I wouldn't say Gwynn exactly face planted. He had a .500 record (exactly .500) over 12 seasons, and won one regular season and two tournament championships (his last two years, so arguably on an upswing until his death) and made three NCAA regional appearances.

I like this hire, and the thing I like best about it is the statement by Antonio that he "bleeds Owl blue".

At least he didn't say he bleeds navy and white!

(Backstory: several years ago I saw a shirt at one of the on-campus stores that said "I bleed navy and white". My subsequent forehead slap could be heard across campus.)

Yes, and only results will do, as is the case in every sport. The bottom line is... the bottom line. But I am optimistic that this might work, for a variety of reasons.

I, like most it seems, am happy to see this. And I hope it turns out to be a home run. I'll go to a few games in the spring for the first time in a couple of years. Just beat SHSU so my brother-in-law gets off my back.

Well played good sir. Walt's analytics and knowledge of the game certainly would be valuable on a staff

I think the kicker would do better in the front office, behind the scenes where kickers belong.

On a staff, not at the head. I speak my mind too much (as everyone on here knows)

Sounds like exactly what is needed - somebody who will not accept the status quo! Hambone for AD!

And bring that holder friend of yours back as well!

I think he needs an experienced recruiter with heavy duty Texas ties and an experienced, successful pitching coach.

Agreed, which is precisely why I said Paul J. doesn't provide anything that Jose needs in his two assistant coaches. It was not meant to be a knock on Paul and his coaching abilities.

Any names you’d like to see? I think Eric Weaver the pitching coach at San Jac since 2014 ought to be on the list.

Just got this e-mail...

Quote:As a supporter of Rice Baseball, the RBI Club wants to invite you back to campus on Tuesday, June 15th at 6PM CST to watch Jose Cruz Jr. give his first press conference as the 22nd head coach of our storied program. A reception to be held at The Roost for all attendees will immediately follow the press conference. Please RSVP for the press conference and reception via the link below by Monday, June 14th @ 12 PM CST.

Unfortunately, i can't justify coming down for this one event. I'd hope they do a live stream of it for those of us who cannot attend.

Edit: Mike Melendez has responded by saying that the presser will be live streamed with the info going out on Monday.

I hope Cruz hits it out of the park. It is a great way to capture/keep our momentum with this hire. Will the Houston Chronicle send someone to cover this?

Is the live stream available to the public? If so, can someone post the link?

It was always scheduled for Tuesday at 6:00pm. Melendez just texted saying live stream link would be provided tomorrow. I'm assuming it will be for anyone to access.

I have pretty much given up on Rice athletics (and the school too for that matter). However, hiring Cruz will probably get me to come to some games again. I’m c/o 97 so he was the man when I was a student watching games at Cameron Field. I really wanted us to hire Berkman but this is just as great. Congratulations to Cheito and hopefully he can restore Rice to its former glory.
