Yea---Pastner Sucks---what a bad coach .

Let's see if I remember this correctly. Cal jumped ship late and RC and Shirley rolled the dice on a kid who had never coached anyone but an AAU team for a couple of years. Little over a year after we had played for a Natty !!! We hired an F'n kid to coach our basketball team !!! And to this day we are still shocked it didn't work out well.
Now that's some funny sheet !!! 07-coffee3
And actually ... The kid did pretty good ... CONSIDERING HE HAD NO BUSINESS BEING A HEAD BASKETBALL COACH FOR OUR MEMPHIS TIGERS !! Thanks Coach Pastner ... You did OK 07-coffee3

Pastner sucks. He recruited well to get the Tournament teams that he had but that's about the best I can say about his skills as a HC.

Also the last time he achieved anything (anything aside from swindling Georgia Tech into a very bad hire) was 2014.

Even if he was a bad coach who underachieved, he still went to the tournament his 2nd year, 4 years in a row, won 2 games; and the year he didn't, his RPI was 56. So for all the criticism; much of it warranted, the bottom line is that his first 5 years weren't bad at all. They stand up against Cal, Tubby and Penny so far.

2014 was the killer. If Black stays or Pellom isn't injured, we are a Sweet 16 team. After that it was over.

2014 was also on of the toughest conferences seasons in program history. Louisville were defending champs with most of the the team back, UCONN were on their way to winning the national title that season, Cincinnati was a top 15 team and SMU were the NIT runner up.

It did hurt the team bad that Black did not come back for his Sr season with JJ and Crawford. It would have been a much stronger front line.

The conference was just loaded at the top with some of the most elite guarda in the country.

I don't think you have to be a teacher to be a coach anymore.

I can see it....he gets a chance to coach his boys officially. I think many fathers would take that if they could.

It appears you don't have to have a degree:

Coaching Requirements
Article I, Section 9 of the TSSAA Bylaws states the following:

All coaches must be registered with TSSAA annually and will fall under one of the following categories:

Full-time certified teacher (a minimum of 100 school days) of a board of education with a Tennessee teaching license or the equivalent.
Retired educator (five or more years' experience) with a valid Tennessee state teaching license or the equivalent.
Non-faculty coach – Anyone approved by the principal, superintendent, and/or local board of education in the normal course of employment procedures in accordance with applicable state law.
Classified Employee – Any individual employed by a member school or school system in a position that does not require a teaching license or the equivalent. A Classified Employee must be employed 30 hours or more per week in a non-coaching position and may not be an independent contractor or an employee of an independent contractor.

Mike is going to coach them this season, Mason's senior season and he is done. Scott Cherry will take over after that.

Reading thru the list, I suppose he's a "non-faculty" or "classified employee" where it appears the only qualification is they want you to have the job..... assuming he doesn't yet have his degree. But good for him & son & it will get him some HC experience.

Yep...

A little High School experience and he will be ready to be a D1 head coach.

This move makes one wonder if that’s what he wants. Could be two years of the grind was enough for him. Or could be he feels no one could develop Mason for a career in basketball like he could, and he’s in no rush to do anything else. Or could be he and Mason will be a package deal for his next job. I guess we’ll find out.

Doubt he ever becomes a D1 head coach. Not sure he wants to put in the work anymore. Agent sounds more like it.
