RE: MBB v. UTSA
The Owls' 16th & 17th 3-point made brings them to 1-point deficit with 1:35 left, 85-85.

(All-time school record is 18 made 3s, against Rider.)

Ako ties it up, 88-all, with his 201st 3 of his Rice career, now Rice's all-time career 3-point shooter (goals made)!

(He passed Dana Hardy, who made 200 3s in 1989-92.)

88 all. Owl ball with 32 sec to play, 26 on shot clock.

Ako sets all-time record for Owl 3s to tie it passing Dana Hardy.

Just such a bad play drawn up. Dribble 20 seconds off the clock and hope one screen springs Ako for an open three. How is that the play you think up?

A masterclass in how to lose a game. A live ball TO is the only, only, thing that can't happen there. If the look isn't there, just hand the ref the ball, take the 5-second violation and make UTSA draw up a play. Disastrous coaching, disastrous execution, disastrous everything.

18 made 3s (51%) and we lose.

Arrrgh. Chaotic end. Owls' shot is blocked. Inbound pass with only 1 sec on the shot clock misses our guy ... UTSA dribbles the length of the court and lays it in (contested) for the winning bucket.

We lose, 88-90. Sigh.

I've never coached, but I would prefer finding a good look at a basket as soon as one is available, even if that gives the other team another opportunity. If it's a good play, resulting in a high percentage shot, I'd take my chances on that. Even with a miss, the opponent still has to score to avoid overtime.

You could feel it coming when they got the ball with so much time left. Needed to just play their offense and take their chances. Running out the clock without scoring practically handed UTSA the win.

By the way, Middle Tennessee won tonight, so Rice is all alone in LAST PLACE in C-USA.

And we're 1.5 games behind 2-6 USM, which is currently 14th in the conference ... with the last spot in the C-USA's post-season tournament.

Not since Tommy Suitts was fired part way through the conference games. Assistants coached the final games and Scott Thompson was hired during the off season.
