This. I'll reserve judgement on JB and the freshmen exodus until I see what the roster looks like next year. But it's clear the current assistants were not all JB's first choice. You have to try to upgrade the staff just the same as you upgrade talent on the roster.

Brannen's biggest miss thus far was not being able to hire Antoine Pettway from Alabama. Wouldve been huge.

So he was given seven seasons in which he made two NCAA appearances to see if he could build his program? Marquette has a proud tradition, a national championship banner (more recently than Cincy), and competes at a high level.

I say this only to suggest that it's a very tough business coaching at the high major level and knee jerk terminations are costly and destabilizing. UC, rightly, should stay the course and reassess a year from now. We all may be pleasantly surprised.

A friend who is an IU alum and fan says he's hearing the Hoosiers are making an all out effort to get Brad Stevens on board replacing Archie Miller. Brad seems a great choice but would he leave the Celtics for Bloomington and a major rebuilding challenge to get IU back among the schools that now lead the B10?

I could be wrong but the NBA job seems a lot easier with a lot less bull****.

Oh, I agree with you completely. I think it's unlikely they get Stevens--he's got a great gig and the IU faithful are surly after years of missing the tourney and being somewhat irrelevant even in the conference.

I don't see them landing that big of a name at all whether it be Brad Stephens, Virginia's coach, or Gonzaga's coach. If they don't land one of those 3 they'll be right back to where they've been for the last 20 years. Maybe get some high recruits at first, but if they don't make a run to the final 4 back to square one.

I'd argue that both Michigan and Ohio State (Edit: Upset today doesn’t change this) are more attractive destinations in the Big Ten for both coaches and players at the moment.

Outside of history, I don't think there is much of a difference between Indiana, Purdue (in-state at that), Illinois, Iowa, and maybe even Wisconsin these days.

It's been a long time since Indiana was consistently good and I don't think kids hold them in the same regard as North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and UCLA (lost their national appeal to a certain extent as well).

They are one spot ahead of Cincinnati in all time wins and outside of going way back to the 40s and 50s they are really just known for Bob Knight who I wouldn't think kids these days would respect. I guess there is the Hoosiers movie lol.

I think all of what you're saying is whi Indiana kind of can't afford to NOT get a guy like Stevens. In truth, it is a harder job...you don't get any downtime and the level of scrutiny is very different...but if IU came in and laid down a 7 year/$55M contract with, say, the first 4 years fully guaranteed, I think he'd have to consider it.

I'm really skeptical they can get stevens but if I were Indiana I'd make an all out play for chris beard.

i actually don't think he has to for all the reasons you stated in your post. He's not going to get paid the way he would if he went to iu but he's still getting paid pretty good rn. When he decides to return to the college game, he'll always be able to find a job. Finally, he's coaching at the highest level and there's something to be said about that. i've watched plenty of blue blood programs with 4-5* recruits run some of the worst offense, make brain-dead bball IQ level plays, and brick shots like that was their job. i know a bunch of ppl think the pro game is boring but it's the highest caliber of the game. Why subject yourself to working on getting the training wheels off of froshes and sophs when you can work with high quality pros?

I think IU has a lot going for it outside of history. Lots of booster $, fan support, facilities. But the biggest draw (to me) is the local high school talent. You could literally field a team of 4/5 stars just in the greater Indianapolis area.
