Odd, Cleveland, I can't find anything about O'Neal going to Bowling Green. I believe you, though. Thanks for the update.

Thanks, Polish Hammer.
So, it's May 17th and there are only 10 scholarship players on the roster, when they are permitted 15 next season, 16 if Jordan stays. Of course, they may will probably go with the usual 13, but that still makes them at least 3 shy. It will be interesting to see how many they sign and where they come from.

I always think back to the very late and unheralded signing of Al Fisher and his immediate impact and have faith Sendy will find somebody. Of all years, I see this one with the volume of players still in the portal and think we could luck into a quality snag late in the game due to numbers. There are so many kids going to be stuck without a chair when the music stops it would be wise to hold a scholly back just in case.

Agree, polish Hammer. Trevor Huffman was also a late signee. Waters was looking for a big man, but Huffman ultimately was signed to the final roster opening.

Unless I'm missing something that link doesn't seem to link him to BG in any way. The only place I've been able to find it mentioned is on the BG message board without a source cited. I assume it's probably true and this is just another example of the void in reporting we have to deal with.

Just on the off chance that stating players committed on message boards makes it true in these weird time, Emoni Bates is coming to Kent. He was so impressed with his head to head matchup with Hornbeak that he couldn't imagine not playing with him in college.

Look to the left on that link, it has a trail of tweets announcing him going to BG.

Two points: (1) If Kent can find a veteran juco/transfer on the baseline it would not be a crime to only have 11 scholarship players on the roster. This team is loaded with guards/wings already.

Historically, Kent plays 8-9 players at most on a regular basis. We 13 on scholarship, that's 4-5 guys sitting on the end of the bench and now looking to transfer. In this day and age, who needs that headache.

(2) Kent does have a history of getting good players late, I certainly understand when the fan base gets antsy waiting for the news. Also, and someone mentioned earlier, Kent has also done well signing players who have to sit a year (Nuga) before playing. That option is still viable as well.

Unlike last summer when nobody knew what Kent had, four of five starters return for 2021, plus another proven starter (Carry) as a transfer. The key will be finding that one guy who can turn this team from average to good - or maybe two guys that turn it from good to very good.

There quite likely is no Pippen out there in the portal - maybe in juco - but even a solid 12-point, 7-rebound baseline guy would go a long way toward solidifying Kent's roster IMHO.

Cleveland, I generally agree with you about rotation and roster size. The only drawback is unexpected injuries and having enough platers to practice properly. A good solution would be decent walk-ons, but sometimes those guys are had to keep around.

RE: Nuga in transfer portal
Let’s not overlook Sendy working with an expiring contract.
Old AD did not act on renewal, and recruits and transfers with
more than one year of eligibility are aware and will be reluctant
to commit. Current deal ends 6/22.

This ultimately hurts the program

He also needs another assistant and not many will agree to come
In for one year.

Lack of action hurts the program and it all hastens the demise of KSU
Athletics. Needs to turn around quickly with new AD

Actually they need 2 assistant coaches with the unfortunate passing of Brian Barnes. Currently they have Rob Senderoff as head coach, Aaron Fuss assistant coach, & Julian Sullinger assistant coach. They need assistant coach and director of basketball operations positions to be filled.

This is ridiculous ... did not realize it was this bad overall at Kent. This just shows how little upper administration understands the dynamics of athletics and an athletic program.

New AD has some serious work to do both inside the program and with the admin long before he starts looking for $$$. How can a coach recruit and/or hire folks under these circumstances? That's a lot on the shoulders for Senderoff and the remaining assistants. Just not good.

I feel for Senderoff. This situation is a mess, but it's not just Kent State. Senderoff just either be given a nice extension, or be replaced. I'm strongly in favor of the former.

Sounds like a mesa for sure. If they extend him now, it would help him fill those spots, and often a good assistant could bring a good player with him.

Think of the players and coaches that have passed Kent by since the end of the season (when all of this should have been wrapped up). Now, anything less than a 3-year extension speaks just as loudly, in a negative way.

Frankly, the extension should be for AT Least 3-years, judging by the current state of affairs in the world of college BB. It would be in Kent's best interest.

Hiring a new coach (and staff) will likely require Kent to put a lot more $$$ on the table to (hopefully) get a coach as good or better than Senderoff. Not to mention quite likely losing even more players to the portal.

It's amazing to me when any 'administration' which is supposed to have its eyes and ears on the pulse of these things act like the world (business) of college athletics is just plug and play.

In the past, Kent has offset its status of generally having the lowest overall pay-scale and facilities in the league with an admin that was at least in tune with the overall world of college sports and what was needed to stay competitive. If I'm not mistaken Cartwright/Kennedy were on numerous NCAA boards and committees.

Kent actually had a sound reputation for its ability to do more with less, both in terms of finding good coaches and getting solid results (minus FB) in the field of play. Kent used to consistently be 1-2 in those MAC all-sports awards for both men and women. Have no clue where Kent has ranked the last few years.

But Lester (The Disaster) wouldn't touch athletics other than to say 'pay for it yourself'. Warren came with some athletic bonafides, but it never translated and the new guy more and more seems aloof to it all.

Meanwhile ....

Cleveland State basketball coach Dennis Gates signed a new six-year contract. Doubtful he will stick around as he has been considered already for other D1 coaching jobs. But the point is, CSU is setting themselves up for continued success.

Indeed ... haven't seen the fine print but these deals for hotshots like Gates aren't about how long they are, but how much the buyout is for another program to pluck him.

For a reference point Justyn Hamilton committed to KSU on 04/16/20 and TK Smith & Malique Jacobs committed to KSU on 04/19/20.

RE: Nuga in transfer portal
Looks like we picked up an A10 transfer Devale (DJ) Johnson from Rhode Island. I believe he was a rs-jr last year out of JUCO so he should have two years of eligibility remaining. Looks like he was a back end of the rotation guy (but in the rotation) at RI last year. 6'7" with decent three point numbers, so he could be that stretch 4 falls dog craves. In JUCO he seemed to be a nice shot blocker but that didn't translate to the A10.
