RE: OT- Corona Virus- Where do we go from here?
As discouraged as I may be over the cruelty of our contrived, selfish, politics-first national response to this virus, I do take heart in reading the efforts of those who are doing what they can for their kids - - our nation's future - - under unnecessarily difficult circumstances.
mturn, 12th, Ever, bit9 and so many others on this forum: all of you truly have my utmost respect. As self-pitying as I know I have been in my countless posts on this thread, I do realize that at the end of the day for me it is only money. You guys, and so many others like you, are dealing with much more important issues. And I know that you are doing it superbly.

(09-24-2020 08:31 PM)bit_9 Wrote: My kid is struggling with the remote work and we're doing what we can. I can't sit with him for 6 hours straight a day. I'm home all day but I'm working remotely running a 400 person firm IT department and we went from 9 offices to 400 in March. While I am home and help as much as I can with the 3 month old and try and play friends with the 3 year old periodically during the day, my focus is spread between the 3 kids and 400 people who need their technology to work or we all lose our jobs. Getting up during meetings to help him understand something during class while my wife's changing the diaper or the 3 year old is screaming because she's bored and doesn't understand why she's so bored because we have done next to nothing in 6 months. And expecting the 8 year old to sit and focus with all that going on. And then sitting down after everyone is asleep to finally catch up on emails and knock things out until late at night. It's taken it's mental toll on us all. We REALLY locked down as a family in March while my wife was pregnant. Like total social isolation until July or so. We're an extremely social family so that was really tough. But, about August we finally started creeping out. The kids really struggled with all of that. The daughter next door and mine are like little bff's and they'd be at the fence and us parents literally pulling the girls away from each other because they wanted to play but their parents still had to go to work and me and my wife were staying home. The crying, I just want to play! And now recently we're comfortable with them playing and it was weird for them at first, you could tell. Thankfully she's 3 and won't really remember. Anyway I'm rambling now.
I appreciate people not responding to each others opinions in this thread with "you heartless monster!", or vice versa over the last few weeks. It's been a good thread to follow along.
Yeah, having a pregnant wife/newborn may have changed our approach. Ours are 2, 4, and 11. We never really locked down. We are a healthy family and it was pretty clear from the get go nobody was likely at much risk. Other than the fact that he now hates school, my 11 year old has literally had the time of his life. Many of the neighborhood kids with parents of similar mindset organized into the "COVID crew" later renamed the "Pepper Gang" (still not sure I understand where that came from) and have been basically roaming around free range 1980s style since the very beginning and developed some really deep bonds. They have often included the 4 year old and we let her roam with them, but several of the younger kids have since moved away (military) so now she is starting to get bored (thank God preschool is open and she was born in October so we didn't have to start kindergarten like this). The older kids have taken up skateboarding and there are about 8-10 6th graders in their crew. The most stressful part is neighbors complaining on Facebook about kids being outside (especially back in March/April) and they have had the cops called on them 3 times: once for hanging out at the beach, once for not social distancing, and once for skateboarding at the school... and my wife in particular gets extreme anxiety over that kind of stuff and now I am under pressure to get us out of here and move to the country, which I don't want to do until the kids are much older. As far as the school thing goes, it sucks. My son will have another marking period of straight As while learning nothing, but I have no regrets letting them break the "rules" and build that social network and bonds because as bad as school sucks, I can pretty much guarantee we'd be dealing with depression on top of everything else if we took a panic approach. Can see it in several of the kids who missed out on the Pepper Gang that used to come around and are still not allowed out... one for the same reason as you... newborn baby... and a couple because orange man bad. Totally understandable; I don't envy your position.

RE: OT- Corona Virus- Where do we go from here?
Ya, after the baby was born and had a month to be home and get get some shots and make sure she was healthy we started letting the 8 year old roam around on his bike with others in the neighborhood who also had been practicing social distancing. They weren't allowed in each others houses or on trampolines but they could ride their bikes wherever and play baseball and such in the field down the street. We're pretty close to being back to normal now. The kids in the neighborhood are playing like that did pre-covid at this point. We wear our masks when in public places. Wash our hands a lot. Minus the masks I think the rest are great habits to have - washing your hands frequently, etc. Everyone should be doing that anyway.
I remember taking the kids for a bike ride back in like June at the peak of things and this one side of the neighborhood must have had a little covid crew like you. There was like 10 familes in a cul de sac with like 15 kids all playing and having a grand ol time. When we rode through it was like a movie. "Who are these outsiders. Why are they here? Stay away. This is our isolation area!" =] We didn't have that on our street.

So apparently Northam and his wife have the virus.
Syria has come out and said 61 physicians have died over the past few days after claiming earlier that it only had 60 deaths total.
Israel is having a bad go of it now and they are increasing restrictions.

Kids and college age kids are likely fine. What if they were to spread to others?
The US already has some teachers and staff die from Covid-19. Glad kids haven't been as affected (at least in the short-term), but I'm sure that's still no solace to the parents whose children have died.
Of course it's tough to track down where they go it from, but that's why states need help from the Fed for better resources for contact tracing. That's been another of the long list of failures during the pandemic.
Anyways, I'll support politicians which keep schools shut down. I'd rather we not open hundreds of facilities where a deadly pathogen can stew and spread back into the community. Possible death or long-term health complications isn't a risk teachers signed up for and unless we want to pay them significantly more in hazard-pay, keep them teaching from a computer.
Do you understand that mental issues that kids are experiencing? It is real. It is a BIG problem.
This seems to be grasping at straws.

The hospital admitted 29 children last month after they attempted suicide. For the year, the hospital said it has seen 192 of these patients, which is more than double the number they admitted during the same period five years ago.
An apt comparison would be what the number has been in each of the last 5 years, not how it compares today to 5 years ago.
And are there any other factors. Correlation does not imply cuasation.

We are amused.
Now we are NEVER going to see restrictions removed.
On the bright side, we now know that klan masks are not effective.

Very uncalled for
Whether you like a person or not, no one wants to catch this virus. I know two who have died as a direct result and two others who spent more than a month in the hospital

Wearing a klan mask... the absolute most uncalled for. Calling someone out for wearing a klan mask... very much called for.

mturn’s take is the blackface is fair game but making light of anyone getting sick is a low blow. however I am also being completely hypocritical as if Drumpf caught the rona I would almost certainly feel some schadenfruede. So I’ll just wish them a full recovery and bow out. Make sure y’all wear a mask if you’re heading to the VB boardwalk though.

My nephew is an ED doctor in NC who has shared heart breaking stories re: COVID deaths. The most recent: a married couple where both ended up in comas. Only one survived. The surviving spouse had to be informed her partner didn’t make it.

I believe its a recent exposure (2-3 days) so hopefully hes able to get through it.
