The Xi Jinpooh Chronicles: Communism's Last Stand
Things seem to really be picking up steam on the China front so this is my compilation thread to keep dumping stuff.

Quote:Britain wants US to form a 10-nation 5G alliance to cut reliance on China’s Huawei

Proposed ‘D10’ club of democratic partners would include Australia, South Korea and India

Issue is expected to feature at a G7 summit that Donald Trump will host next month

UK extends full citizenship to over 300,000 people in Hong Kong as a response to China passing a national security policy for Hong Kong:

RE: The Xi Jinpooh Chronicles: Communism's Last Stand
After 1949, the UK really should’ve begun making arrangements to transfer (in 1997) Hong Kong to the authorities in Formosa, rather than the authorities in Beijing. Britain was strong enough at the time to have imposed that solution, regardless of complaints from Mao.

It is a shame what is happening now.

I’ll point out that the proposed “5G alliance” from Britain sounds similar to the Commonwealth alliance suggested from time to time by Owl on this forum.

This was a big difference between Hong Kong and Macau. The Brits did not originally offer citizenship to non-Europeans in HK. Many of them bailed out to Vancouver, in order to keep Commonwealth residency and obtain Commonwealth citizenship.

Macau went over to China a year later. The day of transition, Portugal issued something like 400,000 Portuguese passports to Macau residents, according to our tour guide when we visited. That may--or may not, explain why things do not seem to have gone down with the same level of oppression there.

Back in the Vietnam era, HK was one of our R&R ports. As we came through the entry channel, we would get challenged by the Chinese. Our response was always, "We are in international waters." Nothing ever happened, it was more of a standard operating procedure.

We were not allowed to go to Macau, it was off limits because of a feeling that the Portuguese were too chummy with the ChiComs.

I remember watching the UK China ceremony in school during history class.

My teacher made a point to mention that China was communist when we asked why this was such a big deal.

He was right

I don't hold my hope that the Chicoms will let those people leave the mainland to the UK. Especially if some of them are computer whizzes.

Hong Kong depending on the "New Territories" which were not part of the perpetual lease. So that would have left Hong Kong non-viable. The British really had no choice for keeping it. Taiwan could not have held it.

I'd argue NK is more facist dictatorship than communist too.

Cuba is probably the best example of communism as the govt owns you. Before Trump was elected Cuba's biggest export was the sevices of their doctors. The govt would arrange for their doctors to work in places like Venezuela and take a large cut of the payout

RE: The Xi Jinpooh Chronicles: Communism's Last Stand
Quote:A funny thing has been happening on YouTube. For some reason, certain combinations of Chinese characters have been immediately removed from the platform within a few short seconds. No warning or reason would be given to the Mandarin-speaking moderatees. And it's not like they had been foul or freaky in a foreign tongue. The Hanzi Which Shall Not Be Named were merely 共匪 ("communist bandit") and 五毛 ("fifty cents").

Huh? Why in the world would YouTube want to immediately take down those particular phrases? Well, according to YouTube, they didn't. It's an algorithmic mistake, you see. The company told The Verge that upon review, they discovered this odd insta-deleting was indeed an "error in [their] enforcement systems" that is currently being patched.

How strange that this automated fluke would tend towards the direction of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) preferences. These terms might seem random to Westerners, but they carry significant political weight in China.

It's not nice to call someone a bandit, whether they are a communist or not. But in the Chinese context, the term 共匪 has a very particular meaning: it was used by Nationalist partisans led by the Republic of China's Chiang Kai-shek against the People's Republic of China's Mao Zedong and the reds. Today, it is considered a slur against the CCP and its patriotic supporters.

五毛 is a cleverer anti-CCP troll. It's basically calling a pro-CCP commenter a paid shill, albeit a cheap one. The joke is that human CCP NPCs get paid fifty cents for each pro-CCP post; ergo, the "fifty-cent army" or 五毛党.

Quote:US-China row moves underwater in cable tangle

An underwater data cable, linking the US to Hong Kong, looks set to be rejected by the US government because of fears of Chinese data theft.

The Pacific Light Cable Network, backed by Google and Facebook, is designed to boost internet speed and capacity.

But a US government committee known as "Team Telecom" has now recommended that the US denies it approval.

The decision is another sign of the growing tension between the US and China, who are in a trade war.

It would reportedly be the first such cable rejected by the US on national security grounds.

China-India border dispute goes hot with first active combat casualties since the mid 70's:

Quote: Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian

That is the same prick that was Ambassador to Pakistan tweeting that COVID was released by the US Army in Wuhan. He's now been promoted to foreign ministry. Now we know what it takes to rise through the ranks in the CCP.
