Exclamation Athlon predicts Tiger football to finish 7th
Athlon Sports predicts us to finish 7th in AAC... with a 6-6 record.
Yikes.
If our OL is as good as I know it's going to be... Memphis' running game is going to make some people remember that we've been a good running team for the 6 years prior to last season. It will help the new QB pick up the slack.... I think we have 8-9 wins at WORST in us next year. Should be a hungry group of OL and RBs anxious to prove last season was an anomaly.

RE: Athlon predicts Tiger football to finish 7th
Based on our recent performance, finishing 6-6 would be very disappointing. I hope that we perform much better than that. When I talked to the TSF a couple of weeks ago, they expect full capacity for football at the Liberty Bowl and that tailgating will go full blast on Tiger Lane. With a good crowd behind our team and with Silverfield’s recruiting success, I anticipate another run at the AAC championship.

Lots of unknowns about our team this year. Impact of transfers.....starting QB a pretty big mystery......new coaches.....best for them to be conservative considering those factors. Transfers made a huge difference at SMU and hopefully we will see the same.

Our OL will be the strongest area on the team next season. Being able to run the football will make a lot of people's jobs easier...Coach Silverfield, OC Kevin Johns, the QB, the WRs, the defense, and DC Mike McEntyre.
I think a good OL could have helped us win 2 more games last season.
Cinci might have still beaten us...but we could have...and SHOULD have beaten SMU and Tulane.
No reason to lose to Tulane...even if they were also running a big chunk of Mike Norvell's offense. (And probably will next season too with Chip Long)

Last year the issue wasn't only the line...The backs were nowhere near as good as they have been the previous 4 years.

We also lost 3 great receivers, and had a lot of young guys that didn't get a lot of practice. With the same receiving corps and offensive line, the backs would have looked much better. The receivers would have looked better if Gainwell and Taylor were around.

I think everyone around the quarterback will be appreciably better this year. Hopefully, one of the quarterbacks will emerge to be above average. I have a lot of faith that Gunnell and at least one other will be very good.

RE: Athlon predicts Tiger football to finish 7th
Yeah I do believe we will go 6-6 right now. There are a lot of unknowns for this team. We went 4-1 last year games determined by 3 points or fewer. That is a stat that is not sustainable. With graduate transfer taking a hit at our depth, there's just too many unknowns.
The Arkansas State game will be the game that solves a lot of questions. It'll be our first test on the road against a team in Butch Jones that is trying to revamp himself and will coach with a chip on his shoulder.
I do believe Gunnell will do good, but the playmakers around him will be lacking to a certain degree.

backs are only as good as their blockers on the O line.
Asa Martin was a 4* transfer from Auburn... so I don't believe we didn't have at least one good back. Clark and Watkins got most of the carries. Clark got over 130+ carries for 561 yards.
Now you can say it was a combination, poor backs, poor OL. If that was so, how come we only added ONE running back to the recruiting class?

Arkansas State loses 2 of their top 3 receivers receivers, their top running back and a lot of other key seniors from a team that went 4-7. We are 26-2 at home the last 4 years, with a 1 point loss to #10 UCF and a 1 point loss to Iowa State, only because Henderson sat out.

Sure, we are all of a sudden going to go 6-6. Some of our fans sure do like to keep it "real." 03-lmfao

I do not see Kalyn Grandberry's name on the roster for 2021.
Did he transfer?

Brady made up for a subpar run game and really bad defense. Hard to see how we’re within a game or 2 of last year.

White was exponentially great with a great offensive line, and exponentially not great with a not great offensive line. The new quarterback will almost for sure not be as accurate, but all 3 are much better runners and will also be able to buy more time in the pocket.

I suppose we’ll see. We won 8 games last year with no running game… riding the back of a senior QB who could check us into the right offense and complete passes even when defenses dropped 8 & managed to pressure the QB. Our oline was dreadful… so it’s asking a lot of the new group and a new QB to maintain. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m just trying to be realistic & 6-6 seems fair.

We won with a bad offensive line, a quarterback with zero mobility, lost 3,800 of receiving yardage, and lost a lot of great players. We went 8-3 during what turned out to be a rebuilding year.

Nicholls
Arkansas State 4-7
MSU 4-7
UTSA
Temple 1-6
Tulsa 7-3
Navy 3-7
UCF 6-4
SMU 7-3 H
ECU 3-6
Houston 3-5
Tulane 6-6

Why would we be an underdog to anyone except possibly UCF and Tulsa? What have the other teams done to warrant thinking that half of them will beat us?

heading into this season...our OL was supposed to be much improved this year.
And that was before we added the transfers from Cinci and Michigan State.
I believe those 2 additions will make us the best O line in the AAC this season.
If the backs can dance thru some holes they punch into the defense this year...the QBs won't be asked to do as much as Brady did last season.

I think we had 2 full practices in the 28 days between ASU and SMU; which is the only reason why we lost to them. Gainwell opts out 6 days before the opener and Coxie opts out after the 2nd game, which not only hurt in itself, but deprived the kids of much needed practice time. The defense also played reasonably well after the loss to Cincinnati.

The same no excuses for tough losses clowns are the ones keeping it "real" by pointing out that we won a couple of close games.
