OT- Corona Virus- Where do we go from here? - Gilesfan - 03-12-2020 02:39 PM

Im not panicking but there are plenty of people on here that know more about this than I do. Where are we going in the next 4-5 days? Or is it a matter of 1-2 days? Much of my time is out meeting with clients but I have given my employees the opportunity to work from home. They do not have to show up until the pandemic is over.

Are we avoiding any crowds at all? Avoiding restaurants? Globetrotters and every large event is cancelled. Schools will probably be coming up soon (that creates a whole can of worms) What say you?

FWIW, I do think my family and kids are in the low risk category. I also don't want to have to be quarantined for 2 weeks nor do I want to unknowingly spread the virus to others.

I'm not changing anything. Looking forward to a margarita and some Mexican food tonight.

Take caution for sure, but we're talking about a flu virus (or which we've has far worse) with a fatality rate of 1% that has literally stopped the earth on it's axis. No need for all of the canceled events, etc. Live life and take precautions.

People act like this is the black plague or something. Panic is way overblown.

I put a lot into my Roth this week. It's also a good time to buy Apple and Micron Stock. You'll never find it cheaper.

The numbers are more like 3% fatality rate (and mostly elderly/pre existing conditions) but I do think there are a lot of cases that are unknown that will push that number lower.

It is much worse than a typical flu.

Having said that I don't know the answer. I actually agree with shutting things down (wish they would have played in empty arenas), we are behind the 8 ball and it is going to spread very rapidly.

But, I'm not sure how far we take the precautions.

Celebrating my daughters 1st year of life on Saturday as she is a Pie Baby.

If the older grandparents cant make it, I understand but we're celebrating baby girl.

My employer has not told us we can work from home but they did go around and see who had capabilities of working from home and most of us do.

We'll see.

The annual garden variety has a kill rate of.1% This is predicted to have a kill rate of 1%. Just like earthquakes, each point is a magnitude higher. So, corona virus is 10x deadlier than ordinary flu and far more contagious.

Some people need to think about all the elderly and others who have diabetes and autoimmune issues.

My Dad is 93 and has had pneumonia several times. No way he survives corona and I damn sure aint gonna be the one to give it to him.

My thoughts are:

1) Do not panic

2) Do take it seriously

3) 1% fatality rate would make it 10x more deadly than the flu, and right now working with confirmed cases (cause anything else is speculation) it can more than 3x more deadly than that.

4) This is a virus which seems like it can infect people incredibly quickly and can cause severe respiratory issues. One of the reason's why you're seeing such a dramatic response is that if we can control the rate of infection we can prevent our healthcare system from becoming overworked and prevent people from dying unnecessarily (either from coronavirus or from lack of access to healthcare to address other issues due to the medical bandwidth being consumed by the coronavirus).

5) While yes, you might be not suffer too terribly from this disease, please do think of the elderly and higher risk people when making potentially rash decisions. There's been this disturbing attitude that since it seems like mostly those people are the ones that will die that there's nothing to worry about. Which is all fine and dandy until it's your parent that won't be able to see their grandkid graduate or your friend in an immunocompromised position that dies cause people thought that them dying is nothing to worry about.

Well if your team is going to suck and miss out on the postseason, this is the year to have it happen.

This is a good stress test of our country. I always see the positive and for such a mild contagion, relative to something like the black plague, this is a good wake up call. There are a lot of firms that haven't been working towards work place flexibility and mobility and they're going to get hit the hardest when an entire branch or region cant have butts in seats.

RE: OT- Corona Virus- Where do we go from here? - odu09 - 03-13-2020 07:02 AM

In my opinion, the biggest concern is overwhelming the healthcare infrastructure. So this is why all the major events are being canceled. It's to "flatted the curve" so to speak, of infected cases.

The amount of confirmed cases is very, very low compared to what I believe it actually is for two reasons:

(1): The limited tests available means doctors are only testing those who have recently traveled out of the country, or have been in close contact with someone who is a confirmed case.

(2): Limit the amount of public panic. As you can see from pictures of Costco lines, we Americans do not handle bad news so well, and even with only a few confirmed cases, people start hoarding like crazy. Imagine what those lines would be like if the confirmed cases were 3x the amount? My advice is to have enough stock on hand to last you 2 weeks, but I think official guidance is suggesting a month. You don't have to get it all at once...

The other thing I want to point out is this virus tends to have an incubation period of 5-10 days, which means an infected person doesn't show symptoms for that long, but can spread it during that time. I think we will find out pretty soon just how bad it has spread. Many people could be infected right now and not know it. So it's just good to be prepared.

Lastly, this is the first "big" virus (I'm not counting zika) during the social media age, which means there is a LOT of misinformation that is easily spread. Check the CDC's website (cdc.gov) for official facts. It will be slower than twitter, but it will be factual.

Am I crazy that Im somewhat surprised the. Umbers are still relatively low? I was expecting more at this point but I think the next 5-10 days will tell a lot.

I realized these closures had to happen when Italy did not take preventative measures and got slammed. Meanwhile, I think it was South Korea that did and they have kept the numbers down.

You want to know why the numbers are so low, look at how many tests the CDC have actually been reviewed. It was only like 7k yesterday.

My answer is in bullet (1) in my first post

RE: OT- Corona Virus- Where do we go from here? - VB Monarch - 03-13-2020 07:35 AM

The numbers may be low due to lack of testing. We all know why.
