Not saying being at Alabama hurt him, but he probably could have gotten a job like FAU DC without it. Heck I'd prefer him over Tressel at UC even if it was straight from being fired at Arizona had the timing matched up.

Curious Hawk, why do you think he would be a better fit than Tressel? Tressel has been at Michigan St for a long time as a coach and Stoops now ends up as a DC at a CUSA program after being out of coaching for two years. Is there a reason no one else was clamoring for Stoops? What would his recruiting chops be in Ohio and the greater region compared to Tressel? Not to mention, Tressel has been coaching linebackers for a long time too.

Mike Stoops is the 4th best coach in his family his father and two brothers. His defenses at Oklahoma were giving up 400-500 yards a game and the Sooners often had to score in the 50s to win (which in fairness they did have an offense that could do that).

No thanks.

Both he and Tressel have had their ups and downs like most coaches, but I see a lot more ups for Stoops and also a lot more exposure to different conferences and styles played at a very high level. Similarly, I see a lot of (last) name recognition for both in Ohio (Stoops is a huge name at the opposite end of the state), but Stoops should also cast a wider net in terms of contacts. I suppose the LB aspect does favor Tressel, but Stoops did coach LBs @ Iowa back when he started out in coaching.

I was perhaps the first one around here to point out the success Tressel had as a DC by the numbers especially in 2018, but I've since seen MSU fans point out that there was some smoke and mirrors with those numbers. For example, I think their opponent had like -80 yards rushing in the first game of the season when the center kept throwing snaps over the head of the QBs and P. So the numbers early on were incredible, but the defense showed some real holes during the Big Ten season before somewhat getting back on track near the end iirc. To be fair you can do the same to a lot of teams a lot of years so it really needs a deeper dive to fairly evaluate either way, but their version did take away a bit of the luster of the raw numbers.

I'm not upset that we got Tressel over Stoops, but add in the Tressel departure "scandal" and yeah, I think if it were me (as opposed to CLF who has a personal relationship with Tressel), I would have gone with Stoops.

Plus Tressel has proven that he can recruit Ohio which is needed here. I think Tressel
is less likely to jump from job to job unlike Mr. Stoops.

I have a gut feeling UCF is going to screw up this hire. With them still looking for an AD at the same time, who knows who is running the search.

RE: 2020 Coaching Carousel
Here's some info on their hiring process/current status as of Jan 29th...

Quote:Scott Carr, deputy AD for brand activation, is now serving as interim director of athletics. Defensive coordinator Randy Shannon will serve as interim head football coach following the departure of Josh Heupel to the University of Tennessee.

UCF will move quickly to hire a director of athletics, whose first job will then be to hire a head football coach. The university anticipates finalizing the selection of a search firm this week to help to identify and recruit the best candidates for director of athletics. The search process will include input from coaches, athletics staff and student-athletes.

“With our two vacancies, we have an opportunity to define the future of UCF Athletics,” President Alex Cartwright said.

“When we had a similar opportunity five years ago, UCF made many hires that quickly elevated the national profile of our athletics programs. I look forward to working with all of our coaches, student-athletes, athletics staff and fans to continue building on our momentum.”

Carr, whom Danny White hired shortly after his arrival, is a 25-year veteran of intercollegiate athletics. During his time at UCF, he has overseen all of UCF Athletics’ external units, including Ticket Sales & Operations, Corporate Partnerships, the Annual Fund, Brand Advancement, Strategic Communications, Video Services and the Gameday Experience. He works closely with UCF’s coaches, including as head sports administrator for men’s basketball, men’s soccer and women’s track and field.

“I am thankful for the outstanding contributions all of our coaches and athletics staff have made to strengthen our athletics program, the success of our student-athletes inside the classroom and in competition, and our university’s national reputation,” Cartwright said. “Scott has been an exceptional leader alongside Danny, and his team has enjoyed great success growing the size and enthusiasm of Knight Nation and UCF’s reputation.”

“I am honored to be appointed by President Cartwright as interim director of athletics at the University of Central Florida,” Carr said. “After five years of meaningful service here, I am grateful to serve at this moment of major opportunity.”

“We are a perennial top-25 program with a very talented team returning for the 2021 season. We have achieved tremendous success in the classroom and in our graduation rates. The future of UCF athletics is very bright with the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, the passion of Knight Nation, our talented staff and coaches, and the leadership of President Cartwright. We are confident that we will find the right head coach to lead our football program.”

Need to keep the torch burning

It seems it's becoming the "law of the west" now. UC hired Deputy AD Anthony Di Fino to cover some of the same areas [e.g., ticket sales, revenue generation, gameday experience] that UCF's interim director did.

Yep, one more Bama assistant leaving. This time it's DB coach Karl Scott heading to the Vikings in the same role. Saban gets players to the NFL and helps assistants off to better jobs. He's a professional recruiting coordinator if there is such a thing.

Arkansas State AD Terry Mohajir headed to UCF apparently. Wonder if Lyle comes with? Gus Malzahn makes sense here as well.

that would be quite ironic - i think i'd look forward to those games a little more than i do now - and ucf is up there on the list already

I guess when you need a whole new team, get the best recruiter you can find?
