Houston: In recent podcast interviewer ask sampson how good our top 4 guards. sampson goes out of his way to say tramon mark is in that group..says tramon could be better than all of them after a few seasons..says dejon who was never a great shooter but passable as a soph , broke his hand last offseason and didnt return till the season had started and was not confident to shoot it without reps..say he should atleast return to passable with an offseason shooting

Yep - rave reviews for Mike Saunders so far. He's probably the most athletic lead guard in the conference the moment he steps on the court, but really needs to work on his jumpshot. It's great that UC has DeJulius and won't rely on Saunders but I think he fits right into Brannen's uptempo, 94 foot system.
Saunders is super fast. I hope that he is as effective as GAlen whats his name for Houston a few years ago.

I hope he's better than Galen Robinson...

I liked Galen Robinson - definitely a good player on Houston teams that won a ton of games. But he never made an all-league team.

UC doesn't recruit their point guard of the future if they don't think he can be an all-league guy in the 7th best conference....

defensive guards never get credit ..high assist players (not accompanied with scoring aswell) never get credit...

this was the point i was making with keith williams in the POY debate we had.. i said to me kieth williams is the best guard defender in the league...but that has little value in awards

sampson has called galen the foundation, every point guard we recruit is toldd they are being compared to galen

was a top 100 4star when he committed and made these comments (his rating have since come down thou)

Justin Jenifer is one of the winningest players in UC history. It would be a disappointment if Saunders isn't better.

That says more about Houston’s weak history than it does Galen.

Galen was good. A winning player. An elite role player you could say. But he worked well for Houston because they had better scorers around him.

If I had to build a team where Galen was the best player, I just don’t think it would be that great

it doesnt bother me what saunders becomes... but you have little knowledge of the impact galen left on houston

saunders would be lucky lo leave a similar legacy at Cincy ...

saunders is a 165lb 6'0 guard who cant shoot...who is sub 230 in recruit rankings...scuffing at a level a similar level impact to galen is odd

I'm giving Galen credit! He was a good player for sure. Stellar defensive player that could push the ball on offense but had severe limitations on that end as you know. Saunders has some of those same limitations (namely perimeter shooting - hopefully it improves!) but has a better physical profile than Robinson. UC hasn't had many freshman make immediate impacts but the ones that do tend to have great careers: Jarron, Clark, Evans, Caupain, etc...

I also don't like point guards that can't score. Maybe why I don't value guys like Jenifer and Robinson as highly as others - although they were both effective in different ways.

As far as Keith Williams, I'll disagree he was the best perimeter defender. He absolutely SHOULD be with his size, length, and athleticism but he had some lapses last season. I think you underrate his offensive game and overrate what he does defensively. Keith will have a big year regardless and be in the POY conversation.

You are moving the goal posts. I'm talking Saunders becoming a better PLAYER with more talent than Galen.

I get it that Galen was the stabilizing presence that was there as Sampson got the ball rolling, but that's irrelevant to this conversation. UC is on solid footing and doesn't need someone like Galen (although he's a very valuable role player as JHubs mentioned) - they just need better players to take the next step.

You can mention Saunders recruiting ranking but you very well know we wouldn't be having this conversation if it wasn't for the rave reviews. I almost see his ranking as irrelevant in that respect then.

I'll bet on a point guard with Saunders' profile:
-elite speed
-above the rim finishing ability
-long arms
-improving shooting

He played one of the top schedules in the country at Wasatch and his shooting vastly improved across the board on higher volume. Hopefully his improvement continues....

ps im not moving the goal post, the way you interpreted my response just made it seem that way..which is fine.. but i meant you dont level a legacy like that at houston if you arent a great player.i was refuting that becoming as good as galen is something to scoff at

most of our guards were undersized so were already fighting an uphill battle, but from the last 3 seasons the only UH player still signed with an NBA team is galen (tho he hasnt been called up yet)..he just got a multi year deal with the spurs and their g-league team...though its the g-league, he starts on a top 6 g-league team (there are 30 teams)..and leads the g-league spurs in assists, the spurs are the #1 assist team n the g-league..again its the g-league but you dont get even that without alot of talent

this has absolutely nothing to do with our convo, but this just made think of SJ and the noah farrakhan debate we had..he think farrahkhan is pure trash and a waste of scholly (even for a school like ecu) mostly based around lack of great shooting for his size..and what you are selling about Saunders is what Farrakhan selling points are (extremely fast, elite athlete, not great shot. only ever played elite national schedules, starter on a national title team) but those arent credible things to stand on according to him (dont agree)..this has nothing to do with anything..i just found that similarity funny

Not trying to nitpick or anything but I would say the AAC is probably tied for 6th with the Pac. They may have some bigger name brands in hoops (mainly arizona and ucla) but I feel the AAC is just as strong in the top and middle of the conference most years. The metrics usually list the Pac as a better conference but only because the bottom of this league has been a dumpster fire most years. However ECU, USF and Tulane all seem to be trending in the right direction so I don't even think that will be an issue most years from here on out.

Forgot to post this, but UCF and Memphis both make 4 star SG Deebo Coleman’s top 11. He’s from Florida but Memphis is apparently the favorite.

I didn't say waste of scholarship for us, we still got Edra Luster on the team, that's a waste of a scholarship. I said he was overrated which he was, he dropped another 90+ spots in the rankings after he signed even.

Let's look at the facts. He averaged 7.2ppg, 2.4apg on lame percentages and made 13 three pointers in 26 games meaning he doesn't even take them so how does he help our 347th ranked 3 point shooting team this year was my point. That's the actual tangible evidence he produced. He did this on the 5th best team in New Jersey. They weren't even anything special of a high school team in reality and for perspective our walk on averaged 9ppg 5.5apg on the 6th best team in NJ in the same conference.

He was listed at 6-0, 165 on our official site until he magically grew 2 inches last week as a damn near 20 year old, (he's about the same age as Gardner). That's what we've learned since that makes it even worse, not only did he suck it up his senior year in high school, he was 19 years old as a high school senior. The guy couldn't even average but 7ppg and 2apg as a freaking 19 year old vs mostly 16 and 17 year olds. Crown him though because he had some high ratings two years ago. That's how you role on an opinion(that was dropping like a rock) vs actual tangible production which was lame by any standard.

The guy averaged 7ppg on a 5th best team in NJ as a 19 year old (less production than our walk on on the 6th best team in NJ in the same conference) but he's going to magically come in and star for us right? I mean you said the 5th best team in NJ with mostly 16 and 17 year olds was on was better than our ECU 200th ranked college team LOL in about the most insane thing ever said on this board. I can't wait for him to average more points and get more accolades than Jayden Gardner or Newton since he was on a better team as the 5th best team in NJ LOL that had to go to OT to beat the 2A high school team 15 miles away from us. We'll see.

I haven't said anything negative about the recruit we just signed or really any of them in this class. They are all pretty solid in a vacuum, I just know the clock is ticking on Gardner and we have specific needs (347th ranked 3 point shooting) and an urgent timeline. A bunch of 2021 freshman probably aren't really addressing the problems like we need to to capitalize on Gardner's last dance.

We've have had these issues since spring when we got nothing really in the way of help unless you too believe a guy from the 5th ranked high school team in NJ that averaged 7ppg and 2apg and made 13 three's in 26 games as a 19 year old HS senior is going to ride and save the program like some. Count me as skeptical of that.
