Exclamation How many of the top 25 FB programs are G5 or independents?
How many of the top 25 FB programs are G5 or independents?

As of the past two seasons (2018 & 2019), how many of the top 25 FB programs in the U.S. are G5 or independents, as opposed to P5s?

Consider these as possibilities:

Boise St.

App St.

Memphis

UCF

Cincy

Navy

BYU

SDSU

I'm going to take a controversial stand on this...

ONLY Notre Dame belongs in the rankings...period.

The rest of the little "g" and independent programs should not be classified with the Power programs. It is like when people wanted to rank the 1aa/FCS programs with the FBS programs: it's not fair or an apt comparison. The "g" schools are a different level of competition now, whether we want to admit it or not.

I don't think that's controversial at all. Programs aren't measured by just their latest one or two year's performance. Using the latest five years' Sagarin ratings, the highest ranked G5 team is Boise State at #32.

RE: How many of the top 25 FB programs are G5 or independents?
There are no G5 programs that are Top 25 year in and out. BYU is the closest thing to a "top 25-caliber program" given its resources, attendance, history, etc.

A G5 program can often have a Top 25 season (Boise for example). But that does not necessarily make the program a broad-based "Top 25-esque program."

So in terms of frequency of Top 25 seasons ... the Boise program is now likely "Top 25-ish."

In a given year there are typically 3 G5 teams that have a top 25 caliber season/team.

Top 25 programs, probably only one maybe two on average. You've have either Boise or UCF every other year supplemented by 1-2 others (App, Memphis, UC, Navy, BYU).

I'd be too much of a homer to say App State just yet. One top 25 finish (and the first team out in 2018) does not a top 25 program make.

I would put UCF and Boise State in there, and that's it right now.

Programs = 1 (Notre Dame)
Teams - varies year to year. UCF, Houston, Memphis, and Boise have been the recent flavors of the month. It will change.
None of them would qualify as top 25 (or even 35) "programs"

"Power" classification is another discussion. I think the question is more, in an unbiased environment (like if we went back to the computers and took the human element out of rankings), how many independent/G5 programs are among the best 25. Last year that was probably in the 5-10 range. That number makes sense considering they make up about half of the FBS teams, with some adjustment for less resources.

Sagarin had 5
Massey had 8
Congrove had 9
Colley had 9

Name 35 programs better than Boise the last 10 years?

Being a top 25 program and a top 25 team are two entirely different things.

Programs are defined by a multitude of things.....budget, facilities, stadium, attendance, TV audience, schedules, on field success etc., over a period of several years.

A school's team changes very year. Every team is different. A lot of teams can be a top 25 team in any given year, but that does not make them a top 25 program.

Having said that, I agree with those that say there are no G5 top 25 programs.

A program is about much more than results on the field. Every power 5 team except the bottom 4 of each conference has a better program (by my math that's about 41).
Boise's last four coaches have left for Arkansas, Arizona State, Colorado, and Washington. Thus, every power 5 team as good or better than those 4.

So top 25 voters should take stadium, attendance, etc. into consideration when voting for the top 25?

None of those get you championships, it's what losers fall back on to make themselves feel better when a "lower" programs whips you on the field.

In other words, you have to be in a P5 league or Notre Dame in order to be a Top 25 program.

Boise State has finished in the top 25 13 of the past 18 years. They're tops in the country for wins since 2000. That's not just a top 25 team. It's a top 25 program.

How many games would Boise have won if they had been in the SEC those years?

Top 25 voters don't vote on programs, they vote on teams, for a particular week of a particular year. So no, they shouldn't take those into consideration.

Many middle-road P5 teams would finish in the top-25 if they played a MWC or AAC schedule instead of a P5 conference schedule.

They'd have won fewer.

Why, though, does the comparision have to go straight to the SEC, the conference that is normally the #1 conference among all P5 leagues? Why not ask how Boise would do in the Pac-12, or the Big 12, or the ACC? I am certain that Boise would have a few Pac-12 titles under their belts over the past 18 years.

Fine but they voted on them like what was said 13 out 18 years at top 25, does that make Arkansas better cause they have that SEC money to steal a coach. The fact that Boise has had so many coaches go get that P5 money and keep producing is a testament to the program.

Exactly.....they vote on teams and it is top programs that get you championships,
