RE: Bragga is OUT Per Kendall Rogers
Wade Townsend (who’s crazy but was dead on the money about Bragga and JK) says hire Chris Kolkhorst if you want to be great, Hallmark if you want to be good, and Berkman if you want to people to get interested again.

Chris Kolkhorst works in insurance so pretty sure that’s not going to happen but the rest is worth noting.

I'm sorry, but it is not a conference uniquely-ill suited for us. Academically, perhaps, but this is an athletic conference, and athletically, this is about who we have become.

Athletically, the SWC was uniquely ill-suited for us for about a 20-year period 1968-88, when we were seldom competitive in any sport. If we want to make this conference ill-suited for us athletically, then we need to start dominating it. If anything, given our recent records in major sports, this is a conference that is too good for us athletically. Only the women are hanging in there and giving us reason to think we belong.

Is Lance Berkman even under consideration? Or was he permanently blackballed for taking the wrong position on the transsexual issue?

RE: Bragga is OUT Per Kendall Rogers
I would try and determine which coaches can best play to our strengths. I would list our strengths as follows:

1. You can play and train outdoors for baseball all year in Houston. Northern cities just do not have that (and it is amazing that schools like Michigan can attract kids when they cannot get a comfortable home game until late April).
2. Texas and the Houston area is one of the best recruiting grounds for baseball in the country. I would guess it is top 10 easily, and maybe top 5. There is just a lot of talent within an hour's drive (non-rush hour) of Rice.
3. We are one of the best academic institutions in the country, so if baseball doesn't work out for any reason (pop goes the knee or shoulder), you can have a Rice degree, if you work for it.
4. (Assumption here-do not know this for sure). We have one of the nicer home fields and settings in college, to play in.

I hate to say this, but our "long tradition of great baseball and putting players in the pros" is probably too stale now, for the average kid we are recruiting. We won the CWS in 2003; a kid who is a 9th grader and just getting interested in the college recruiting process wasn't even born then. That would even apply to HS seniors.

Can you elaborate on Childress’ style of play?

It seems to me that he played similarly to WG-Very strong pitching, sometimes lacking on the offensive side.

I guess one distinction might be that Childress has always had lots of “power pitchers” on his staff whereas Graham tended to recruit more “crafty” pitchers, especially toward the end of his career.

Strong pitching point is correct but that’s about all I would say is similar.

Have you seen one of his practices or pre game BP’s? Huge emphasis on effort as opposed to results. Multiple players hurt during both practice and BP when it was entirely avoidable. Pretty sure one is his star players Nick Banks broke his nose or something during BP at Reckling several years ago and that’s not the first time something like that happened according to my Aggie friends.

Not a knock on the hustle mentality but it’s different than the let them play and let the talent speak for itself mentality of the OG.

Yeah, right-- Wayne was a laid back coach who just "let them play". Say what? Childress, like Wayne, built his teams around strong pitching, defense and sound fundamentals. The primary difference was that offensively Wayne was more Earl Weaver, whereas Childress played the small ball game and very aggressive baserunning.

Ahhhh Walt. Always one to throw gas on the fire. Anyways maybe it would help if you knew who I am.

My name is Kirby Taylor.

Proud to be an ex-aggy and alumni of San Jac and Rice University. Unlike most, I do know what it’s like to play for both men. And without getting to personal, I would never recommend anyone play for Childress. On the other hand, playing for Wayne Graham was the best decision I ever made - I became a better player and better man.

I’ll apologize to anyone I have offended since joining this board. I generally just wanted to stir the pot and get some laughs. Walt you especially, I am sorry for tagging on you constantly and questioning your credibility. I truly love the passion everyone brings because trust me, former players are even more passionate. You guys have no idea how excited we all are that we are moving on from the failed experiment.

My final thought is my opinion is what it is, mine and mine alone. If JK wants to entertain the Childress hire then so be it. I feel strongly about him not being our next HC. Happy to divulge my reasons in private.

Good post.

And fwiw....I've heard this exact same thing from others who played for RC.

