“I think they work,” he continued. “And I said — especially if I wear a mask and it opens up baseball, concerts, NFL football — I’d rather wear the mask and go to the game to protect Grandma, Grandpa, Mom and Dad and watch the ballgame.”

Elected Republicans as senior as Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have urged Americans in recent days to wear masks in public if they are unable to socially distance. But Trump has been reluctant to cover his face in public, even mocking a reporter who wore a mask during a White House news conference last month.

Those latest entreaties by GOP officials and public health experts are in response to spikes in new coronavirus cases across the American South and Southwest, including in the nation’s most populous states: California, Florida and Texas. The U.S. as a whole has similarly registered single-day records in new infections over the past week.

The president, however, has not made any marked effort to encourage mask use amid the precipitous climbs in caseloads, instead continuing to emphasize the need for a broad economic reopening.

“One of the elements of the genius of America is the principle of federalism, of state and local control,” Pence told CBS. “We’ve made it clear that we want to defer to governors. We want to defer to local officials, and people should listen to them.”

HHS Secretary Alex Azar also dodged when grilled on whether the President is undercutting the message of his own health officials that masks should be worn in public to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

“I am the President’s health secretary and I am telling people just what President Trump has said from day one in the reopening guidelines,” Azar said. “Social distance, wear facial covering where you can’t practice social distancing, engage in appropriate personal hygiene.”

This proves that people really have not been listening or paying attention. Very early on... The administration clearly recommended the wearing of masks if one can't social distance from others. I see nothing really here that is a change. I was listening and paying attention. I have been following the early recommendation and carrying a mask with me in case I need it. Ive used it several times in close quarter situations.

Really. This is what they have been saying since they quit trying to discourage mask wearing in order to conserve masks. Same message for last 3 months.
