Why, though, does the comparision have to go straight to the SEC, the conference that is normally the #1 conference among all P5 leagues? Why not ask how Boise would do in the Pac-12, or the Big 12, or the ACC? I am certain that Boise would have a few Pac-12 titles under their belts over the past 18 years.

Boise goes 6-6 in the PAC 12 and their recruiting drops off and then they are 4-8 or worse.

A look at actual facts and evidence of past G5->AQ callups paints a much different story:

Utah - 4 T25 finishes in 9 years of PAC play.
TCU - 3 T10 finishes in 8 years of BXII play.
Louisville - 5 years of 8-5 or better in 6 years of ACC play.

We can even go back further:

Cincinnati - 4 T25 finishes in 8 years of Big East play
Louisville - 3 T25 finishes in 8 years of Big East play
USF - 5 years of 8-5 or better in 8 years of Big East play

“Boise goes 6-6 in the PAC 12 and their recruiting drops off and then they are 4-8 or worse” is backed by no evidence by both (a) Boise’s own play and (b) past cases of programs moving from non-AQ to AQ. It’s a naked claim made by someone talking out of their ass.

One thing I have discovered over the years is how privileged and naive fans of P5 schools, particularly the ones whose team has been in that position for decades. I have been following CFB for 35 years. I have seen my Alma mater play a variety of teams in various conferences. I have seen UC okay as an independent, in CUSA, in the Big East and now in the AAC. I live in Ohio and am exposed to Ohio State, Kentucky, and Louisville who are all within 100 miles of me. I know football. This notion that a Boise, UCF, Houston or UC would struggle to get to 6-6 is rubbish. Would these schools beat Clemson or Alabama consistently— no. But they would hold their own with the middle tier consistently. And that is with their current roster makeup- it would not take into account the recruiting bump these schools would have getting a call up and the ability for them retain coaches for more than 3-4 years.

A few years back Purdue came to UC. To a man, UC was bigger, stronger and faster. If you new nothing about CFB and watched that game, you would not have believed that Purdue was the “big boy program” and UC was “mid-major”. We beat them 42-7 and the game was not even that close. That was a Tuberville team, when the program was not even that well coached and disciplined.

Agree fully. Strong G5 programs like Boise — and if hypothetically put in a P5 league — would almost certainly see their recruiting elevate. I seriously doubt Boise would typically go 6-6 in the Pac-12 after a few years of improved recruiting. I see the program as an 8-4 to 9-3-type program in the Pac-12.

If you are going 10-2, 11-1 every year, that helps in recruiting vs. going 6-6. So while they will occassionally get people who wouldn't consider them, they might also lose people in the middle. So its not certain recruiting improves. Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. But their facilities are not going to match the bottom of the Pac, so they will have to find something different to offer (other than blue turf!) in order to continue to have recruiting success.
