I was called as an emergency contact for an older man in our church. I got to his home about the time the ambulance did. He was having a coronary. The man had lost his wife earlier that year and had been dating a younger woman by about 20 years. He was early 80's and she was early 60's. He saw me by the ambulance, reached out and grabbed my hand and said this, "Pray that I don't die! It's the best sex I've had in years." Those were his last words. Later that night I got a phone call from his only child a daughter who lived a state away. She said, I called the hospital, and they said Papa died before he got there and a neighbor said he spoke to you before they loaded him in the ambulance. I was wondering what his last words were. I delayed a moment by telling her I was so very sorry for her loss, and it came to me, a comforting lie, "He told me to tell you that he loved you very much!" I could not comprehend any reason I should have told her the truth, and he did love her very much and had told me many times. We never think about it but perhaps we should all think about what we want our last words to be, you know, in case we are ever 80 something and a younger woman is wearing us out!
