RE: Mike Miller: Boom Out of Here
Penny will be OK. He lost on Moore and maybe Cisse (it was not because of lack of effort or being outworked), but he did not go after Matthews and Murrell (hard) because he thought he had something and someone better (he had Green, but G League throw a monkey wretch into that plan and we can understand why he let Murrell walk to go after Green). Chandler has made it known that he wanted to go to Duke and that has been his dream school all along. Once Duke began to recruit him hard it means that you are probably wasting your time, energy, and money by putting a lot effort in recruiting him. In the worst case scenario, where no transfers get waivers or Cisse sign, then we still have a talented freshmen class with experience that will now be sophomores to mix with some solid juniors. No we will not be elite or have a super star player (maybe DJ or Boogie can reach it), but we will have a solid core of players whose games should improve. This will be a critical year for Penny true, but that does not sound like a team or coach with the wheels falling off.

I think this is the proper way to view it. +3

Mike Miller: Boom Out of Here
I love my family, but after 2+ months of COVID quarantine, I question anyone who says they are quitting to be around their family more. Lol.
Anyways, good luck Mike in your future endeavors!

Concerning at this point.
Still better than where we were with Tubby and Josh. Team still has a roster loaded with 4 stars. How many did we have before Penny was hired? He is still able to get the top recruits, not his fault the college landscape has now changed with the GL recruiting his guys. Assistants come n go all the time, time to bring in new blood.
Josh ? Josh ?....um is that the guy that took us to our last 2 tournaments ? Is that the guy ? If that is whom you speak of ---correct me if i'm wrong --but I don't believe we have been back since !!
Pastner did not get fired. He found another job and took it.

I don’t remember either. He was offered an awesome job and $$$$ from a lazy AD and took it. He wasn’t ready, but why turn that down? Water under the bridge and I wish him the best. He gave his all.
We went from the hardest worker in CBB----one that couldn't sleep or eat and got physically ill after a loss-------to the laziest coach in CBB--that told us to basically get used to losing----that told us the old MEMPHIS was gone. Heck after his tenure coupled with the last two years he may have been right,,,.....but I think Penny turns it around----signing Cisse would be a giant step in righting the ship----and stops the march madness drought this year.
Penny is trying to turn this thing around? Yes. But losing Mike as his wingman basically hurts way more than what people typically think. Don't think we're getting Cisse either.
Regardless, this team plays 4 SEC teams. All 4 are away from FedEx Forum (a stat that Penny is under .500 at). Lets face it, there are going to be more Tennessee fans in the game in Nashville than Memphis fans. Same goes for the game against Atlanta when we play a good Auburn team. Ole Miss is getting better. Georgia, a team we lost to last year, now welcomes us in Athens. If we go 1-3 against those teams, you can forget about the NCAA tournament. Simply because the AAC will not be as good in 20-21 as they were in 19-20.
If we go 1-3 against those 4 teams we don't deserve to go to the tourney.
UGA will not be a tourney team
Ole Miss will not be a tourney team
UT is up in the air...I will give them a bubble team
Only team that looks good in the pre-Season is auburn.
That's why I'm referring to that. Those 4 games will determine whether if Memphis makes the tournament or not, just facts to me. We don't have the conference to go 3 games over .500 and get in the tournament. We just don't. We can't lose 8 conference games that we did this past year.
Playing Ole Miss, Tennessee, Auburn, and Georgia all away from FedEx Forum, will determine the fate of this team. Basically, playing those games will determine whether if we make the NCAA Tournament, before the conference schedule begins. 30-31 game season that will be determined by 4 games.

Frankly, there were only 2 games last year where we did not have an opportunity to win the game in the last minute--Oregon and Tulsa. I think a more mature team, even without Precious will be in position to win all our games. Auburn, as an elite, experienced team the likely exception.

I know he didn't get fired-----and the last 4 trnys and last 2 trny victory's Josh was the coach...and yet 90% of people on this board say Josh sucks.....and we havent been to the trny since. If our 2 transfers don't get waivers granted and we lose Cisse---I am afraid Penny misses in his first 3 seasons.

He does suck. Look at where the program was when he took it over and look at where it was when he left.
Love him all you want to. Your choice but Pastner is an average coach. Not terrible but not good. (Better than the version of Tubby we got though)
The program is back to about the point where it was when Cal took it over and it took him 5 years to really sort it out.
Pastner should have been cut loose after our first season in the AAC (last NCAA performance). Instead we got 2 more years of him, then 2 years of Tubby and now 2 years of Penny.
This time last year it appeared we were flying high but it fell apart.
I don't disagree with you that if none of Nolley, Williams, or Cisse plays for the Tigers next season (if there is one) that we are iffy to make the big dance.
But Pastner was too youug for the job when he got it and basically wrecked daddy's Ferrari.
Can Penny fix it? We'll get a clue this year and (i think) know for sure the year after.

I'll toss Wes Miller from UNC Greensboro into the mix.
Looks like a strong coach and a aggressive alter ego for Penny on the bench.

The same reason Penny would not have come here as an assistant.
