If we start 3-0, we will start 5-0.

White was exponentially great with a great offensive line, and exponentially not great with a not great offensive line. The new quarterback will almost for sure not be as accurate, but all 3 are much better runners and will also be able to buy more time in the pocket.

I suppose we’ll see. We won 8 games last year with no running game… riding the back of a senior QB who could check us into the right offense and complete passes even when defenses dropped 8 & managed to pressure the QB. Our oline was dreadful… so it’s asking a lot of the new group and a new QB to maintain. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m just trying to be realistic & 6-6 seems fair.

We won with a bad offensive line, a quarterback with zero mobility, lost 3,800 of receiving yardage, and lost a lot of great players. We went 8-3 during what turned out to be a rebuilding year.

Nicholls
Arkansas State 4-7
MSU 4-7
UTSA
Temple 1-6
Tulsa 7-3
Navy 3-7
UCF 6-4
SMU 7-3 H
ECU 3-6
Houston 3-5
Tulane 6-6

Why would we be an underdog to anyone except possibly UCF and Tulsa? What have the other teams done to warrant thinking that half of them will beat us?

Also had a month off in the middle of the season with no games and very few practices.

I understand the sentiment. We rode white.

The question now becomes did Silvefield lead white or did White already know what he needed. If Silvefield can groom a good qb the we will be fine. Otherwise we are going to be relying on a defense that has struggled for a while.

The Arkansas State game will be the game that solves a lot of questions. It'll be our first test on the road against a team in Butch Jones that is trying to revamp himself and will coach with a chip on his shoulder.
I do believe Gunnell will do good, but the playmakers around him will be lacking to a certain degree.

This does make sense

In those close games one play could have swung the result. Yes football is often about making one more play but when it comes down to being that close some luck is involved

Team will need to be better than last year not to regress a little. Yet there is real potential for that should the 6th year players like Dykes become Pitts like and is Gunnell plays BETTER than White. White was good and steady. But Gunnell could be better

Looking at the schedule I suspect 7-5 or 8-4 but recognize the potential for much better, with some potential for a little worse

Beating Moo would bode well of course

They will surprise you this year. They are stacked . Toughest games will be UCF and Tulane . Astate will give them a test as the underdog team but Memphis will roll.

Without much else to go on it sounds like they made a generic prediction. I think we finish 4th at worst in conference.

Since Brady White was the GOAT, Gunnell will be hard pressed to be as good or better than him. He hasn't even sewn up the #1 spot yet. Even so in preseason prognostication (especially in late spring) I always anticipate an undefeated season.

As far as the 6-6 7th place perdition: I stopped wasting my money on Athlon years ago. They will project 10 or 11 SEC teams in bowls and will over hype BYU just as they do every year. It is a worthless rag. They make blunders on every team every year because they just don't put in the work necessary to give useful information. SI is good but is very limited because they focus on only P5 football.

Phil Steele will be mailing out his preseason magazine on June 26th. His is the only one I buy anymore. It is just plain head and shoulders above every other mag of its ilk, and it is useful through the entire season. By the way, he has released his preliminary rankings for toughest schedules this season. He says the Tigers will play the 104th toughest schedule and have the 10th toughest schedule in the AAC. Only Houston plays an easier schedule than Memphis. Based solely on that there is no way the Tigers lose 6 games this coming season!

I only buy Steele as well

And even though White had a string three years, and was really solid, he is not DeAngelo and is replaceable

Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t feel better if he came back

If Norvell was here I would be much less worried about the QB position.

Silverfield is still an unknown when it comes to developing a QB. We don't know what he can do and most aren't great at grooming QBs

isn't that a reason teams have an OC as well as a QB specialist?

Yikes.
If our OL is as good as I know it's going to be... Memphis' running game is going to make some people remember that we've been a good running team for the 6 years prior to last season. It will help the new QB pick up the slack.... I think we have 8-9 wins at WORST in us next year. Should be a hungry group of OL and RBs anxious to prove last season was an anomaly.

Athlons is overly optimistic

Clown.

And that was before we added the transfers from Cinci and Michigan State.
I believe those 2 additions will make us the best O line in the AAC this season.
If the backs can dance thru some holes they punch into the defense this year...the QBs won't be asked to do as much as Brady did last season.

You guys act like Gunnel is coming in with no playing live game experience from a low level team and league.... He only passed for over 2,000 years at AZ and beat USC and played in the PAC 12...

Mark my word, with OL we have coming in he will kill it this Fall!!

Good point. It's really a 3 game schedule. If they cant beat those powderpuffs, fire em all.

I think a good OL could have helped us win 2 more games last season.
Cinci might have still beaten us...but we could have...and SHOULD have beaten SMU and Tulane.
No reason to lose to Tulane...even if they were also running a big chunk of Mike Norvell's offense. (And probably will next season too with Chip Long)

Last year the issue wasn't only the line...The backs were nowhere near as good as they have been the previous 4 years.

Yep. Saw some stats somewhere that showed the significant difference in long runs last season vs the prior seasons with Gainwell, Gibson & Henderson. Some of their runs were just amazing & each of those guys consistently got big yards after initial blocks. We didn't see that last season. Clark & a couple of others are serviceable backs but not in the class of the previous mentioned 3. It made a big difference having to go 10-15 plays for a touchdown vs sudden 6 after 5-6 plays. And with a new QB, there are questions. Hope we have a breakout back waiting to break loose or we may struggle offensively.

I don't think it was the backs. If so...why not try to recruit more backs? We only added 1 to this recruiting class. I think it shows that even though we lost some either to opting out or whatnot...the coaches feel comfortable with the group they have.
Just my opinion...but I think the coaches stressed on the O line, as evidenced by the measures they took to rebuild it.
