Only a $10,000 raise and no connections to the Carolinas...she clearly wanted to get off the ship.

RE: Gaber Leaving UT
People liked her, she did help graduation and retention rate, but the plan to raise enrollment was a failure. Her actions regarding UTMC were disappointing. There were many BOT meetings about UTMC where there was no information given, including one where she told a Blade reporter while leaving that she couldn't talk because she had to make a phone call (???).
Not getting a capital campaign up and running immediately, and then having BG announce and finish theirs, was a huge mistake.
When the physician assistant program was put on probation, no upper level administrator was held responsible. That includes the dean of the COM who had the ultimate responsibility.
Forget any new baseball or softball facilities.

Seems like horrible timing for a president to be leaving a University. Where does her abandonment leave UT?? The hiring team better hit a home run with the new president. I actually liked Gaber, this is really unfortunate news. Does this mean the 10-year plan is completely thrown out the window? Not that I've seen any progress on it, but just wondering what's going to happen next....

We can do better. I’m glad she came but it’s also time for her to move on. Her effectiveness had culminated. A new president will better serve our community during these difficult times. UT needs a new face to drive a capital campaign.
I have no worries about losing her.
I wish her God speed

It wasn't surprising, and they've probably been prepared for awhile, as she had interviewed for quite a few jobs in the last year and was a finalist for two (Ole Miss and another that escapes me at the moment). To those in the know, it was clear that she wanted to head south, and I'm assuming you'll see an interim named rather quickly since many pieces were already prepared for this.
As the Master Plan is typically developed and overseen by the sitting President, I would assume once another is brought on, another Master Plan will be developed. To the comment about baseball and softball, I think this will more than likely seal their fate. Athletics is likely staring down the barrel of an 18-20% cut in the next few days...and cutting two sports with heavy scholarship draws, very little history, and nowhere to play will be far easier.
As for UTMC...there really isn't much more that could've been done. The hospital runs a $300M+ budget, roughly the same as the academic arm of the entire University. There is no reason to continue managing that facility, and for all of the dummies out there who might be reading this (I know there are no people on here who don't already understand this), getting rid of UTMC will not affect the College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, or College of Nursing at all. They will still function normally...or as normally as possible once the cut to Academic Affairs is approved (hearing anywhere from 10%-20%, but many sources seem to be locked in on 13%).

Thanks for the background information. I still want to know where the $50 million per year from Promedica is going. UTMC was subsidizing the COM to the tune of $25M a year which was killing the Budget. Why wasn't $25M of the 50 used to make UTMC whole again?
If the hospital is shut down, what happens to the 80% empty campus? Do you knock that part down costing millions. The COM will move to the Promedica campus, which I'm sure was already planned. So you have nursing, pharmacy, the physician assistant program and research on a giant piece of ground.

Gaber came to Toledo hoping it would not be her last stop. I am not sorry to see her go. It definitely is a difficult time for a transition, but I agree with Bearcat that the board of trustees should already have some ideas for an interim president.

President Gaber was not finalist for Ole Miss, the search firm put her on short list, contacted her but she declined to be considered.

RE: Gaber Leaving UT
The timing is not ideal, but it was clear from day one that she would be here no longer than 5 years (which is the average length of a university president these days), no one at UT is surprised she is moving on to next challenge. She was a great hire and UT made huge improvements last 4 years, the ProMedica agreement was a huge game changer for the College of Medicine, Nursing and other medical sciences. State funding, enrollment challenges are the norm in Ohio and many other places, not unique to UT. To think she alone could fix all of these is unfair, in my view she did the best possible with the hand she was dealt (BOT was not completely forthcoming with her during interview processes regarding the financial challenges that existed in 2016).
With a national search UT should be aiming again to bring in a new leader with experience and expertise, but it is pretty naive to think that with her departure and a new President that the challenges (especially budget and UTMC) are doing to be any easier for the next person to fix, especially when they arrive in 2021 and see what is left standing in terms of staffing, revenues etc... after FY21 and the impacts from coronavirus.
And one quick look at UNCC clearly shows (even with the challenges they also face from coronavirus), it is a much sound and stable institution with great potential for future growth, and provides her a springboard (at age 56) to jump to a major institution or system in next 4-5 years as that has always clearly been her ambition. Personally I wish her well.

None of the funds from the Promedica agreement was ever intended to support UTMC, you can read the agreement and also access the publicly available audited financials for UT and UTMC if you are interested in tracking the money.

The $50M per year was to enhance the COM. Don't see why the hospital wouldn't be off the hook if there was another revenue stream.
UT is the loser all around with the academic affiliation. A new college of medicine building will be built on the Promedica campus. And the "money" each year will just be used to enhance the Promedica campus (housing, new neurosciences building etc.) with a UT logo on it, but that's about all. Med students will probably set foot on the main campus twice in their careers.
Even some of the newer medical schools (CMU/Oakland) built a college of medicine building ON their campus. I haven't seen anything the college of medicine has done for UT. Certainly not more prestige and the accompanying increase in enrollment. It turned out to be a sham.

Is this a shock to anyone? Who cares. Let her go. College Presidents are just like College FB and BB coaches. They go where the money is. I guarantee you that in five years, she will not be at UNCC. Shoot I'll take the job. Where do I sign up?