Nice to see perspective from a former player and appreciate your insight into Childress. While I am NOT a former player of Childress I am intimately familiar with his "style" from parents of some of his former players (FYI, these players were studs on the team so parents did not have any issue with "playing time" as some parents are known to complain about). I would prefer not to have Childress as well for the reasons I've been privy to. Walt has mentioned several candidates who I feel would be really good for Rice. I just hope that whoever the coach is that he brings with him coaches/recruiters that know Texas and Texas HS coaches (both HS and select) and build relationships with same. Recruiting and development is the path to future glory.

Don't worry about offending people. There are people on here who seem to do that for a living.

And your unique perspective is indeed a valuable one.

Hallmark, Van Hook, Berkman....

To me, this is the best direction for Rice to go. Any one of those 3 would be a good hire IMO.

Agree!!! I love Janish as well just not sure he wants it but I do think he should be considered/interviewed. I have no idea what his level of input was into recruiting but our fielding was much better than in the past few years and he was directly responsible for that IMO.

Eh I have definitely said some not so nice things, so like I said, sorry everyone.

Anyway, yes Rice connections or at the very least Texas roots need to be priority #1 with this hire.

Hallmark, Berkman, Jose Jr., Janish, Van Hook. All great options IMO. Having played for both Pat and Clay they have my 100% support. And for the times Lance helped out with BP/fall ball and had me hitting balls off the batter's eye (I swear this is true), he gets my stamp of approval as well. Paul and Jose have more baseball knowledge than I ever will and are also amazing guys - they also are easy to get behind. If we are going to stink then at the very least let us have an Owl at the helm (yes I know Clay was a Longhorn but he was at Rice enough to qualify as honorary).

I wonder, as an AD with limited exposure to Texas, does Joe really appreciate the extreme importance that building those relationships carries? Does he consider it appropriately in hiring coaches?

I look back at Matt Rhule's hiring at Baylor. He was an outsider and he realized it. From the start he hired the past president of the THSCA and a one of the most successful and popular Metroplex coaches to join his staff. He needed Texas credibility and he hired it. In a poll taken a couple of years ago, Texas Football asked Texas HS coaches which D1 head coaches they trusted most. Patterson was #1, but Rhule was #2. For an outsider to reach that level of trust and confidence in a few years was truly an amazing accomplishment, and results on the field reflected the importance of doing that.

I hope Rice can recruit nationally in all sports. Given our academic constraints (which I would not change, except maybe to make the process more efficient), I think we probably need to fish in a bigger pond than just Texas. But Texas always needs to be the primary focus. And that takes having (or building) relationships with Texas HS (and select baseball or AAU basketball) coaches.

Fred brought several Texas HS coaches into his staff and had the philosophy of recruiting "anywhere that was a nonstop flight on Southwest Airlines." I think both of those are good ideas.

lol. No need to apologize, Kirby. And, yes, you having first hand experience with Childress certainly changes my perspective (though, in fairness, by the time you arrived at South Main, Wayne had mellowed quite a bit). I think most former players from your era forward would be strongly behind Pat. Ryan Chandler gave him a ringing endorsement last night on twitter. As I've posted before, he's the only candidate out there that checks virtually every single box. I like both Paul and Clay, but I just don't see us hiring an assistant coach for the top job this time round. And while both have assisted in recruiting at Rice and at Oklahoma, neither has been the primary recruiting coordinator. Berkman would be an exception to the normal "rules" and prerequisites since he would bring immediate buzz to the program and provide a jolt to a program currently on life support.

Clay was the recruiting coordinator after Pat left. He's also the primary recruiter at OU.

Not saying I disagree with you, Walt about Pat being the logical choice (I agree) but Clay is a viable candidate.

@Owl1998 and @RiceOwl (and anyone else)... What do you guys know about Rick McCarty at ACU? Don't think he's the right hire at the time as he doesn't have a connection to the Rice program nor is he a "big name" that would excite people, but he did a really nice job with the Dallas Baptist pitching staff and ACU won the Southland this year in his second real season (excluding 2020).

Happy to divulge my reasons in private.

Wasn't Pope the recruiting coordinator after Pat left? I'm pretty sure he was.

Pope took over after Clay left.
