RE: College Hoops Job Carrousel 2021
I don’t think Leitao got worse as a coach. It’s just DePaul itself fell off a cliff exiting CUSA and entering the Big East. In DePaul’s 16 years in the Big East, they have 3 non-losing overall records — 2 by Leitao, 1 by Wainwright. Oliver Purnell, who was successful at 4 different stops before DePaul, ran into a dead end.

It’s not that the coaches are bad. Purnell and Leitao were proven good coaches. It’s that DePaul has been a graveyard since entering a league over their head. It could take a HOF-level coach to dig them out.

those 2nd times thru never seem to work anywhere near as well.

Depends on the sport. Mack Brown is doing just fine. Dave Leitao...

Mack Brown might be one of the exceptions. With that said, it's not like he's knocked it out of the park yet either. UNC nearly made the CFB playoffs a few years ago. The Tar Heels have been good under Brown but certainly nothing I haven't seen in Chapel Hill under other coaches.

John Robinson and Johnny Majors never could duplicate their first go around at USC and Pitt respectively.

I'm trying to think of a coach who had a clearly better second go around? Or even one that equaled the first? Bobby Wallace is a name that comes to mind. Otherwise?

Chris Ault at Nevada. Three non-consecutive stints as head coach there over a 35-year period. All of them varying between solid and great, spanning from Division II into FBS and the Mountain West.

I had to Google Bobby Wallace to find out who he is and what sport he coached. I guess if you follow D-II sports you'd know he coaches football at North Alabama.

Gates followed by Scheyer. Nobody else is touching that job in that article. Plus, it has to be a Chicago guy to get it done there.

I was wondering what happened to Tom Kleinschmidt. Turns out he’s a high school coach in Chicago. That’s who I think of when I think of who should be coaching the Demons.

Tom Kleinschmidt is likely my all-time favorite DePaul player. I read about him recently, in fact.

Scheyer intrigues me. He might be a fine choice. I would be fine with Gates but Payne might be my preference.

Kleinschmidt just won a city title, in fact.

Payne makes quite a bit as an NBA assistant, so ante up!

It's more Jeff Goodman.

Yep. For football, Stadium = Brett McMurphy. For basketball, Stadium = Jeff Goodman.

Neither will work. DePaul is a commuter, city school. When the administration and the coach embrace city kids, they win. When they don't, they lose. Fat Pat recruited the public league and turned the program around quickly. Unfortunately, he had other issues which caused the program to collapse again.

The team needs to reflect the student body. Hiring guys like Kleinschmidt or Scheyer would be a mistake. These guys are going to go after the same kids Georgetown and Marquette recruit. More often than not, they are going lose these types of battles. Those schools recruit students from private schools or from the suburbs, not inner city kids.

DePaul should be going after the kids schools like Louisville and Cincinnati recruit, and they need a coach that will recruit to their commuter school, inner city, first kid in family in college, student body.

I don't think he will take the job, but the guy who would be a great fit is TJ Otzelburger at UNLV. TJ is a midwest guy. He is from the Milwaukee area and his wife is from Iowa. He came up through the JC ranks, and tends to recruit inner city kids. He is a great recruiter. But, he has only had a year at UNLV and I don't think DePaul would be willing to pay him enough to consider the move.

I thought I heard that Otzelburger was looked at as the favorite at Iowa State.

I'm not from Chicago. I've been there a lot for work, but I know Chicago just enough to be dangerous: not very well.

You hit on a point: DePaul is described as inner city. I've ridden the L (the red line) north past both DePaul and Loyola. Someone from Chicago may be able to answer this for us outsiders? What are the differences between DePaul and Loyola? Do they serve the same demographic? I know they're both Catholic and are on the same train line. I know Loyola is Jesuit, while DePaul is Vincentian. I know DePaul has traditionally played sports at a higher level as a major independent, in C-USA, and in the Big East, while Loyola has been in the Horizon and now the Valley. I also know that DePaul played for years at the Rosemont Horizon before moving into the new downtown arena, while Loyola plays on campus.

Porter Moser of Loyola has been connected to the DePaul job. I know DePaul is in the Big East, but is it that much of a step up from what he has built Loyola into? I know DePaul has a higher ceiling, but is it attainable?

As a DePaul fan and former Chicago resident who is fairly familiar with both campuses ... your assessment is accurate. As is MU88's.

Moser might feel a certain loyalty that would prevent him from leaving Loyola for DePaul. He would be an outstanding hire.

DePaul men's hoops' main challenges: 1. it has been down for so long that there is a stigma attached. 2. the Big East is quite good, making the task even tougher.

DePaul is somewhat like a private school version of the University of Memphis. Both schools are home to lots of students from modest socio-economic backgrounds and located in cities with large African-American populations. However, DU is actually fairly academically prestigious (though not on the level of Georgetown or Villanova). The UofM is not.

I cheer for a lot of schools for many different reasons. But DePaul is special in that it represents my passion for Chicago and the Catholic faith. It's been rough to see so many years of bad hoops.

I hope the next man can do good work.

That and the expectation that the Pitino genes will kick in and he'll start winning? He did have sporadic success in Minnesota; if he can rejuvenate the New Mexico program and reverse the trend of falling (but still strong) attendance, they could be in a pretty good place. Plus he's only 38.

Gotcha. I'm not Catholic, and I don't normally associate big private school with inner city, but once I realized that the school is named after St. Vincent De Paul, I made the connection. That makes a lot of sense. The school is not exclusive, and therefore has wide appeal.

You're both right: today's recruits don't know who Mark Aguirre and Terry Cummings are, and that the Blue Demons were once great. DePaul basketball has been a punchline for a long time. And, now that they're in the Big East, it's a lot tougher. But, the ceiling is really high. If they can ever get it going, DePaul can be Chicago's team once again. Of course, that's been said for over 30 years now.

When you mentioned MA and TC, it jogged my memory of Dave Corzine, the Blue Demon big man on the 1970s. I always enjoyed watching him play (at DU and in the NBA).

It looks like DePaul and Loyola are both in the North Side, UIC is in the West Side, while Univ. of Chicago and poor ol’ Chicago St. are in the South Side.

I’m not sure what separates DePaul from Loyola. Good question.
