Do it the Rice way, run the program into the ground. Why do we even have MBB?

I don’t think Pera should be fired mid season. I think that should be reserved for gross wrongdoing.
Pera seems like a good, likable guy who wants the best for his players, is coaching for the right reasons, etc.
Simply put however, you can’t return a good nucleus and then proceed to go 1-8 to start conference play after a decent non conference showing.

RE: MBB v. UTSA
Exciting game. We played great after a sluggish start (which I would say was the fault of a poor starting lineup choice). Again a few missed FT's and offensive rebounds proved to be the difference. Parrish needs to start, and at this point, I'd say I'd look hard at replacing Moore and Mullins in the starting lineup.
I think we had 18 3 pointers, which may have tied a team record? Yet, we lost. Frustrating.

And we're 1.5 games behind 2-6 USM, which is currently 14th in the conference ... with the last spot in the C-USA's post-season tournament.
Only 12 make it to the tournament.
But, with Rice likely in the bottom pod, they'll have at least 1 more game against Southern Miss, and 2 more against Middle Tennessee.

Ooops. Thanks. I didn't count the teams. I thought USM was 14th out of 16 and I knew the bottom two would not make the tourney. But, as you imply, USM is 12th out of 14. And in all cases, we're currently last. Grrr.

RE: MBB v. UTSA
To avoid another 20-loss season, Rice must go no worse than 4-5 in its final 9 regular season conference games. (I'm guessing that 3-6 would probably get them into the top 12).

On the Massey Composite, Rice is now #248. Last season, the team finished at #247.
Does the Athletic Department consider this to be "progress"?

RE: MBB v. UTSA
After Saturday's game vs UNT, we'll have played 10 conference games with 3 of them against the top 2 teams in the conference and another 3 against teams .500 or better in conference play. Our final 8 conference games will be against just 1 team who currently has a winning record in the conference (Charlotte at home), and in fact that may be our only game against a team with a winning conference record when we play them.
This team has some wins in it if people don't give up on them. Coming out to support them in person would help matters too, but I've been saying that to deaf ears for years. I'm not sure we're better this year than we were last year (our two freshmen big guys are clearly a step down from QMB and Jack Williams which probably is an unfair knock on them, but perhaps more important than that is the fact that Mullins has taken a step back and Murphy and Martin have been inconsistent). At the same time though, Parrish is way better and Moore has looked good at times.
I think we just need to go small the rest of the year and step up the defensive intensity (like we did against UTEP when we shut down their leading scorer who was an inside player). There's no reason we can't have a winning record or at worst, a .500 record over the final eight conference games. While that won't be progress as far as the conference record goes, we still have a decent shot to improve our overall win total from last year.
The Texas Tech transfer is our center of the future. Mylyjael Poteat is also going to help inside next year quite a bit. We still need a point guard (or shooting guard), but if the other key players all return (Peterson, Murphy, Parrish, Moore, Mullins and Olivari), there will be plenty of talent on the court. Cameron Sheffield will be a good replacement for Martin.
This year's team has played tight at times, but when they're loose and confident, they've also had stretches where they have looked really good. That's absolutely a reflection on the coaching staff. They need to figure out a way to get that good stretch for 40 minutes instead of just 20 minutes a game (sometimes it's not even that much).

Pretty much my opinion as well. The ineffectiveness of Mullins has been a real problem. It has forced Petersen and Martin to have to play more minutes. Last year Mullins was really good at driving and pulling up to make a basket fron 8-12 feet out. This year’s team is either scoring right at the bucket or from 3. It continues to amaze me how it seems every team we play features players who look to slash to the basket repeatedly.
The season (and a good bit of optimism) faded in the games right after our good showing in the Bahamas. What should have been a 4-0 stretch before starting conference play instead wound up being 2-2 and poor play in all 4 games that has continued through a 1 win conference recod.

Agree 100% with FBO and Tiki-both of which, as myself, has likely been to most home games.

While the recent losses have been frustrating to accept, I have enjoyed some of the athleticism displayed by Parish, Murphy, Moore, Peterson, etc.---actually fun to watch.
One more year for Pera.

I don't see any justification for being in dead last in this conference.
