Mike Pence Comes Out: In Support of Mask Wearing
Proud of him.
Linky
Quote:Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday said that he is now on board with encouraging the public to wear masks after initially punting to local health officials for guidance amid recent spikes in coronavirus cases.
After praising Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s ® efforts to restart the economy last month during a press conference at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Pence acknowledged the surge of coronavirus cases in the state and touted Abbott’s efforts to promote social distancing in light of it.
“When we issued guidelines to open up America again, we laid out a phased re-opening plan,” Pence said. “Texas took that plan and implemented it here in a safe and responsible way.”
Pence added that “there was guidance throughout that applied to all of the phases” which includes practicing good hygiene, hand washing, avoiding face touching and wearing “a mask wherever it’s indicated.”
“Or wherever you’re not able to practice the kind of social distancing that would prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” Pence said. “We would strongly reiterate that today.”
The VP went on to note that “roughly half the state is under local ordinances strongly recommending” mask wearing, before saying that complying with the ordinances is “just a good idea.”
“If your local officials — in consultation with the state — are directing you to wear a mask, we encourage everyone to wear a mask in affected areas,” Pence said. “Where you can’t maintain social distancing, wearing a mask is just a good idea. It will, we know from experience, will slow the spread.”
Pence’s latest remarks strongly recommending mask wearing demonstrates a notable shift within the Trump administration to encourage the practice in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Earlier Sunday, Pence defended Trump’s refusal to encourage Americans to wear masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus by saying during an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that the White House wants “to defer to governors” and local officials. The VP previously shared the same stance during the first briefing in nearly two months from the White House Coronavirus Task Force on Friday.
“One of the elements of the genius of America is the principle of federalism, of state and local control,” Pence told CBS. “We’ve made it clear that we want to defer to governors. We want to defer to local officials, and people should listen to them.”
HHS Secretary Alex Azar also dodged when grilled on whether the President is undercutting the message of his own health officials that masks should be worn in public to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
“I am the President’s health secretary and I am telling people just what President Trump has said from day one in the reopening guidelines,” Azar said. “Social distance, wear facial covering where you can’t practice social distancing, engage in appropriate personal hygiene.”

Agreed.
Starting to not see a lot of difference between the majority of Republicans and Democrats in DC.
Obey, obey

Maybe Trump feels that Americans don't need him to tell them how to do everything in their lives.

Curious (genuinely) if you're going get the vaccine when it (hopefully) emerges. I know you're either anti-vaxx (or hinted at it) but unsure of your stance on post-pubertal development administration of them.

I am not going to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Just like I don't get the flu shot. (Because it doesn't work.)
I will 100% take my chances. I also am pretty sure I already had (and recovered from) COVID-19. I'll likely take the antibody test once they get the accuracy rate up.

This proves that people really have not been listening or paying attention. Very early on... The administration clearly recommended the wearing of masks if one can't social distance from others. I see nothing really here that is a change. I was listening and paying attention. I have been following the early recommendation and carrying a mask with me in case I need it. Ive used it several times in close quarter situations.

Unlike the liberal mindset, this side of the fence welcomes opinions from any angle and does not judge a differing opinion with arrogance, judgement and snobbery.
If you want to wear a freaking mask, knock yourself out, great. Do it.
If you prefer to not wear one, that’s fine too.
The agenda driven liberal nonsense is so freaking out of hand it’s putting the entire nation on the brink of meltdown.
Liberals are truly tearing this country apart.

RE: Mike Pence Comes Out: In Support of Mask Wearing
I get the whole "don't tell me what to do" thing.....
I also believe that the mask is not stopping the spread so much as it is at the very least keeping the **** that comes out of our mouth from flying as far... a suppressant if you will. That is just common sense - right?
That said, isn't it just common courtesy to your fellow man/woman/child to wear a mask if you are in close proximity to people like at the grocery store etc... The Karens of the world can kiss my royal arse when I am outside and can stay away from people, but If i need to go into a store I will wear one.

Why is this considered news?
Also, seems to me like he' specifically hi-lightghting they should be worn in 'affected areas', like hotspots.

Because the MSM makes a big deal out of Trump not wearing a mask. They want to drive a wedge (or at least a perceived wedge) between Trump and Pence.
Simple.

At least 90% of the masks I see people wearing in stores are cloth and they ain't stopping any virus. But no one cares so long as you have SOME kind of mask on. It's about compliance, not safety. Opinions vary, but that's mine.

Now that Nashville is mandating them and I have to go to customer's locations I picked up one of these deals. I was looking for a new hat for yard work and fishing and this was a good deal for that and 3 shields that I don't have to loop around my ears and can put on and off quickly
Any hat and 3 shields for $29.99

RE: Mike Pence Comes Out: In Support of Mask Wearing
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/30...ask-345275
Quote:Fox News’ Steve Doocy implored President Donald Trump on Tuesday to wear a mask in public to model best practices for Americans — echoing Republican leaders and other conservative commentators who have expressed new support for face coverings as Covid-19 cases surge nationwide.
“I think that if the president wore one, it would just set a good example. He’d be a good role model. I don’t see any downside to the president wearing a mask in public,” Doocy said on Tuesday morning’s episode of “Fox & Friends” during an interview with Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee.
Doocy went on to pitch the party chief an updated play on Trump’s signature campaign slogan. “‘MAGA’ should now stand for ‘Masks Are Great Again.’ Let me give you some marketing advice right there,” he told McDaniel.
The appeal from Doocy, whom Trump has reportedly ranked as a 12 on a 1-to-10 loyalty scale of Fox News correspondents, came just hours after another of the network’s stars Sean Hannity offered an endorsement of mask-wearing on his nightly prime-time program.
“I was in the epicenter of this. I went to my grocery store every week. Guess what? They wore masks. Nobody at my grocery store, thank God, got coronavirus,” Hannity, a close ally of the White House and confidant of the president’s, said Monday.
“I think they work,” he continued. “And I said — especially if I wear a mask and it opens up baseball, concerts, NFL football — I’d rather wear the mask and go to the game to protect Grandma, Grandpa, Mom and Dad and watch the ballgame.”
Elected Republicans as senior as Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have urged Americans in recent days to wear masks in public if they are unable to socially distance. But Trump has been reluctant to cover his face in public, even mocking a reporter who wore a mask during a White House news conference last month.
Those latest entreaties by GOP officials and public health experts are in response to spikes in new coronavirus cases across the American South and Southwest, including in the nation’s most populous states: California, Florida and Texas. The U.S. as a whole has similarly registered single-day records in new infections over the past week.
The president, however, has not made any marked effort to encourage mask use amid the precipitous climbs in caseloads, instead continuing to emphasize the need for a broad economic reopening.
