I believe he was a rs-jr last year out of JUCO so he should have two years of eligibility remaining. Looks like he was a back end of the rotation guy (but in the rotation) at RI last year. 6'7" with decent three point numbers, so he could be that stretch 4 falls dog craves. In JUCO he seemed to be a nice shot blocker but that didn't translate to the A10.

With Beck, the freshman Rollins, VCD and now this guy it looks like Kent is trying to transition to a lot more guys who can be 3/4s instead of 4/5s. As long as they can rebound it should put Kent at an advantage vs. most MAC teams that are predominantly 3-guard outfits.
Still need a solid post guy though, IMO.
Shy of that, the roster seems to be very solid in the backcourt and solid on the wings ... JHam is a perfect 4-man with a solid post beside him while any of the wings above look to be good backup 4s. Actually, Beck is proven there and the new guy as well.
All things considered, not a bad pickup this late in the game.

I missed this at first, but he's listed at 185. So maybe less of a stretch 4 and more of a tall 3.

Here's the official link from http://www.kentstatesports.com on the newest commitment: https://kentstatesports.com/news/2021/5/...hnson.aspx
Interesting to note the comment at the bottom of the article: "A native of Brooklyn N.Y., Johnson joins Julius Rollins, Jalen Sullinger, and Cli'Ron Hornbeak to make up Kent State's 2021-22 signing class."
With that said, does it mean that James Jordan is returning or is my math off in terms of open scholarships vs taken scholarships?

I 'd be happy if Johnson is as good as the last transfer they got from Rhode Island - Ric Blevins. At least he was the last to the best of my memory.

Actually ... the last RI 'transfer' (by way of Miami, and Pitt) so to speak was Jim Christian, Blevins RI teammate! But if you're actually talking on the court, it was definitely RB. And yes, Kent would be lucky if Johnson is as good/impactful.

Thanks, Cleveland. I'd completely forgotten about Christian being a teammate!

How many 6-9, 220 small forwards has Kent had over the years?
How many 6-7, 185 small forwards has Kent had over the years?
There have been several PFs of both sizes. If the roster stays as is at 11 players, and JHam is the center ???, I would expect to see Beck and even VCD at PF long before Johnson. Perhaps even the freshman center in the mix, moving JHam back to PF, then Beck then VCD at PF.
While I never saw it with my own eyes (few of us did) don't forget that Beck was the starting SF last year. He only played PF when others were injured or in foul trouble.
The last true SF of this size (6-6, 6-7) at Kent that I remember was Anthony Wilkins.

Chris Evans and CJ Williamson are 6'6"-6'7" wings that we had much more recently than Wilkins. There's probably others.

DJ Johnson is a long wiry shooter-more of a kevin durant type build- who is also a capable rebounder. late bloomer who didn't play organized basketball, aau, etc... util late in high school. really good shooter. question is does he peak as a solid backup forward at the MAC level, mostly as a spot up shooter, or does the kent staff continue his development and he peaks as something more than what he was in limited minutes as a 2nd yr jr in a very good rhode island program. i think it's a good signee. if johnson can earn more minutes in the slightly less competitive MAC and grow into a more natural and complete player, he should help kent compete with good MAC teams. if not, he's still a good shooter off the bench with some height who will board.

Good shooting off the bench is something we desperately needed last year. 3pt efficiency was a real problem. If he can shoot close to 40% from three like he did last year, and play passable defense, he could find his minutes increasing as the season goes on since that was such a weakness of ours last year. Also, we should have very good PG play next year. So shooters will be key.

This aligns with what I've heard from a few asst. coaches back east: He can play, but he hasn't proven to be an 'everyday' player. Translation (in coach speak) he doesn't have a big motor. While he had good juco numbers, a closer looks showed he only started six games. Strictly a bench guy, which he was at RI.
But the fact Johnson redshirt his first year at RI probably bodes well for Kent, if he has matured enough to see he can make some $$$ (Europe) down the road by turning his wick up a few notches (he only took 18 2-point shots last season at RI, less than 1 a game??? Also only shot 43 FTs in juco and just 17 at RI.).
Not a typical recruit for Senderoff as he generally seems to like his jucos/transfers with a little more hair on their chest, so to speak. But nobody doubts the fact Johnson can shoot it so at the very least he replaces Jordan/Smith with the hope his average 4 ppg jumps to double digits, either as a starter or reserve. W/him and Gio on the floor at the same time, teams can't double both.
Agree with the consensus ... a good to very good pickup this late in the game.

Small forwards are not of interest to me.
But spare me the history lesson. I watched them all play and followed them to gymnasiums all over the con fer ence.
Your lengthy response was to an inside joke that has been a part of this forum for quite some time.

I like how they emphasize ALL schools, as if there would be much money to be had by football players other than those at Oho State and maybe Cincinnati. I can see Ohio State and maybe Xavier, Cincinnati and Dayton in basketball. If you look at the other states that have done so, I have no doubt the main purpose of the law is to keep Ohio State form losing football players to schools in states where they can cash in.

Well, it will legalize what boosters have been doing for years.

Dang, Pippen narrowly missed out on all the royalties he could've made from the tens of sales of those "Pippen Ain't Easy" tshirts. Now he's gotta come back.
