As of this year the NAIA is divisionless. All one big happy family :) There were only divisions in basketball but that's now gone.

Many would say Trevecca has not been a success in D2. They're spending a lot more money without anything to show for it. And they are a geographic outlier in their conference, with no better options.

Why would either team leave the Big Sky?
Stability has been the biggest issue with the WAC. However the SLC and BSC are too big. If they can go from a 1:15 chance of NCAA bid vs 1:9 bid.

If the league can get stable and shed the transiate stage, the wac will be better

Big Sky only has 11 for all sports. FB isn't an issue since we always get 3-4 bids to the playoffs.

Only if they go back to West Texas State, East Texas State, and Texas A&I.

What about this naming convention:

West Texas A&M
East Texas A&M
South Texas A&M

Maybe Tarleton St can be North Texas A&M to complete the set.

Tarleton has a state statute in their favor, prohibiting them from changing their name.

West Texas A&M was a compromise to add the A&M name while keeping the West Texas name. If they had their druthers, they'd rather be West Texas State again, though they like connection to A&M.

I have a friend that is an alum of both Commerce and Kingsville, whose father taught at both places. According to him, both of those schools would rather still be East Texas State and Texas A&I.

But yes, North, South, and East Texas A&M is consistent with the naming convention set by West Texas A&M.

I think the long-term question for the WAC is how to re-home Seattle, Cal Baptist, Grand Canyon, Utah Valley, and Dixie State when the WAC has a sufficient Texas-centered cohort for FCS 10-15 years from now. Dixie State could probably sneak into the Big Sky, but the non-football schools may have a problem.

Yeah, I'm sure they're thinking that far out, and that half the members are planning to boot themselves out for the sake of the conference.

2nd that! If only just 1, Texas A&I just sounded so cool when I was young.

Especially after the reminder this year about JUST HOW USEFUL it is to make intricate long term plans based on assuming current conditions will continue indefinitely, and then to bet the bank on those long term plans working out.

One of the guys on Reddit said that the school is a D1 school joining them. The problem is that there is no D1 school that wants to join the WAC because it is a downgrade. The hint is D1. It could also mean a former D1 school as well. West Texas A&M fits the former D1 school.

My thoughts are that they should work towards a 2 divisions of 6 format for basketball:

Seattle, Cal Baptist, UVU, Dixie St, GCU and NMSU in the West and 6 Texas schools in the East. That would be a stable format that could be upped to 7-7 in the future.

The addition of both APU and West Texas would make a ton of sense.

I don't believe APU is in any condition to go D1. Their 2019 incoming class was very small and their bond rating is literally junk. They have a new president who might straighten things out but a lot of damage was done. I think their enrollment will need to recover and their finances improve before they even consider it. Maybe in 5 years? Or 10? Don't even talk about APU going D1 for a while.

I agree. It has to be a school that’s both positioned to make the move and motivated to make the move. I think West Texas A&M checks both boxes better than any other school mentioned in this thread, and I hope the WAC has landed them

I did not know that about NAIA.

As to Trevecca, it seems the move to NCAAD2 has been a success in terms of bolstering enrollment. There were 3,000-plus students at the college in fall 2016. By spring 2020 ...almost 4,000. Obviously, lots of increase can be attributed to things other than sports. But it's worth noting.

Just for easy reference, here's the geographic footprint covered by the current WAC membership:

And that "footprint", more like an octopus tentacles, bespeaks the weakness of the conference.

I doubt that. It would make zero sense for any team to leave the Big Sky for the WAC.

Source? Reasoning? Why would they join a league with a new team just down the road?
