I'm sure Paul will be a candidate. I just don't see him at the top of the list. Hopefully, we retain him in some capacity.

Again, as much as I like Matt personally, enough was enough.

Fingers crossed on Hallmark, who's the perfect fit, though I'd take Childress in a heart beat. And, yes, I'd be happy with Lance given the jolt this program needs.

Childress would be a catch, but I suspect another P5 will snap him up.

Pass. A&M is always chasing greener pastures but something seems off with that whole situation.

??? He was chased out by the donor base after having one sub-par year. Last year was their year, with two studs atop the pitching staff, but COVID put an end to that. I would say that Childress and Sarloos are the two best pitching coaching and developers of pitchers in college baseball...and Childress has proven himself in that capacity over the past 20 years-- first at Nebraska and then at A&M. Now, whether he's a good fit for the uniqueness of Rice is another question altogether, but there is no doubt he's one of the elite coaches out there.

We’re not going to have a new AD unfortunately.

The position does need to be filled with haste, especially with in-person recruiting restarting soon.

Agree with this as well. The sooner the better but nothing in haste. I believe this is still an attractive job to most coaches who are available. Just need the right guy. Preferably a "Texas" guy or someone who actively recruits in Texas. I have zero problem with any of the candidates others have listed. I would like to add Saarloos to the mix at TCU but if Schlos goes to A&M Kirk may be in line for the head position. Better conference etc. so I doubt he would consider Rice.

I know this is a tough gig, college coaching and as Bum used to say "there's two kinds of coaches them's that's fired and them's that's gonna be fired" but these are men with families so let's not lose sight of that either. I wish them all the best of luck in their new opportunities.

Saarloos turned us down last time. I can't see him being interested now. Having said that, it's a lot easier (certainly less pressure) coming in now, after we've fallen to this level, than immediately following the legend.

Personally, Id like to see someone with ties to Rice baseball get the opportunity

+1.

Well said.

POP THE BOTTLES LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Really didn't think this was gonna happen...very happy to be proven wrong. No disrespect to Coach Bragga, but it was time for a change. Lots of fun options out there (Childress, Hallmark, Berkman, etc). Will be watching this closely!

Slow and right is much better than fast and wrong. I doubt we are in much danger of players following him to a new gig or recruits bailing.

@KendallRogers
I would also throw former
@AggieBaseball
head coach Rob Childress on that
@RiceBaseball
list. There would be interest, I hear.

No surprise, Kendall is close with Childress. Sounds like he would consider the opportunity.

@KendallRogers
Two names I would keep a very close eye on with the @RiceBaseball search — @HailStateBB top assistant Jake Gautreau and @TexasBaseball assistant Sean Allen. twitter.com/KendallRogers/…

Allen was a candidate last time and is UT's primary recruiter.

2 issues with Childress....and I certainly agree that he'd be a fantastic hire....1) his son will be a senior at College Station HS next year so he may want to take a year off to watch his kid play....and 2) I have it on good authority that he may elect to call it a career and spend his days with his family, hunting, etc.

But....Rice would certainly be a spot I could see him changing his mind for.... and Rob would be a home run hire.

My bet is Hallmark IF Pat can get over the fact that Kaarlgard is still in charge.

Is Jesus a candidate? Because I do think it would take a miracle to reach the heights that are expected by a lot of folks here. This is (IMO) a lot tougher structural situation to step into now than the one WG arrived at, which was still an SWC program and all. But no question we can be a significantly better program than we are.

I also continue to think a lot of "where we are" is traceable to WG hanging on too long and the toll it took on recruiting. Period. Not Bragga's fault, not JK's fault. WG's fault. Still deserves a statue and every accolade there is, don't get me wrong, but wasn't infallible.

With the program's decline bound to keep accelerating, we needed a "shock to the system" hire last time to have any chance of arresting it, but instead made a pretty conventional hire who probably had in mind a pretty typical multiyear plan to turn things around, which then got decimated by COVID. So now we're really in the ditch and IMO we need that shock to the system more than ever.

Do tell what "structural situation" you're talking about? The baseball budget has never been higher...Reckling is still one of the Top 25 facilities in the country...over the last 3 years the program has purchased a myriad of state of the art technologies, including Trackman which was deployed this past season (and manned/analyzed in-game by Dominic Cox, sitting adjacent to the Rice dugout). There's also the RBI Club and Baseball Endowment to supplement the budget for things deemed necessary to further enhance the program and the student-athlete experience. And we're located in one of the 2 - 3 hotbeds in the country for college recruits.

The brand of baseball that a Childress team plays is way different than what Owls and Owl fans are accustomed to. The nugget about his son is interesting, makes sense. Sometimes these guys come back with a vengeance after a break.

If we do go outside the Owl family, I hope we entertain the idea of Tom Arrington, though it’s debatable if he’s a solid fit. The chronicle mentioned that San Jac was in the Juco WS again. Guy just cranks out winners.

Agree with all of that except the part about Reckling. I think it is still nice, but not top 25. I dont think it is a negative, but I dont think I would say it is a huge recruiting chip.

Can you elaborate on Childress’ style of play?

It seems to me that he played similarly to WG-Very strong pitching, sometimes lacking on the offensive side.

I guess one distinction might be that Childress has always had lots of “power pitchers” on his staff whereas Graham tended to recruit more “crafty” pitchers, especially toward the end of his career.

Yes, but it remains to be seen if all that can accomplish national relevance from this conference, a conference that is uniquely ill suited for us. I'd rather we have all these things than not, and I'm sure they do a lot of good for us, but I think the conference association is an anchor. And I'm sure you're going to spout about how the conference RPI isn't bad and about how there are no other viable options, and you'd be right on both counts. Doesn't change the fact that there is no and never will be innate enthusiasm at Rice for competing in this conference.

The job of a baseball coach here is to convince kids to come here for the skills development, facilities, visibility with scouts, and world-class academics. The types of programs we want to be peers with can offer the first 3, some can offer all 4, and all of them can offer a 5th thing that we can't: full schedules of games that their students, alumni, and fans are passionate about. So yeah, it's a challenging situation.

I think that if we start again winning 40+ games /yr, making the top 15 every year, making the playoffs every year, and advancing in those playoffs nearly every year, nobody will care much what league we are in, as was the case in 1997-2008.

Just win. Win and the fans will come back. Win, win, and win some more. Then win the next one.

Yeah, it will be challenging, but it is not a challenge we have never been able to meet. We did before and we can again.

C-USA is a four bid league this year and has averaged three bids over the last 10 years.

It’s not the SEC but it’s hardly our biggest problem especially given conference games are only about 55-57% of your schedule.

Wow what a shock. The AD must have had a lot of pressure from the big donors and baseball alums. Anyway, congratultions to the AD for making the right decision.
