Don't think he's the right hire at the time as he doesn't have a connection to the Rice program nor is he a "big name" that would excite people, but he did a really nice job with the Dallas Baptist pitching staff and ACU won the Southland this year in his second real season (excluding 2020).

McCarty is a really good coach. Not sure if he will get a shot at Rice. However, who knows?

RE: Bragga is OUT Per Kendall Rogers
I know zero about the ACU coach. Sounds like he did a great job, but for the reset we need IMO we have to stick to someone who is already extremely familiar with the program and university. Thus the short list of Owl-related candidates being tossed around.

I’ll apologize to anyone I have offended since joining this board. I generally just wanted to stir the pot and get some laughs. Walt you especially, I am sorry for tagging on you constantly and questioning your credibility. I truly love the passion everyone brings because trust me, former players are even more passionate. You guys have no idea how excited we all are that we are moving on from the failed experiment.

My final thought is my opinion is what it is, mine and mine alone. If JK wants to entertain the Childress hire then so be it. I feel strongly about him not being our next HC. Happy to divulge my reasons in private.

lol. No need to apologize, Kirby. And, yes, you having first hand experience with Childress certainly changes my perspective (though, in fairness, by the time you arrived at South Main, Wayne had mellowed quite a bit). I think most former players from your era forward would be strongly behind Pat. Ryan Chandler gave him a ringing endorsement last night on twitter. As I've posted before, he's the only candidate out there that checks virtually every single box. I like both Paul and Clay, but I just don't see us hiring an assistant coach for the top job this time round. And while both have assisted in recruiting at Rice and at Oklahoma, neither has been the primary recruiting coordinator. Berkman would be an exception to the normal "rules" and prerequisites since he would bring immediate buzz to the program and provide a jolt to a program currently on life support.

Clay was the recruiting coordinator after Pat left. He's also the primary recruiter at OU.

Not saying I disagree with you, Walt about Pat being the logical choice (I agree) but Clay is a viable candidate.

The very good part about college baseball is, if you win, you can go all the way, any year. Unlike football with its rankings and moneyball approach. Just win, baby! BTW, the 2003 NC was coming out of the WAC, not SWC.

I also continue to think a lot of "where we are" is traceable to WG hanging on too long and the toll it took on recruiting. Period. Not Bragga's fault, not JK's fault. WG's fault. Still deserves a statue and every accolade there is, don't get me wrong, but wasn't infallible.

With the program's decline bound to keep accelerating, we needed a "shock to the system" hire last time to have any chance of arresting it, but instead made a pretty conventional hire who probably had in mind a pretty typical multiyear plan to turn things around, which then got decimated by COVID. So now we're really in the ditch and IMO we need that shock to the system more than ever.

Do tell what "structural situation" you're talking about? The baseball budget has never been higher...Reckling is still one of the Top 25 facilities in the country...over the last 3 years the program has purchased a myriad of state of the art technologies, including Trackman which was deployed this past season (and manned/analyzed in-game by Dominic Cox, sitting adjacent to the Rice dugout). There's also the RBI Club and Baseball Endowment to supplement the budget for things deemed necessary to further enhance the program and the student-athlete experience. And we're located in one of the 2 - 3 hotbeds in the country for college recruits.

Yes, but it remains to be seen if all that can accomplish national relevance from this conference, a conference that is uniquely ill suited for us. I'd rather we have all these things than not, and I'm sure they do a lot of good for us, but I think the conference association is an anchor. And I'm sure you're going to spout about how the conference RPI isn't bad and about how there are no other viable options, and you'd be right on both counts. Doesn't change the fact that there is no and never will be innate enthusiasm at Rice for competing in this conference.

The job of a baseball coach here is to convince kids to come here for the skills development, facilities, visibility with scouts, and world-class academics. The types of programs we want to be peers with can offer the first 3, some can offer all 4, and all of them can offer a 5th thing that we can't: full schedules of games that their students, alumni, and fans are passionate about. So yeah, it's a challenging situation.

Tuition is still clearly an issue. And let's be honest, college BB was not the "thing" it is now when Wayne was hired, so doing something then was a way different situation than now. Now I am now way disparaging his incredible accomplishments, but as per one of the lines in the Godfather, it was pretty clear that "he was slipping". Illiniowl's observations are right on the button....

Maybe by title but Pope was very involved and recruited several of the pitchers on the current staff when Van Hook was here. Agree, Clay was the titled coordinator prior to Pope.

Best name May be Kirk Sarloos of TCU. No idea if he’s available but he’s been around the area playing for the Astros and is one of the top pitching coaches in the country.

Yes . . . but while non-P5 schools definitely can get to Omaha and even win it all, that's been done way more often by public schools (Coastal Carolina, Fresno, Fullerton, etc.) where it typically has cost in-state players way less to attend. Our last CWS appearance in 2008 remains the most recent one for a non-P5 private school. The only other besides us since the early '90s has been Tulane (you could also count Miami's appearances as an independent prior to them joining the ACC circa 2004).

The new rule that allows stacking of athletic with need-based & merit aid should help rich private schools like us, though. But it will also help TCU, Baylor, Vandy, Tulane, etc. and it should also help public schools in states like LA, GA, FL, etc. that have automatic scholarship programs for in-state kids. Will be interesting to see in the long run.

Playing Devil's advocate...and I agree that Saarloos is probably not gonna be the guy...

But last time, he would have been following the OG....much easier to follow the guy that follows the legend.

Saarloos is probably out if the rumor about Schlossnagel taking the A&M job is true.

We need someone who has proven that he can coach and recruit. I wouldn't touch an alum unless he has done both.

All good points. As an a big Aggie baseball fan and also a big Rice fan, I can say there are lots of former Aggie players who love Coach Childress. There is a LONG thread on texags filled with former players (maybe 20) talking about how much Childress impacted them off the field. Was he perfect? Far from it. I dont think he will be the Rice coach, but I do think he overall did a good job developing men. And not invalidating your bad experience with him. No one is perfect.
