They haven't been in the tournament in awhile and have guys transferring out. I have no idea how a P5 justifies hiring a smaller conference assistant from a mediocre program, regardless of whatever roots he has there. On the surface that's like Zac Taylor off the board unqualified.

I don't think Xavier is a minor program anymore. They're a big-revenue basketball program in a big-revenue arena. They're in a conference that gets 3-4 games a week broadcast over-the-air nationwide on a major network (Fox) and half its members into the NCAA tournament.

I daresay that Xavier is higher on the basketball pecking order than Minnesota.

Anyways, if Minnesota likes an assistant coach, they should go with him. P5 schools like Illinois were kicking the tires on Marcus Freeman as head coach this year.

I didn't call them mid major. I said a smaller conference, Minnesota makes obscene B10 money. Xavier isn't even a top tier team in BE. You're probably right that they're still above Minnesota in the pecking order but that would be a relevant debate if Minnesota were trying to hire X's head coach. Taking an assistant from a middle of the pack team in a lesser conference (no one would argue BE is in B10s class) is probably unprecedented.

That line of thinking works in football because there are likely only 20 "Good" head coaches to hire every year...in basketball, you can practically quadruple that number without even getting into assistants.

I'd say the dollars involved in college football factor in as well. There are quite a few coordinators being paid significant enough money that a head coaching move doesn't even make financial sense.

What do top assistants make at blue blood basketball programs? I know Savino was somewhere around $300k here at UC. No idea what kind of a bump he got at UCLA. I did a quick search and assistants didn’t show up...but guess who is the highest paid employee of the public education system of California? Some guy named Michael Cronin.

Freeman was also coming from the premier non-P5 program. The basketball equivalent would be hiring a good up and coming assistant from Villanova or Gonzaga. And again basketball is not an apple to apples comparison because you have so many D1 programs to hire HCs from.

They are just now thawing out from winter.

Imagine pitching recruits from Florida on winters in Minneapolis? Some of our past coaches have said it's challenging enough convincing those same kids that Cincinnati isn't blanketed with snow from December to March.

If you throw pickled herring (an assistant coach from a non-tourney team) on something, there will be Minnesota faithful nearby.

It’s been 60 and sunny up here. Snow is all melted and the lakes are open water. Global warming is bad for polar bears but I’m going to be surfing and tanning myself on the North Coast beaches before too long.

Didn't think I saw it posted, but Marquette fired Steve Wojciechowski over the weekend.

Minnesota released contract details...they are paying the assistant from X a first year base salary that is $450k more than UC is paying its HC who actually had head coaching experience. It’s the silly season.

Not surprising at Minnesota as we know the B10 is awash in revenue overall and especially TV money.

More interesting to me is that an assistant to Travis Steele, who as head coach after three seasons has zero NCAA appearances and zero conference championships, gets a high major head coaching position.

Did Mick, in thirteen years, ever develop an assistant coach who received that kind of offer? Amusing really, because many X fans seem ready to throw Steele overboard right now.

If this guy was that well regarded of an assistant they should have canned Steele to try to elevate him.

Hard to see how being an assistant on a middle of the pack team from a lesser conference develops you to be an upper tier HC in a better conference.

MN must think he has the personal connection and recruiting chops to make it work. Can only hasten X’s downward spiral.

As far as our assistants, most of our own fans couldn’t pick out the names of our own faceless saps in a multiple choice quiz.
