patrick.

I realize that but since he speaks Spanish, I bet he has a lot of connections in South America, Dominican Republic, and of course Puerto Rico. (06-10-2021 07:58 AM)ExcitedOwl18 Wrote: Cruz is Puerto Rican, not Dominican.

I don't know the purpose of this post. I get it that you don't like Joe. Why offer speculation about Patrick essentially turning down an offer. IMHO and nothing against Hallmark, Cruz was the best person for the job, and I am excited about the future. If you don't like Cruz, that is fine. However, I don't think in any way that Rice "settled" on Cruz.

I saw speculating to myself that JK had Cruz in mind all along, since he mentioned from the start of the search the Rice ties, that he stayed in contact with Jose after the Bragga hire because he was impressed (and since then Jose coached with an MLB team), and that JK interviewed Hallmark and others as part of the process more than anything, Cruz was his man. But who knows, it's possible Hallmark was offered more by UTSA or decided not to take the job for some reason, but I doubt it.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that JK did NOT have Cruz in mind all along (other members of the search committee did, as Interweb Owl has insinuated). And that the job was offered to another person before Cruz.
I don't care, however. I'm happy with the result, and hope Jose does big things (again) here.

I think he needs an experienced recruiter with heavy duty Texas ties and an experienced, successful pitching coach.
Agreed, which is precisely why I said Paul J. doesn't provide anything that Jose needs in his two assistant coaches. It was not meant to be a knock on Paul and his coaching abilities.
What is an experienced, successful pitching coach? How many years? What level? What about guys who were successful in MLB but don't want the travel, living away from your family half the year, and other things associated with coaching in MLB or the minors so they do individual instruction with pre-college kids? What is the definition of success? Certain stats, kids drafted, etc.?
Cruz will pick who he thinks gives Rice the best opportunity to win and develop players, and I would not be surprised if at least one is someone who does not fit "the model", but when you look at things closer, you think is a very good selection. Or I could be wrong, and he could pick two guys who have been college assistant coaches for 10 years or more. Either way, Cruz has his vision for restoring Rice baseball and will choose who he thinks makes that happen.

Now, if they can just hire a former Rice football receiver as Head Coach and maybe get a former kicker on his staff, we'd be cookin' again!

I don't know that there was a "purpose." I am very happy to have Jose. I have been a fan of his ever since he was an Owl, and of his father before him and of the whole family.
I'm just speculating. You can offer different speculation if you speculate differently.

I doubt Cruz was our primary target, but I'm excited for him and for the program nonetheless. It's always a good day when a former player comes back to coach.

RE: Cruz Jr Hired as Next Coach
I am happy to have the energy. Again, a player (even a first ballot all star) returning to his alma mater isnt a panacea.
Honestly, I am skeptical. I hope Jr rolls through with the expectations.
But, I wil be convinced with results.
Tony Gwynne -- 97% first round All Star returned with great fanfare to *his* alma mater, and proceeded to do an amazing face plant.
Again, color me skeptical on the choice. Not negative, as I will absolutely support the team and their new skipper. But I have some very serious misgivings about this (that hopefully are completely unfounded and found to be utterly incorrect in the future).
