RE: CAA MBB Transfers 2021
Head spinning with all of the transfer portal entries. Up to 800+.

Cannot underestimate the void Luke will leave for us no longer having a defensive stopper. Huge need to bring in someone with the same defensive mentality, or have an existing player assume that mantle, but don't see it with the latter. Luke had it from the beginning in his HS days.

Wasn't Yuri supposed to be a strong on ball defender? Not saying he'll be as good as Luke next year, but that's a potential spot to take up that mantle next year.

Yuri's got the quickness and athleticism to be a great on-ball defender, but didn't display that this year, and I don't recall that being a calling card in HS. It's one of two areas I hope he'll really focus on in the off-season. That and turnovers. He was tied for 4th on the team in steals and should be able to impact that stat much more.

This is supposed to be Julian Lewis' calling card, but that's a lot to ask of a freshman. Agree with you that it would be great to bring in a grad transfer or immediately eligible transfer who has this trait.

We are going to miss Luke ... a lot ... in many ways.

CAA MBB Transfers 2021
Noticed Xavier RS Sr F Jason Carter is in the grad transfer portal. The one-time Ohio player was very close to Coach Kemp, if I remember correctly. I'm not sure he'd be interested in moving to a mid major for his final season, however. 6'8 230lbs. Averaged around 7ppg /6 rebs in his time at Xavier. Averaged about 17 at Ohio before the transfer. He's a grown man who would be an impact player in the CAA.

RE: CAA MBB Transfers 2021
Out of curiosity, I took a look at Luke's twitter.

He's been followed by coaches at Utah State, Montana State, UIC, Incarnate Word, Colorado State, Troy, Hawaii, Cal State Northridge, Bryant, UW-Milwaukee, South Dakota State, and Loyola.

I don't know if P5 coaches are less likely to follow players, but I would think he has his sights set on a P6 team, or at least a top tier mid major. Utah State and Loyola are both very solid programs, and Colorado State is on the upswing, but I was expecting some bigger name schools.

I think the days of guys playing out their eligibility at most schools is a wrap. A productive RS Jr at the mid major level is as good as gone.

Don't forget Luke isn't playing for the coach who didn't recruit him and almost certainly would have left if he had received anything more than minimal attention on the transfer market two years ago.

You may yet be right. But until we see guys like Connor outplay their recruiting status and immediately mercenary their way upwards, I will not have seen enough evidence for it.

Luke played every bit as well as Pierce did before he transferred and appreciably better than Milon, who had several P5 offers, including Ohio State. I understand that the overall talent level in D1 is now going to be much higher and that there are many fewer starting spots available now but even so...this would be a very underwhelming list. I don't think CSU, USU, SDSU have meaningful open spots unless people are leaving that I don't see. In a normal year, I would think a school like Wisconsin has a hometown spot with six of their eight rotation guys being seniors. But no idea how many of those guys are staying now.

I assume you meant Loyola of Chicago. There are also Loyola (MD (Baltimore)) which plays in the Patriot League and Loyola Marymount which is in the West Coast Conference. Just based on your list, it could just as easily have been one of those (although Loyola Marymount does usually go by that name). There is also a Loyola in New Orleans but they don't play Division I. Luke might go to Milwaukee for obvious reasons but the only reason to go to those other schools rather than stay another year at W&M would be if they offered a grad degree in a field that W&M does not offer. Maybe he wants to go fishing in Hawai'i.

An article on Zagsblog says Jarrod West has received offers from Rhode Island, Louisville, Pitt, and Wichita St. West says he wants to commit “sooner rather than later.”

The offer process with transfers is a little frustrating; some transfers keep getting offers but most never announce any offers even though they’re talking with schools and eventually commit somewhere. For WM it’s hard to know if a player they start following is a passing interest or someone they really want because we never hear of any offers.

Good point above. I was a little deflated when I saw the list, in part because I was hoping Luke would get some higher level interest and two, I don’t see W&M taking a backseat in basketball or anything else to this collection of schools.

I think Luke could generate a lot of excitement at Kaplan next year. If he doesn’t get a much higher profile opportunity, I hope he sticks.

Of course that’s a fan view. Luke could have many other interests to pursue. All the best and if he is fully out, just sorry I didn’t see him play more often for us.

Yes, Loyola Chicago.

And I had the same thought, Luke might stick around here over going to South Dakota State, but again this is just based on twitter follows, so he could have plenty of other coaches contacting him

Perhaps Howland and Nichols know one another with Howland's coaching history in South Carolina.
