High school players are generally what contribute to recruiting rankings, yes. And considering the roster has about 30 open spots, I'll take some depth or at least an attempt to build some.

yes at one point in time rice was projected to have the best basketball recruiting class in the conference based on 247 projections ..i said that in praise of rice and made no mention of memphis, memphis fans have taken it personal for some wierd reason. even though in that conversation i noted when you add transfers i bet atleasst 4 other aac surpass rice in quality of new additions including memphis and uab

the conversation with memphis was about making the best roster for next year, not which has the best recruiting class...

I didn't take it personally. I just thought it was funny, b/c I knew most of those freshmen we were recruiting. Sometimes, the media doesn't know everything.

I surmise Penny will attempt to fortify the roster with quality transfers. If necessary, he will make room. Penny is cold blooded about cutting players - even those already committed (e.g., Knox and Batchelor).

I'll say this. Schwartz is playing the long game, but he recruits well and kids love playing for him. I don't expect anything out of this year, but in year 2 or 3, I can see some leaps. All about retention, he believes he can, will he is the question.

Actually it's a zero way street. Players aren't loyal, and coaches aren't loyal. Not in the world of championship narcissism.

Akot is a perfect example. He was one of three for sure starters for Memphis this year, and bolted to play for Western Kentucky?

No money was involved in that transaction I'm sure.

Shockers signed Makhi Myles a 6'6" guard out of Starkville, MS this week. Another athletic wing. Averaged 22 pts., 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks last year.

Munz made a correction from what 247 Memphis listed. Forrest hasn't signed, either, but he would not be a loss.

As for schollies, we could have as few as 4 returnees. The only one for sure is Jayden. The Lawsons will likely return, + Dandridge.

Williams, Lomax, McCadden and Davis are gone, as is Franklin, if he gets a waiver this year, and maybe even if he doesn't. If Young plays this season (should be available next semester), he's gone.

So 4 gone for sure, and maybe 6. Kennedy, Kao and Granja have one more year, although I would be shocked if Granja returns.

So we could have as few as 4 return, and only 4 recruits for sure.

The rest are up in the air. Penny has no qualms about running off players if he doesn't like them, or if he needs room.

For those decrying Penny's top five signing class....
