Certainly the administration has ultimate blame, but Rowe didn’t do his job either. I agree that Anyone could/should take the job if offered. They still have to perform though and are responsible for their own results. No pass for Keener either. He sucked and has the lowest winning percentage of any JMU coach.
The common thread, to your point, is Jeff Bourne who has presided over multiple Hirings and firings. Under his watch the most important program at JMU has had its 2 worst coaches in history, had its first ever consecutive losing seasons (then added many more), and destroyed the fanbase in a slow methodical fashion. He isn’t a basketball guy yet has somehow survived with Presidents who were very lenient on performance and a Duke Club membership that accepted failure without consequences.
Bourne’s record in his tenure shows that he has 15 losing seasons in 21 years.
It is hard to fathom how an AD doesn’t get fired for a record that bad and that prolonged in the only sport that can actually be profitable for the department. Did anyone say Money Matters? It is also the only sport that can garner the highest level of national attention for JMU.
Can you imagine VCU allowing losing to go on persistently like that? How about ODU? Or anyone else that is serious about basketball?
We have signs that this year might lift the Bourne resume to losing only 15 out of 22 years. I certainly hope so and for the good of the program and the $100 million investment in the AUBC, we absolutely need it. Perhaps we see a nice upcoming transition to an AD that is a mover and shaker in the college basketball community. Some new applicants may be interested now that JMU is sitting on a brand new Purple Palace and is overdue for a move to FBS football, but we also need a new president who will lean on athletics to enhance the overall University.
