Malzahn to UCF?

Quote:Former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is UCF's first choice to replace Josh Heupel as the team's head football coach, sources told CBS Sports on Sunday night. Though sources close to the situation say Malzahn has not yet been formally offered the job, 247Sports' Jason Beede and the Orlando Sentinel report that an offer has been made.

UCF hopes to announce its next football coach in the next 24 hours, sources tell CBS Sports. It is not yet known whether Malzahn will accept the position.

Hop on the bus Gus

No thanks.

Plus Tressel has proven that he can recruit Ohio which is needed here. I think Tressel
is less likely to jump from job to job unlike Mr. Stoops.

Eh, almost all will jump pretty readily. I mean Tressel already jumped from us once (and apparently was quite a jerk about it as well.)

That would be interesting...he knows the SE and has a history of success. Just hope you don't get a Tuberville/Strong/Holgs who has that resume and tanks the program instead.

Agreed. I like it overall from a conference aspect. He brings credibility to the AAC, and I think because he was let go from Auburn (and didn't beat feet just prior to getting let go like Tubby), he'll have something to prove.

And if he's bad, well then UC continues to cake-walk to the conference championship every year.

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
It's official. Looks like the AD had familarity with Gus back to their days together at Arkansas State.

Quote:Former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has agreed to become UCF's next coach. Malzahn, 55, will replace Josh Heupel, who left to take the Tennessee job on Jan. 27 on the heels of former Knights athletic director Danny White accepting the same position with the Volunteers.

"I'm thrilled to be the head coach at UCF, and I'm truly looking forward to being part of Knight Nation," Malzahn said in a statement. "It's exciting to be head of a program where the future is extremely bright. I will be hitting the ground running in terms of getting to know our team and everyone else connected with UCF. Our goal is to be ready to win championships."

New UCF athletic director Terry Mohajir held the same position at Arkansas State from 2012-20. Malzahn led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record in his first season as a head coach in 2012. It was speculated upon Mohajir's hiring that Malzahn could be a candidate for the Knights, but it was unknown whether he was interested in jumping into a new opportunity right away after departing Auburn.

Gus to Orlando.

Go to the 12:20 mark if you're interested in Coach Malzahn's presser...

Gus to Orlando.

Think he’s Tommy Tuberville 2.0. Wonder if he will run for Senate in Florida?

Malzahn was the seventh highest paid head coach in the power five conferences this season. He signed a seven-year, $49 million contract extension late in the 2017 season. His current buyout is around $21.45 million. That is a hefty chunk of change anytime, but during a pandemic, it seems extra crazy. Especially considering the Auburn athletics department just cut their budget by 10% in 2019. That was before COVID-19.

So belts are already tightening and you have to pay two major college football coaches for the next four years. And apparently, half of that $21+ million is due within 30 days.

Retiring to Florida is much better than a Condo in Northern KY.

Les Miles out at Kansas after a review of the allegations at LSU. Mike Denbrock did get looked at by them in the past for OC...

Kansas is the burial ground for P5 coaches. Institutionally though, Kansas will always be on the short list for the B10. But B10 fans would mount an insurrection taking on another perennial bottom feeder; angrier than when Rutgers joined the conference.

Early names being tossed around include Tulane's Willie Fritz and Jeff Monken from Army. I think the thought is their offensive schemes would serve as a bit of an equalizer for a locale that doesn't have the talent base. Fritz is very well versed in that region, both as a player at Pittsburg (Kansas) State and coaching at the Kansas JUCO level.

Good candidates and I agree that their offenses would give Kansas a better chance to compete. Hypothetical I know, but one wonders if Brian Kelly had landed at Kansas instead of Cincinnati, could he have accomplished anything close to what he did here? I suspect the Jayhawks would have been more fun to watch--maybe made some of the B12's lower echelon bowls, but recruiting to Kansas may have kept the program from ever taking the next step.

And, of course, if the B10 in their wisdom decides to pluck Kansas from the B12, we know of a worthy replacement school. 03-thumbsup

Ironically, Kansas' greatest team ever was during BK's tenure here- the 2007 KU team went 12-1 and beat VT in the Orange Bowl. Mark Mangino was the coach back then and he got fired because he sat on a player (if you remember Mangino, he was a big boy). They quickly returned to form a couple years later.

Does anyone know if a typical college HC contract has an out for conduct prior to becoming his current schools HC?

ISU sold 43,000+ season tickets in 2019 and regularly fills a 61,000 seat stadium. Campbell turned the team around but it's definitely college football country up there with passionate fans.
