Would the "Right to try act" come into play with patients that are on their last breath? I know the act says Phase 1 testing must be completed, but what about an existing drug, just meant for a different reason?

If I'm on my death bed with no hope, could I demand this treatment? I scanned some of the verbage, but didn't really get a definitive answer.

Or should I just resort to my fish tank chemical's, lol.

If I'm a doc and you're dying of CV-19 and it were not approved, I'm going to diagnose you with malaria or lupus or RA so I can give it to you. I would see that as my Hippocratic duty.

Somewhat off topic, but related to some of the posts here:

My wife took a thalidomide analog on and off for several years as a maintenance therapy for her cancer. I found it interesting that this drug that was discovered in the 1950s, was essentially repurposed 50 years later, all for the low low price of $20k per month... My wife would swallow a $1,000 pill every night. I know there are extreme costs in bringing a drug to market, but...

Anyhow, one of the side effects were significant painful muscle cramps. Think Charlie horses that hit and lock up your ribs, neck, diaphragm, back, calves, thighs, hands, etc randomly throughout the day and night. So one of the treatments recommended by wife's doctor was to drink tonic water, for the quinine! According to the doctor, there was anecdotal evidence from other patients that it helped. Indeed it did help reduce (but not eliminate) the number of cramps.

I'm all in favor of finding treatments that work right now. NY Times reported last week that researchers have identified almost 70 drugs that might help fight coronavirus, with studies already underway on two dozen of the drugs.

There are also patients being treated with antibodies from recovered patients in Houston and NYC. Likely being used in many other places too, as FDA just gave emergency approval to the "experimental" treatment over the weekend. Here's the rub though...
They can still make a drug that is both (or all three or whatever works best) medications in one pill and expedite the approval because the drugs are known... (can't just stamp it though as there could be 'combination' complications and/or they add a buffer or whatever... new patent... lower cost to produce than a new drug, premium charge for those who don't want to take two pills or have trouble cutting pills or whatever.

I suspect they are, but the issue is they don't want to do it prophylactically and cause a run on the drugs for people who don't really NEED it and are just scared.
