Huge buyout too. IU isn’t messing around. Wonder who the target would be? Drew?

If I was going to bet money on it, I'd bet on Beilein being their next coach.

I'm not saying that's a smart move on IU's part, but given that they paid a huge buyout and the implication is that they already have someone lined up, that points to someone who is already available and is a "name" who the AD thinks would "win the press conference".
It takes 3 years to rebuild...by then you have 70+ year old leading the program. Don’t think so.

If he could complete a rebuild in three years, he could easily have another five to ride that wave before passing the torch. If I'm IU, that's as good a gamble as most.

IMO it’s way too risky for the university, especially the athletic director. If Beilein had a history with the Hoosier program (like Mack Brown at UNC or Mark Richt at Miami), then you can override obvious concerns. Beilein left Michigan partly because he couldn’t understand young athletes who wanted to turn pro; and then he goes to the NBA for a short stint. At some point, it’s too many red flags and Indiana should have other candidates.

Indiana will make a splash hire. It won’t be a coach who has done well at a mid-major, but a coach who has done well at a power program.

Beilein, Pitino, and Matta all fit this mold.

There’s also Scott Drew and Chris Beard. Pretty hefty buyouts there, but it seems like the boosters are ready to watch Indiana win again.

Here's a list of Indiana coaching candidates from their SB Nation blog, Crimson Quarry.

I think Porter Moser is the perfect hire and getable for them. Chris Beard would be nuts to leave Texas Tech. He is a former Bobby Knight assistant but then again that's even more reason he wouldn't want to take the job.

RE: College Hoops Job Carrousel 2021
I understand why IU cut Miller, but I also think it's a really quick hook and expectations too high at Indiana.

The big injury this year in a loaded Big Ten; and their schedule gave them ILL, MICH, OSU and IOWA 7 times, including road games at all four!
First Four Out in 2019.

And they had an NCAA season but there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020. While technically true, it's very misleading to point to "No NCAA bids" when they would have been an NCAA team last year.

Like, someone on an A-10 board made a comment about Anthony Grant at Dayton not making an NCAA Tournament in four years. Also technically true but, we're just going to pretend that being #2 in the nation at 29-2 last season doesn't count as an NCAA bid?

Mack Brown might be one of the exceptions. With that said, it's not like he's knocked it out of the park yet either. UNC nearly made the CFB playoffs a few years ago. The Tar Heels have been good under Brown but certainly nothing I haven't seen in Chapel Hill under other coaches.

John Robinson and Johnny Majors never could duplicate their first go around at USC and Pitt respectively.

I'm trying to think of a coach who had a clearly better second go around? Or even one that equaled the first? Bobby Wallace is a name that comes to mind. Otherwise?

I've very much interested in this hire as well! I love the enthusiasm for Moser but if he's coaching in Chicago it's going to be at Loyola. He'd be crazy to leave Loyola for DePaul imo.

I don't see any slam dunks in that group. Mostly a lot of retread, "looking for different scenery" type guys. Bobby Hurley has pretty much been a bust at Arizona State.

One name that never comes up that I like is Richman at NDSU. The Bison's football program gets all the love but their hoops team is a contender in the Summit every year. Issue with him is he's a North Dakota guy through and through....

The three opt-outs definitely put a damper on the Orange Bowl. It is a mighty feat to accomplish what he did before, but he seems on the path. He’s definitely not doing worse.

Gates followed by Scheyer. Nobody else is touching that job in that article. Plus, it has to be a Chicago guy to get it done there.

I was wondering what happened to Tom Kleinschmidt. Turns out he’s a high school coach in Chicago. That’s who I think of when I think of who should be coaching the Demons.

just doing that is a positive.. Not many even do close to as well. Bill Snyder comes to mind at Kansas St.

So Big Ten had 5 teams miss the tourney. 3 of them- Penn St, Minnesota, and Indiana will have new coaches.

I agree, Snyder had a pretty good second run at K-State. Not quite as good as the first go around but definitely legit before fizzling out a bit at the end. Similar to Robinson at USC. Bill Walsh's two stops in Palo Alto(2/3 years) were too short to draw any real conclusions.

Bobby Hauck at FCS power Montana might turn out to be a good rehire. The Griz will be a preseason Top 10 team in the fall after taking the spring off.

If nothing else, I'm not sure if anyone's second tenure was clearly better?

Leitao was a disaster at DePaul...
