I’ve heard NBA analysts say that Ball may get the #1 due to the NBA turning into small ball and him having a year of decent pro experience.

Anthony Edwards was projected but he had an erratic year on an average team. Scouts have seen plenty of JW. He will have extensive workouts for a handful of teams that might draft him.

In his short tenure here he played hard, showed his athleticism, showed his versatility, has a body that can and I suspect has picked up weight and strength. In the end, how James left matters to us but scouts will look at potential and what he shows on the court. He doesn’t have a flakey rep or a trouble-maker rep or a ego rep.

Frankly I would say it would be harder to get up every day and spend a regimented schedule solely focusing on getting ready for his pro career. Do that right and any doubts fall away.

The NBA is full of head cases and they still draw their checks. James isn’t damaged goods.

I just listened to NBA Draft Insider Chad Ford on yesterday's J&J show. Ford says he's talked to many scouts and there's not a lot of question now about James quitting. This attitude seems to have changed over the past month. But they do have questions about how he's playing, since they only saw 3 games in the past year.

He said the biggest thing determining where James goes is who is drafting in which slot. He pretty much thinks James will be top 3.

One note that he makes is that Ball has really helped himself over the past year, whereas James has not.

If James goes top 3 not playing definitely didn't hurt his draft. There is no clear #1 and the #1 will be picked based on the teams need.

Could James have made himself the clear #1 by playing...Possibly. But Money wise he really hasn't hurt himself.

There is a pretty significant money difference over a rookie contract between the top picks https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2019/07/rook...picks.html

Could possibly cost him 10+ million over the contract from just dropping from # 1 to # 3 We don't know until we see where he gets drafted

But where he gets drafted is going to be driven by the team that is there...Unless he just had a Zion like year. Teams are going to draft on need.

I truly believe had he played he would be the #1 pick regardless of who picks first.

Bull.

Pretty much every NBA analyst out there has said that James quitting has brought back the questions about how much he loves the game. How are you just discrediting everything 87 just said and still use the same sources? You both stated something “analysts say” yet you plainly ignore everything he said and replaced it with your own speculation.

Discrediting? No, just debating an issue. Friendly as far as I can tell and intend.

You can now rest peacefully

True but you would have to be the clear number 1 and drop to #3. Too many variables with no complications to ever know if, how much or even which direction will it impact JW.

2019-2020 NBA Rookie Scale
Pick 1st Year Salary 2nd Year Salary
1 $8,131,200 $8,537,900
2 $7,275,200 $7,639,000
3 $6,533,300 $6,859,800
4 $5,890,300 $6,185,000

Coming out of HS James was maybe the top pick but certainly a top 5 pick. None of that has changed. He is still maybe a top pick, likely a top 2-3 pick and certainly a top top 5 pick.

The only thing that will end all of the speculation is draft night.

James was pretty much the consensus number 1 pick in the NBA draft until he quit. Of course its dependent on who gets the ping pong balls but it appears James has likely dropped 3-4 spots in the draft as a result of that decision. Each slot is essentially a 2 million dollar per year loss.

Quitting certainly hasn't helped his marketability. He seems like a great young man but he has very likely lost some endorsement income.

I think some of these questions that have been brought up about him may (or maybe not) follow him beyond this draft class and into his second contract. If so, its going to cost him even more money.

I think James is going to do well, and make lots of money, but it was still very short sighted of him to quit. Its not a stretch to say that his quitting may have cost him upwards 10-15 million.

Not to mention the real money source of endorsement deals. The farther down the list one drops the less lucrative those deals become.
