We can analyze every aspect of Wilder's performance, but there was only one issue that has caused the most damage to this program .... not choosing the right QB from the start. Last year, win one of the first 3 games with the correct QB choice (Larussa) then go into the Rice game with something to play for and win that game, boom! we're 6-6.
"I think David Washington is the most explosive quarterback in Conference USA," coach Bobby Wilder said. He said this in 2016, the year after he crowned Shuler Bentley the 4 year starter. So he knew who the best QB was 2015 but started Shuler anyway.
And if you don't believe that our coaches pitched that 4 year **** to Shuler,
“One of the big reasons I came here was I knew, through recruiting, that I had the opportunity to redshirt and then be the starter for four years, and that’s one of the things I worked for my whole redshirt year,” Bentley said.
How about Steven Williams?
After benching Larussa and Hoy with 2 wins in their pockets, here are the acollades for Stevey after a 2 quarter audition when the game was already decided and UNC was just going through the motions,
“We haven’t developed an identity on offense,” said Wilder following the loss. “We didn’t really have an identity against Albany, or UMass. We were defense, special teams (oriented), and Stevey Williams gave us an identity on offense.”
“Our best days are ahead with Stevey Williams at quarterback,” said Wilder.
lol
All across the nation, colleges and universities are naming their starting QB's and yes, VT just named theirs.
I hope Wilder makes the right choice before the VT game.
Lol totally! I don't think Stevey Williams will start. They have been trying to utilize him in other positions I do believe it was wide receiver. I feel like Messiah is going to get the starting position.

You may be right, but according to Brian Scott our 2-Deep at qb is Smartt, deWeaver. There was no indication given of how much space there is between the two.
Who becomes QB can be anybody's guess. Wilder is the genius who picked Bentley over Washington and Stevie over Larussa so pump your brakes, we shouldn't be surprised to see if Spencer/Wolffe steps on the filed slinging the ball.
As crazy as that sounds you might be onto something!

Everything I have heard gives the starting position to Smartt and that deWeaver is way behind on learning the offense. I think Williams will do whatever he asked to do, be it QB or WR.

This is the right answer from people inside. Smartt is the starter. SW is the 2nd best QB but will probably play some WR. DeWeaver is way behind at this point.

I saw the interview after the final scrimmage. BW is basically saying the same thing as always. The team just isn't ready.
If we blow NSU out the water, we might make a blow game, otherwise if we struggle to score on an FCS team it's gonna be a long season! We will see...

Well...
Athlon Sports has us at 3-9
College Football News at 4-8
SBnation at 3-9
And based on the ESPN power rankings, we will go 1-11

How many passes are we going to give him? Seems like every season... “yeah well we did (kinda) better than expected. We won a* game we shouldn’t have won.”
No reason ODU should be getting out recruited in the 757.

Welcome to the board. According to some who often post some insider info on here, he will still be around despite a losing season so that is at least one more pass. There are few of us here who think he should be gone if he doesn't turn the ship around this season which seems likely but no one knows what the AD is thinking so join the banter and oh stock upon booze.

He needs to be gone if he has a 4 win season or worse. I think he will be gone.

No. But we should be out recruiting JMU. A former P5 starting QB just went to Hampton. We lose players from the 757 to teams in our own conference.

Is it unrealistic to think we should rarely lose a 757 player we want to another CUSA or SunBelt school or FCS? We should infrequently lose them to other G5s. I can understand losing a player to a P5, but we should occasionally win a battle there too.

I assure you that you do not want Deondre Francois to be our QB.

Consistently, no. Occasionally, yes. I do think we should out recruit G5's 90% of the time in The 757 for kids we are interested in, especially in CUSA.

Yep. I would hope that would be the case 70%+ of the time in the state of VA too.

Which players have we wanted that went to JMU?
The last thing we needed or wanted was the problem child from FSU.
Obviously wont hit on every recruit but we arent losing many guys to FCS schools that we are after and have spots for.

No, because I don't know which kids schools were legitimately interested in. My guess would be schools with no other G5s in them. So perhaps Marshall, Southern Miss, Navy? Maybe Im off on the percentage guess. The point being, we should own our backyard, and our state (outside of VT and UVA). Don't you think VT thinks they should land 70% of the kids they make a hard push for in state? And they have to compete with UVA. We only have Liberty.

And that is where the coachers have to earn their money recruiting. Sell the program. Sell the University. Sell the benefits of playing in The 757 in front of your family and friends rather than in some dog patch CUSA, MAC, or Sun Belt spot.
