Probably on the pay, not likely on the buyout.

That would be a massive raise but I hope you are right. It would put CMN in the top 40 of salaries and ahead of Holgorsen as the highest in G5. It would also send a clear message to everyone including recruits and any expanding P5 conference that Memphis isn’t messing around.

Do we have the funding (donors or otherwise) to cover that kind of commitment and keep his assistants’ salaries competitive?

Southern Cal is a season away from competing nationally.

Florida State is in a world of buyouts and mediocrity.

The cost of living in California is too high. There is more money to be made at Florida State. The California state income tax is a killer .

Not if you're making $5million/year, which is what Norvell would make if hired at USC (next year, that is). And have already made close to $10million.

Up to 13.3% on income over $1,000,000. Ya, that is a pretty big deal. That is an immediate 13% pay cut from Memphis or Florida State without even factoring in the massive cost of living difference...

Looking that way. It certainly appears they are about ready to announce who it is sometime this week if not sometime today...

I've never understood that. The buyout would be chump change to any school that was worthy of hiring Norvell away from us, so why would it being high matter to anyone but the UofM? At least give us a nice "parting gift" when the big school hires you away.

Buyouts, especially those over a couple of million or so, isnt chump change to any school. One of their boosters is going to have to step up and fund that, and its payable in full immediately. And if the school doesnt have to pay that, they can afford about another $1milion per year for the salaries of all involved.

In that range along with Coordinator increases. Ole Miss's proudest and best football moment in the last 40 years was returning to Cotton Bowl.

Prove that path is doable at Memphis and it boxes out the secondary P5 as has been discussed.

Fwiw two Penn State supporters, in separate conversations yesterday and this morning, said that they believe there is something there between Franklin/FSU.

I had written that off but, if true, and with our old buddy Clay Helton hanging on to his, if FSU wants a "name" Franklin is the guy for them to dance with.

It's gonna cost them in the neighborhood of what they didn't pay Fisher.
