Sadly, it appears not. It would be an enlightened move to add her to the team’s roster. Does anyone have an insight on how the Olympic team was selected?

Quote: There are two committees that select players to compete on USA Softball National Teams – Men’s National Team Selection Committee and the Women’s National Team Selection Committee. These committees work tirelessly throughout the year scouting events across the country in search of the top athletes for national team selection. Committee members can be found at USA Softball tournaments, USA Softball National Championships, NCAA tournaments, NCAA Women’s College World Series and many other events.

Once committee members identify potential national team players, these individuals may be invited to participate in tryout camps and from those camps they are selected to represent the United States in international competitions.
The best way to be noticed by members of the selection committees is to compete in high level USA Softball tournaments and USA Softball National Championships if you are not currently playing at the collegiate level.

Good job by JMU to enter in the partnership as well. It’s ridiculous that all athletes don’t have a chance to get their names on jerseys all the time, particularly when bookstores are full of jerseys with star players’ numbers but no names on the back.

For better or worse I think that will change for all sports with the pending ncaa allowance of income/compensation based on endorsements/likeness.

This will favor athletes at larger schools with more alumni and larger fan bases. Will also favor schools/players that get more media exposure. Yet another reason to get off Flo ASAP.

People watch college sports, and those people spend money. Might as well have the money (or at least a meaningful chunk of it) go to the players. There’s so many athletes who peak in popularity in college and aren’t able to strike while the iron is hot in terms of financial gain. Not just the P5 schools either. How much official Scotty McGee merch would have been sold in 2008? Tons. Another example I always think of is Colt Brennan, and it came to my mind again when he died way too young recently. That dude (and Timmy Chang too) put Hawaii football on the map to the point where midnight games on ESPN were appointment viewing (back when I was young enough to stay up that late). It’s a shame the revenue generated went to the school (I guess?), ESPN, Dr. Pepper, etc. and not to the player who was out there on the field. He sniffed the NFL, but I just feel like athletes like that deserve to cash in while they’re at their highest profile. Rachel Garcia is a great example too - she’s been a world class player for years and college softball is probably when she’ll have the most eyeballs on her career (outside of maybe the short Olympics window). Those players should be able to get a piece of the revenue generated, and fans would love buying jerseys or other merch that actually has the players’ names on it.

I do see benefits in this, but think it may also lead us down the path of many college athletes becoming “semi pro” and jumping to whatever schools provide the largest revenue stream for them.

You make some good points regarding players who could have positively benefitted. The flip side of this is what happens on a bigger scale with players like Trey Lance and companies like Nike or Adidas, etc. Will they jump/transfer to wherever the biggest contract is offered?

It may be inevitable and unavoidable at this point. Personally have mixed feelings. It wasn’t long ago similar things were considered a “scandal”

It makes sense that an Olympic National Team would have to be selected early, especially if there are qualifying games that must be played to even qualify for an upcoming Olympics. Hopefully CC can be considered for the next round of team qualifications.

Anyone bought these t-shirts yet? Are the sizes normal or run big or run small?

Tracking still has the "shipping label created, USPS awaiting item" message for me. Ordered it the first day so I'd assume it's the same for everyone.

Thanks. I just ordered a couple and went with normal sizes. My daughter is fired up after she saw this. Hope it doesn't take too long to ship :)

The contracts would be between players and companies not the schools.

College athletics are already semi pro and have been for some time. Heck I'd say some big time college programs are run/funded better than some pro teams. I'd rather have things out in the open inside of backroom deals and paying kids under the table. Let the kids make their money while they can because in the world of college sports, one wrong move and your career is over at 21

Everyone is always gonna cheat in every way they think they can get away with, no point letting that keep the kids from making some legit money imo. Hell, it might actually help G5, FCS, mid-majors, etc. since plenty could end up with a choice between being just another guy at a P5 or being the star selling lots of jerseys elsewhere.

Except in the new world of college sports that $ won’t be spread around to G5, FCS, mid-majors p, etc…because once one of their players reaches that level of marketability they are gone to the big boys. This helps the power programs keep their players paid prior to turning pro.

Another example of marketability: Odicci is a guest on the latest episode of The Ringer MLB Show podcast hosted by fellow CC Sabathia and Ryan Ruocco. It's a lengthy interview too by the looks of it; start at the 19 minute mark of a 50 minute episode.

Just listened and it is awesome! Not only is she her usual engaging self, but you can hear the respect the hosts have for her. At certain points, sabathia talks to her like they are members of the same pitching fraternity and they went through several of the same moments. Considering he played for 19 years in the majors, that's pretty friggin cool!

And was a 6x all-star, WS champ, and Cy Young Award winner. So yeah, pretty cool that his niece apparently instantly dropped him as who she wanted to emulate and latched onto CC. She literally inspired a whole new generation of pitchers with that performance. Her play will be on highlight reels for years (if not forever) and you'll hear her name for the next 15+ years when players are asked who inspired them.
